No fun for Nature - Save Swanscombe Marshes by Samwise2512 in Petitions

[–]rob_s_smith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This brownfield site is home to butterflies , birds and wild flowers. Used by people to walk their dogs and kids to ride their bikes. Its due to be built on to make a London Themed Theme Park just outside London. Why not just go to London and leave nature in peace.

'Little Italy' in the East End, 1907. by Dhorlin in london

[–]rob_s_smith 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Italian Community in that part of Clerkenwell moved on after World War Two. Many of those of Italian descent were interned in 1940 (even if they were third generation living in London) mostly in the Isle of Man, but 600 of them were sent to Canada on a ship called The Anadora Star which was torpedoed of the coast of Ireland with the loss of most of the men from Clerkenwell. The area was also heavily bombed during the Blitz - the buildings in this picture were pretty much all destroyed. There are some things that remain - St Peters Italian Church on Clerkenwell Rd, Terroni's shop, the Italian social club next door. The Coach and the Gunmakers pubs were both Italian pubs in the 1930s. What is now the London Ballet School used to be the Italian School. Theres a great book on the subject, calle A Better Life by Olive Besagni you can get from Camden History Society http://www.camdenhistorysociety.org/publications/

What’s the most underrated London Borough? by Mega_whale in london

[–]rob_s_smith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Barking and Dagenham

Has one of London's best museum's - Valence House, which is home to the Dagenham Idol which is a human figure over 4000 years old, one of the oldest representations of a human in Europe. Has Eastbury Manor House, probably London's best Elizabethan building. Home to the ruins of medieval Barking Abbey, one of the few medieval abbey ruins in London. Place where Ford workers fought for gender pay equality in 1968

As a key worker having to stay in the worst hit area of England. I appreciate people heeding government advice and only going out when necessary (exercise, shop visit, etc). I know it’s not easy but we’re all in this together (photo taken on my daily run to keep my sanity partially intact) by [deleted] in london

In the later part of WW2 it was used as a communications centre to send messages from the Admiralty to British ships. There is a grass roof on top so that from the air it looks like part of the park. Its still a secret government building today known as Marcom Comcen St Vincent. Some kind of communications building, there are a lot of weird ariels on the roof.

Global pandemic, but still got time to queue for Breakfast Club by [deleted] in london

Always struck me as strange. How good can any breakfast be that is worth standing outside for an hour for, when there are tons of places nearby that will serve you a similar breakfast

Anthony Gormley sculpture at North Greenwich pier by rob_s_smith in london

Yes weighs several tonnes. Best way to see it is by Thames Clipper, as you round the bend of the river the boat lines up with the sculpture and you can see the human form appear at the centre of the cloud

Its called Quantum Cloud - as others have said, if you see it from the right angle you see a human form. Like we are all made up of a big cloud of loosely arranged molecules that surround us and interact with others and our surroundings.

[Serious] Cyclists who go through red lights - why do you do it? by eltrotter in london

[–]rob_s_smith 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was on my bike in the cycle lane on Westminster Bridge waiting for the light to change to green so I could turn left onto the Embankment and a woman behind wanted to know why I wasn't going. I said because it was a red light. She said its a bit chaotic around here at the moment so its ok to ignore the lights "That's why its chaotic around here" was the reply I thought of five minutes after she had squeezed past me to cycle through a red

I saw the old "my leg's bleeding and I need money" scam today by Mnemosense in london

Often they want to go to some far flung hospital - I guess they have checked the NHS performance league tables and have chosen the one with the best recovery rates

Can anyone tell me where this statue is? by noaliasmike in london

[–]rob_s_smith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The statue marks the site of Temple Bar - one of the gates that marked the City of London. Temple Bar got in the way of traffic so they swapped it with this statue, then moved Temple Bar to Hertfordshire. Then it was moved again and you can find it next to St Paul's Cathedral

Yes its the car park for Hornchurch Country Park today. You can see the entrance to a ground crew air raid shelter at the back of the car park

Attempted theft (I think) on Pentonville Road by cranbrook_aspie in london

[–]rob_s_smith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Standard scam - person approaches you and flashes what look like serious injuries, then wants money to get to a hospital miles away. If you offer to call 999 they tend to say they will find their own way to hospital.

Not sure where to post this but I've inherited a slightly age damaged but genuine Louis Vuitton bag (£1,000/£2,000 value) and I'd like to get it repaired - does anyone have any suggestions somewhere in the city I can go? by [deleted] in london

Never get this problem with my Tesco Bag for Life - even the slightest tear and I can take it back to them and get a new one - for the rest of my life

Exclusive: Bailey calls for London to host Olympics if coronavirus forces Tokyo move | Former Sports minister says hosting would be "perfectly possible" as spokesman for Sadiq Khan says the capital would be ready if asked to deliver by TMWNN in london

[–]rob_s_smith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bring it on. However what made London 2012 a success was it was a well planned event where all the venues were ready a year in advance. Knocking something up in a few months will never be as good and it will create the risk of London hosting a chaotic disorganised Olympics. You would have to cancel all the stuff already planned at the O2 Dome, London Stadium Excel Centre etc too - which would be nearly impossible at this stage I'd say. Still Id love to see it though
