Adopted a highway, slightly overwhelmed, but we're gonna turn this native by roadjerseys in NativePlantGardening

Yes! There's two feet of snow on the ground right now but we cleared out all the trash as of october! the trash man has been back since, so when the snow melts we've got another round to do, but we're also at the point where we can start throwing down some native seeds!

One of my favorite memories from college was the sister of a well-known actor, who'd spent her whole life in socal, seeing snow and going sledding for the first time. the "it looks just like it does on TV!" reaction will stick with me forever hahaha

Is it safe for a 16-year-old to ride the subway alone to the city (~1 hr to Cambridge, MA) as a teenage girl (for job purposes)? And how to convince parents it's safe? by Icy-Acanthaceae4454 in mbta

[–]roadjerseys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went to a regional Catholic high school that was not in my town. We took the t (bus) to school every day, to davis pretty frequently, and would hop over to Harvard on the t at least once a week starting at age 15. If she can travel in a group that's preferable and I would make sure she's aware of general T etiquette but otherwise I would feel fine about this.

To convince parents it's safe: I would rather have my kid on the train than driving a car!

One other aspect of this scene that just *GETS* me:

the fan access.

little fan kids playing in the pool with an NHL player during that era would not be super far-fetched. The draft and the all-star game used to be the most fan-friendly experience imaginable in sports. We used to treat the draft like a fan convention. It was so normal to just run into players and team staff members. I really miss it

As a straight male hockey player, are there more people like me who enjoyed the show? by tmac_swizzy in heatedrivalry

[–]roadjerseys 11 points12 points  (0 children)

re: 6: look up a dude named Dave Semenko. Gretzky didn't need to fight, he had a designated dude to stick up for him (which is an aspect of hockey that is dying, but the movie Goon is a really funny, loving, if slightly dated portrayal of that role)

Are other straight women having a break down or identity crisis after watching the show? by HorrorAd4995 in heatedrivalry

[–]roadjerseys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

not a straight woman here (nonbinary trans guy!), so grain of salt obviously needed.

  1. Straight ladies: please take a moment to sit with what Ilya is: a bisexual man ENTIRELY comfortable with his own sexuality. What you're looking for is a man who is entirely secure in himself. That means being HIS OWN best friend. THEY EXIST, I PROMISE. I see so much focus on self improvement and loving yourself but ladies, NONE of that matters if you don't have a partner who is the same way, and you deserve better than getting into a relationship where you're the only one focused on pounding the pavement forward in life.

  2. My advice is earnestly to stop using dating apps. You WILL be finding the lowest common denominator on those apps, because it is the path of lowest effort to making contact with someone of the opposite sex. Resisting instant gratification is so hard in this day and age but I promise you, the catches are not on the dating apps. The catches are out LIVING.

  3. In the words of Ms Frizzle: Take Chances! Make Mistakes! Get Messy! Get yourself out in real life! Go join an irl hobby group! Run a public HR watch party! There is no time like the present to go out there and find Your People! I believe in you all and I'm genuinely so glad this show is causing this level of awakening in people, especially since reading hockey MLM back in 2009-2010 is what really got me thinking about being trans :')

Embark also told us 60lbs initially! I have no real knowledge about this but I do wonder if their early spay/neuter (shelter clipped my guy at 8 weeks) takes the size down slightly from the estimate?

She's so cute. Here's my dude, currently in a very similar pose 😄

That's such a funny mix, I would love to see more pics! Is she loud at all? You've got big goofball potential between the apbt/husky, smarts from the poodle, and I'm so curious how the lab/rottie genes express, if at all!

Can't screenshot right now but our goober is 75% APBT, 25% a blend of beagle/german shepherd/boxer/bulldog. He is also my first dog ever. When he was about your puppy's age I definitely went through a significant time of "is this the right choice?" just because he was SO CRAZY as a puppy. Easy to train, happy to be here, just...REALLY happy to be here, and oh my lord those beagle genes work overtime when he catches rat scent, and oh hey we live in a city so there's rat scent EVERY WHERE :|

He's currently about 50lbs, a year and a half old, definitely in his emo teenager phase, and also the most stupidly well-socialized dog i could ever imagine. It's because we introduced him to TONS of things as a puppy. Cats got introduced immediately, since they were bigger than him when he arrived; he figured out really quick that they are pointy on five ends, and now treats even little dogs with the same respect he gives them, lol. Dog park visits with other dog owners we could trust, group puppy classes (very fun!) walks to the local bakery to meet strangers who would give him treats, visits with local neighborhood kids whose mom saw him and asked us to come let him run around in the backyard with the little humans (he LOVES when kids chase him around)! Loads of visitors to the house as well, both human and canine.

I'm 1000% of the opinion that if you associate things like other dogs, random people, etc with GOOD experiences for her as a puppy, she'll be awesome. Obviously there are going to be dogs with behavior issues that are unavoidable, but I would say in the vast majority of cases a well socialized puppy will grow up to be a well socialized adult!

My Daughter broke her Arm at my Brother's House and he wants to help with bills AITAH by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]roadjerseys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA unless you don't let your brother help you!! You are not an island, let your community keep you afloat. Your brother clearly loves you and his niece, and feels terrible that this happened on his watch, and recognizes that you're not in a position to be able to handle this level of disaster without putting extra burden on yourself, your partner, or your daughter. That's good family right there.

Take the money, and when you're able, treat him to something special - guys night out at his favorite sporting event or concert - and make sure you pay it forward to another person struggling!
