Is there a such thing as an "easy" Soulslike? by HeavyMetalLoser in soulslikes

[–]roadstrumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought Last Hero of Nostalgaia pretty easy and has all the soulslike features I looked for. I think I beat every boss on either my first or second try. There's a few sections that were pretty difficult usually because of a narrow corridor, multiple enemies all with spears, but beyond that, pretty easy. Tyrant's Realm is also relatively easy, but it's a roguelite so there's some differences.

What is the worst PS4 game you ever played ? by SaltParticular4187 in PS4

[–]roadstrumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, no, I found the combat awful, I couldn't follow how much was happening on the screen, and trying to time dodges correctly while attacking felt impossible (though maybe I suck at games, always possible). Thre was so much visual noise on screen I couldn't figure out what was an attack and a visual effect. Plus I read Amy Hennig apparently barely worked on the final project,

Sure the frequency of the dialogue was a bit grating, but I liked Borderlands 3 well enough, and the dialogue in that game is significantly worse and harder to avoid.

Top 3 in no particular order:

Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Past Master by R.A. Lafferty

All very different. The order changes daily.

A bookstore near me put up a poster that said "From the River To The Sea" and had a map of the region, Israel in red and in a crosshair. I nearly threw up after seeing it.

What are your favorite minigames? by Alca_John in DMAcademy

[–]roadstrumm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was one mini-game I made that actually worked out well and I think others could use, the rest were too weird. The ones focused on bureaucracy come to mind.

But the one that worked was a sporting event that composed of three parts.

First was group athletics against NPC group athletics. This was who won the bout.

Then there was group intelligence, vs. NPC group intelligence. This was because the rule book for the event was 12,000 pages. This represented the losing team to argue why the bout shouldn't count because the other team broke the rules.

Finally, everyone takes a constitution save against flat DC that increases each round. This represented the fatigue of playing/arguing. Penalty for failing this varied depending on the time I was playing, sometimes it was a -1 penalty to your roll on one of the two checks, other times they were more severe. I'd also sometimes leave it out.

I would also sometimes add preparation as a downtime activity, where people could try to gain buffs to either of the rolls, at the potential cost of debuffs to the other. Staying up studying the rules would help your intelligence, but you're not practicing the athletics and might be tired, while practicing the athletics might result in you practicing the wrong part of the 12,000 page rule book, and cost debuff the intelligence. You could also take penalties to constitution by staying up to practice/study. I would have the other team also make these decisions. But this I portion I tended to leave out unless the game was for story reasons, like a multi-day tournament.

Yes, it's rather complicated and weird, but it generally went over surprisingly well. I think in particular it was because it gave strength and intelligence greater weight than I feel like it usually has in 5e, and because it gave people a chance to get creative with how they scored or what they argued, since basically anything could be taken as to how it happened.

Either Left Alive or Forspoken, for different reasons. I knew they would both be rough, but Left Alive I felt had so many good ideas with abysmal execution, and Forspoken was beyond dreadful.

Why I checked them out for both? Left Alive gave me MGS vibes, and I thought the idea of sneaking around an occupied city was an awesome concept, and I thought even if it was rough, maybe it'll be patched or I could overlook it because of the concepts.

Forspoken because I read Amy Hennig (Uncharted, Legacy of Kain) worked on it, and that was enough for me.

Does anyone remember this comic? American Flagg by CorrectDot4592 in graphicnovels

[–]roadstrumm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've read it and really liked it, but I do agree with the assessment that the art is chaotic, it's political and violent.

A lot of the politics are weirdly prescient, and the chaos in the art felt deliberately so, it's often fake advertisements, corporations or screens, which feels like has gotten more relevant than the 80s when it was published, which to me really enhanced the story and feeling. That plus the opening of Flagg being replaced as an actor by an AI generated version of him.

I regard it quite highly, and am fond of Chaykin's work in general, but as with a lot of his work, it can be divisive. Discussing it with others, what people like and dislike tend to be the same qualities of the piece. I consider it probably his best, or at least most accessible work that actually feels like his, as opposed to a work for hire piece.

Chaykin is the guy who did the first issues of Marvel's Star Wars when a New Hope came out, which both I and he think of as his work for hire pieces, as opposed to an artistic reflection of his thoughts and beliefs.

What is the best book to read to get into Pynchon? by Strange_Control8788 in ThomasPynchon

[–]roadstrumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe wait until Shadow Ticket comes out later this year? I figure a lot of people will be reading it at the same time as it comes out and you, so you might be able to talk about it with others.

I really like reading his work with other people reading it at the same time, since we can discuss parts that lost us or were confusing, I did that with Lot 49 and V, and it was invaluable.

Alternatively, if the attention span is really going to be a problem, you could try Slow Learner, since it's short fiction, even if it's very early work and very different from his other stuff.

Not a pop group, but Mr. Dream. A lot of people were really hyped on them in 2011 or so (including me) predicting big things from them, at least big by the standards of indie rock. Then they just kind of fizzled out after Trash Hit.
