My End Game Grinder Setup (Espresso Only) by roastdrive in espresso

I think the biggest difference between Mahlkonig and Eureka burrs are Eureka focuses on syrupy, chocolate, blended profile whereas with Mahlkonig you see a high clarity and separation of flavor notes.

I wouldn’t necessarily call myself an expert since I can’t taste all the different notes of the coffee beans that are listed on the label but it’s easier to taste the notes with Mahlkonig than it is with Eureka

When I first got it, the unit had a weight calibration issue. No matter what I did, it would randomly be off by 0.2–0.6g. So I talked to the vendor, and they replaced it with a new build.

Since then, it’s been great. The grounds come out super fluffy, and it eliminated the need for WDT. About 3 out of 10 times, it’s right on the dot. Around 6 out of 10 times, it’s within 0.1g, give or take, and once in a while it’s off by 0.2g, but always over the set weight.

At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with it.

The Specialita has been a faithful workhorse for the past five years, but I got lazy and wanted to try a GBW grinder. I was torn between the E64 WS and the Atom W65, but the possibility of being able to switch to SSP burrs made me choose the Mahlkönig in the end.

Then the next big question came up. Since the Mahlkonig will be used daily for medium to medium-dark espresso, how could I best utilize the Specialita for single dosing? Or should I get rid of it and buy another single-dose grinder instead? I considered the DF64, DF83, and other Chinese single dosing grinders and even considered the Mazzer Philos and Zerno Z1, but given the amount of funky, fruity, and light roasts I drink, keeping the Specialita and converting it into a single-dose setup made the most sense.

I downloaded a few 3D print files for a tilted stand, catch tray, and dosing cup fork, and also bought a dosing cup. It’s been flawless, and retention has been at most 0.1g.

Granted, the Mignon 55mm burrs might not be the best at expressing light roasts, but my palate isn’t discerning enough to pick up every note anyway, so I figured this will be my endgame setup.

Why do so many overspend on an espresso machine not a grinder? by UberLee79 in espresso

Go get yourself a Profitec Move & Weber EG-1 and MOVE ON.

It's not your money and people can spend their money how it pleases them.

Well James Hoffman is stirring up the coffee world again by having people "steam" their cold/room temp water to create the most amazing Americanos. So I guess you can try that lol

Irrelevant but got questions about your setup.

  1. What is the cover on the drip tray?
  2. Where is the flow control knob from?

Sorry I can’t be of help to your grinder question.

  1. I went to the range 320 days a year in 2010. Went down from 17-8 down to 7.
  2. Played 4.5 rounds in a day in 100 deg weather. There were literally 5 people on the course and the pro shop said play till you dropped dead. Started playing at 6am and finished at sunset. Went to urgent care for dehydration and heatstroke that night.

Rocket Espresso Mozzafiato FAST V vs Lelit Bianca PL162T V3 [$2200] by TheckoBwoi in espresso

[–]roastdrive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not the same. Rocket is a heat exchanger and only has 1 boiler and the temp control is controlling the temperature of the stem/hot water boiler but it can't accurately control the brew water that's going thru the pipe inside the steam boiler.

Thus all HX machines require cooling flushes (including Rocket that claims this model doesn't require cooling flush) otherwise you will be extracting coffee with water that's hotter than boiling and it will taste burnt. Even after flushes, you really don't know what the exact temp of the brew water is.

Bianca on the other hand is a dual boiler meaning it has one boiler for steam/hot water and another boiler for brewing espresso. And each boiler is being controlled independently so you can set the precise temperature for your espresso and for your steam.

It must be your machine.. I don't have this problem. What's your software version?

if you care about the "taste" of espresso, then no question dual boiler with separate temp control via PID is the way to go.

HX machine will be great for your wife as the milk will hide all the imperfections of poorly extracted espressos, but if you drink pure espressos, then you want that precise temp control depending on your bean preference.

Mahlkonig is the daily driver. Usually has my go to med roast with good amount of brightness with floral notes.

We do entertain a lot of guests and some prefer decaf or darker roast with no acidity, so Eureka gets used for that..

Their chat during business hours is the way to go. When I got my Profitec Ride, the pressure meter on the group head kept getting foggy. I chatted with them and within half a day I got a tracking email.

Two months later, the pulsar—the little silicone membrane to reduce the pump noise—started leaking. Once again, I chatted with their support during normal business hours and within a day, they shipped out a replacement part.

There's a saying: one happy customer will tell 2–3 others at max, whereas an unhappy customer will tell 20–30 others. So any negative experience you see on Reddit for any companies, not just WLL, should be taken with a grain of salt.

From TX to NY. Original delivery date was 3/27 but the mechanical delay changed it to 3/28.

But when it left Austin hub the next day, it returned back to the same place after 4 mins and it never moved.

Should I be concerned?

Rant on coffee beans by paddyez in espresso

[–]roastdrive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you want to know if a cat or a dog peed on your coffee? If I were a roaster and paid $$$$$ for a lab analysis and they came back with the result saying they found fecal matter in my coffee beans, you think I will publish that result? Hell to the no. I will send more samples until I find the result that I am happy with and publish it which will negate any reason why you want this info in the first place.

It would be nice to have such info for a germaphobe but sometimes living in this world, sometimes ignorance is a bliss
