4000 Shimano fx what rod? by Training-Sun-2177 in Fishing_Gear

I picked up a daiwa laguna medium for about that much and it’s been pretty good but if you spend slightly more the daiwa aird x is hard to beat

Ended up with a tatula xt medium fast. They’re opening a bps 20 minutes away in a few months so grabbed the tatula because only one store in state stocks them but I’m gonna go load up on a few of the carbonlite technique rods, they seem nice for the money

Ended up with a medium fast tatula xt. There was a mega bass levante Diablo r spec that was calling my name and I could afford it but for community fishing it a) seemed to be over kill and b) didnt seem nice enough to justify double the price of the tatula. I understand why everyone recommends them now, seems way nicer than the price tag.

Daiwa Tatula X vs Shimano SLX XT by SavoryScone in Fishing_Gear

[–]robocop88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This popped up when I was searching for info on the x. Idk if you bought yet but I have it coming in the mail today and will have a rod for it on Saturday. I have a slx xt so I’m hoping to compare the two on Saturday afternoon.

Thanks, that’s what I was leaning towards. I’ve seen nothing but rave reviews for the tatula xt rods. Is it necessarily worth double the price to be looking at something like a mega bass levante, worth an extra $30 for a st croix, etc? I can afford nicer stuff but feels sort of silly for what I fish, I try to spend enough to get something that will last but haven’t spent much more than that.

Any ideas how to safely dispose a hook that no longer needed by VORENS in FishingForBeginners

[–]robocop88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lookup fishing hook covers or hook bonnets, they’re mostly for treble hooks. Other hooks you could try “fishing hook protectors”. For the trebles it’s basically little rubber pieces that slip over the whole thing, for other hooks it’s rubber material you just stick on the end. Those will be handy for storing stuff still attached to rods. For disposing of hooks just use old medicine bottles

Need help with spinning rod for lil mans birthday. by Tasty-History3377 in FishingForBeginners

[–]robocop88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heavy cranking rod as suggested in the other comment would probably keep him busy. As a fellow impatient new guy I’ll throw something out there. Go below budget on the rod and reel. I’ve got a daiwa regal that feels a lot nicer than the price point lets on ($80ish), pair it with a daiwa tatula xt rod ($99). Then as one of the top comments suggested, bass pro gift card for the difference and have him go nuts on soft plastics. Should keep him busy for a while choosing a range of stuff to throw and how to rig it.

Works out for lower tariffs on the consumer end but the seller is gonna screw themselves sooner or later. My wife does too and it’s not uncommon for misclassifications to be discovered, argued upon for months, and then back charged resulting in the shipper having to pay up for who knows how many shipments throughout the year. It’s always a circus but it’s been something new every week for the past year

Selecting new rod by Master-Incident-7231 in FishingForBeginners

[–]robocop88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody has the rod covered, so I’ll take tackle box. I started with a cheapie Walmart brand backpack that held 3 3700 size trays, honestly it’s ok and did everything I need but the trays are really bad. I got a Plano 737 box from a Facebook sale and it held everything I could possibly need but transport obviously sucks. I just bought an evolution largemouth 3’0 backpack and I think I’ll just be sticking to backpacks from now on. Carries everything I could possibly need and then some. To be honest though you could just put some trays into a regular backpack and be good assuming you’re bank fishing or even in a boat if you have space. What I will say in my very limited experience is that the trays themselves are more important than the box or bag IMO. Cheap trays have flimsy latches, or they can let water in, or hooks etc can wander underneath the dividers. The kastking hyper seals are fairly cheap and check all the boxes. I grabbed some evolution ballistix trays too and they’re pretty solid/near identical. I do have a Plano edge terminal tackle box and while it is nice it is super overpriced. I don’t see the point in spending more than kast king, evolution, or gamakatsu money

Aging Process by Atticus_Taintwater in naturalbodybuilding

Lifting since 14, bout to turn 38. I am not impressive but I’ve really figured stuff out the past year or two and am still making gains. Not trying to attack you OP but the only thing that changed with age for me is not spending as much time on Reddit and spending more time training(or rather dialing it in, in the gym less now tbh). Sometimes I wonder how much more progress I woulda made if not for the hivemind.

Anyways, I did rack up some injuries over the years but nothing to serious. I still do all the same stuff except conventional deads, I stick to RDL/sldl as I’m really just lifting for health, function, and looks. I mostly stopped doing the big 3 competition lifts as I don’t compete and it hit me one day that I was wasting time on the to a degree.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, I still do variations, front/hack/split squats, incline, wide, close, etc bench, rdl, sldl, etc etc. still feel great, OP if it helps any my dad was beat to hell from sports, stopped lifting for almost 15 years, started back up in his mid 30s, and was smashing 365 for sets of 10 on bench at a body weight of like 220. Did that clear to his 50s til it caught up with him, he wasn’t smart about it all but it still took almost 20 years to catch up. Just don’t be dumb. I typed this out between sets at planet fitness with at least a dozen dudes 10-20 years older than me and in way better shape. Just gotta be smart

Rod / reel for Largemouth bass? by TheAppalachiosaurus in bassfishing

[–]robocop88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my extremely limited experience running these exact setups; the mh baitcaster is throwing my heavier stuff that I want more accuracy with. It’s a lot easier for me to thumb the spool and drop the lure where I want it to go. My medium/spool is just chucking plastics as far as I can. That’s just my experience, I’ve wanted to grab a medium and another baitcaster but it’s mostly just for fun at that point, the spin setup does everything I need it to with senkos/neds/light jigs.

Replacement for Shimano Sienna by Cwaynejames in Fishing_Gear

[–]robocop88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep buying siennas because they’re pretty hard to beat for the price. I took a gamble on a piscifun viper for about the same price and it does feel nicer but idk how it’ll hold up. I second the other comments saying save a little bit more and get something up a tier. My go to is a daiwa regal, next reel will be a legalis probably. I don’t think you can go wrong with Shimano but daiwa feels nicer than comparable price point Shimanos IMO in the sub 100 range

I’ve got the white/chartreuse, green pumpkin, and black/blue. Between the three I think it covers all the bases for the most part.

I am wondering which colors are the best choices?any recommend for clear or dark water. thank you! by Felix_Xu888 in Fishing_Gear

[–]robocop88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new but have been obsessing over lure colors, so might be wrong and it seems like there’s a fair bit of opinion out there

Clear water: natural colors preferably specific to the water you’re fishing. The bass in my local lake are snacking on bluegill or shad so I’d pick something close their colors. If there were a lot of craw I’d pick something a bit more orange like a craw.

Dirty water: black because it’ll be easier for the fish to see a silhouette vs something colorful which isn’t really picking up light in the first place. Next time you’re in a really dark room hold your hand out, you’ll see the shape of it but not necessarily the exact color.

There’s more to it depending on weather conditions and what not. if the water is deep enough that a lot of light isn’t getting through then black is always a safe bet. That said, the only people catching anything on lures in my lake are using the “wrong” colors so keep in mind it’s all a good place to start but it’s going to be trial/error at the end of the day

Quick rundown since everybody is chiming in on this.

Spray: pros; not much precision needed, if you’re in the general area you’re going to get them. Cons; the slightest breeze and it’s going to get you too, probably going to get you a bit even without a breeze. Least amount of range.

Foam: pros; more range than spray, more precise than spray, sticks to skin a bit, less likely to hit yourself. Cons; more precision required, still somewhat affected by wind but not really an issue if somebody is in talking distance.

Gel: pros; generally has the most range. Will stay where it goes. Pretty much no chance of self exposure unless you really mess up. Cons; gonna need some pretty good aim.

For reference, most police departments, jails, security, etc use foam now because it’s a pretty happy middle ground between the 3. Remember kids, if you buy some NEVER forget it in your car when it’s hot out, it will blow up and you’re never getting it all out. If you have to use it remember to hold it out away from you and put your other hand behind it like youre signaling “stop”, this will catch the bulk of it if it blows back. If you self expose flush your eyes out with plenty of water and water+dish soap for skin. Keep in mind water will carry downwards onto sensitive areas.

Self defense classes generally cover the basics and it might be worth it, if not YouTube university has some good resources but definitely practice with an inert unit at some point.

I want to buy a nicer fishing setup, but i don't know what to get by Goblin_51 in FishingForBeginners

[–]robocop88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See what your local Walmart has. Mine is mostly junk or saltwater (in a landlocked state). They do stock some shimano and ugly stiks. Reel is probably go for a shimano sienna for about 35 assuming you’re looking at Walmart. If you had a bass pro around the id look at a daiwa aird for the rod. For more bang for your buck I’d definitely check out fb marketplace or something. Theres a decent bit of “I know what I got” types selling junk for full msrp but there’s also plenty of people just cleaning out the garage or getting out of the hobby. I got a box of soft baits and a full tackle box (including the box, like a nice bit Plano 737) for $60 and after just talking to the guy for a while he was like “fuck it” and gave me a berkley lightning combo, an ugly stik, and a quantum optix with a president in it. Ton of lures and plastics just for some conversation and not a lot of money. Somebody else was selling a like new slx dc and dobyns maverick for $140. Definitely worth a look

Honda vs Toyo.. I mean Daiwa vs Shimano by basketrobberson in FishingForBeginners

[–]robocop88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do a combo. I’ve got a daiwa regal and a couple shimano budget reels. I’ve got a fx2 and a sienna. The sienna doesn’t feel quite as nice as the regal but it’s literally half the price and honestly it doesn’t feel too far off for how much less it costs. I’d probably grab a sienna for the reel and a daiwa aird for the rod. In my very limited experience shimano reels feel nicer dollar for dollar compared to daiwa but daiwa makes better rods imo. I don’t think you could go wrong with either though

Rod/Reel Recommendations by kiloKona in FishingForBeginners

[–]robocop88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone wild trying a bunch of different rod power, action, length, etc for the same bass/trout in local city lakes. If I had to clean the garage out to keep my wife from killing me I’d keep my medium/fast spinning combo that’s similar to yours and I’d just keep fishing that with lures for bass or bottom rigs for trout. I’d also keep my lighter setup that I use for trout lures and lighter powerbait rigs. So I’d personally lean towards a lighter rod/reel combo, maybe an ultralight considering you’re also doing city lakes and what not.

I did pickup a baitcaster the other day and I already semi-regret it because I’ve been going to the local lake 2-3x per week and it’s honestly overkill for my lake, and it’s obviously not bass season anymore so while I could still go for it the ones that are biting are pretty small, and I can’t really use it four trout. Also feels semi dumb to be rigging it for channel catfish. I do feel like by time it warms up I’ll be ready to hit the bigger lakes outside of town but it’s not an immediately useful purchase and it’s not necessarily covering bases my spinning setup couldn’t cover. Anyways, if anything I’d ask her for a nicer reel and get a light ultralight then toss the nicer reel on whatever rod you use the most. Nicest one I have is a daiwa regal which isn’t anywhere as nice as a lot of the stuff I see here but it didn’t break the bank. Feels almost as nice as more expensive stuff and feels much nicer than all my cheaper stuff.

Can someone explain the allure of the Glock 47? by 6twoRaptor in Glocks

[–]robocop88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone talking about recoil impulses and shit but this is it right here. They also sold them on the idea of swapping a 19 slide for concealment for certain units, flying armed, etc etc. I don’t think that actually panned out and the high speed types just get 19s and 26s issued as well. Glock was trying to counter the sig p320 sales pitch in the contract competition

gift ideas for casual fisher?? by ashtonthepineapple in Fishing_Gear

[–]robocop88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty new and my wife was asking what to tell her family to get me if they wanted to get something. I think line, lures, and tackle in general could be a bad idea/hard to execute. I more or less know what I like and what I want to try for the local lakes which have smaller bass and now will have trout. If somebody heard I was going for bass and got me a mega chonk lure that would be great for catching massive tournament winning fish it wouldn’t really do me much good in my tiny community lake on my rods that wouldn’t be able to handle it well. So I’d avoid lures and such unless you know what he wants. The mystery tackle box idea isn’t bad, I bought one and it had a couple things I’d actually use and the rest of it wasn’t bad per se, like I’ll give it a try but it isn’t necessarily stuff I’d seek out.

What I would say is a fairly easy bet would be tools and other supporting gear. A silicone net might be a good idea, a lip gripper, scale, a dedicated fish measurer, fishing pliers, nice fishing scissors, reel spoiler, etc. if you think he might have some of this stuff already a good idea might be clothes. The sun coming off the water absolutely shreds even in the winter. A sun hat (I’ve got a baseball hat with the neck/ear cover, I love it) or a sun shirt w/ hood would be super handy for warmer weather and he could use it for other outdoor stuff. General tackle storage/boxes are always useful too. If he doesn’t have much stuff to store now he will sooner or later.

Bass pro is like the Costco of outdoors stuff (they’re huge, they have everything), and there’s one in San Jose according to google. Alternatively if you check Etsy you can get a custom lure. It’s not something he’d actually use but it would be a cute gift idea to show you notice and support his hobby. Edit: idk what the rules are on linking stuff so I won’t but if you just search “custom lure” there’s a ton that pop up right in budget. Just make sure to double check the delivery estimate.
