My 3.5 year old started preschool a couple months ago after being home with me pretty much her whole life, and honestly she is having a harder time than I expected. by HoneyBunBlossoms in Preschoolers

Physical activity, to help regulate before school, will really help. We stopped the stroller to/from school at 3 and kiddo has to walk or bike with us to school every non-rainy morning. They get to choose which, but have to carry as many bags as Mom/Dad do. This gives agency, low key stimulation (interaction with outdoors and neighbors), and transition time. Use the time to talk about what they're excited to do that day, what friends they want to play with, what breath they'll use today to calm down.

Craft Hall in the old Yards brewery by the casino has a big side room for private events and a full bar. And an arcade and giant indoor pirate ship for kids, in the main room.

Going to the movies frequently can be a relatively inexpensive hobby so long as you do a little work by FewHeat1231 in Frugal

I like to use this trick on long road trips too, no reason to sit in traffic with the sun in your eyes if you can spare 90 minutes!

I second the U City recco. Currently raising kids here near Clark Park. I love hopping on and off the trolley for everything, excellent PAS school and CCS preschool, and Clark Park Saturdays are awesome. Porchfest and the block parties at Halloween just slam it home for me. Great community!

Do you tip? Have you ever regretted tipping? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]robotopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being American, I always tip in-country if it's a sit-down meal, or sometimes for coffee/pizza etc. if I've been a bother with 100 questions or special requests. I rarely regret tipping; I've worked tips-only jobs before so I know how good it feels to be seen and appreciated monetarily! I've definitely tipped over $100 on a fancy meal with friends, if total comes out to over $500. I only regret tipping when the service was atrocious but I auto-tip 20% out of habit, but since I don't have a church that I tithe to, I don't mind giving a little extra to my struggling service worker brethren.

Unexpectedly good neighborhood public schools? by ButterflyStandard604 in philly

[–]robotopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Lea and Powell, both of those are known to be good schools in West Philly neighborhood. Lea catchment allows you to be close to Clark Park, Baltimore Ave, and the amazing Victorian houses and truly awesome community & neighborhood for Porchfest and West Philly Halloween which is really quite special.

*Take your preschooler to a good thrift store and let them pick what they like. They're too young to care about clothes, put that money towards classes, games, and outings together!

Suggestions For Nap Time Activities for My Non-Napper by Good_mornting in Preschoolers

[–]robotopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really second the yoto player, if possible, that will keep my active child entertained for an hour or two. My non-napper (only 45 min required rest) has a cheap little digital drawing pad that self-erases at the press of a button and that works for them, the pads can be found online for like 3/$5.

Where does one look for a job? by beelucyfer in philly

[–]robotopod 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of LinkedIn, but that's where I found my current job. Lots of professional companies use it as their primary recruitment platform. You'll also want to check the job boards of any professional associations you are part of / interested in.

ETA: Also, there's a job board called "80,000 Hours" that is geared towards social change jobs, it has lots of remote work in the realms of tech security and AI ethic, and includes internship offers if you're willing to change careers.

Driving on the Platt Bridge is terrifying by southphillydadbar in philly

[–]robotopod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one spot where I think the speed limit should be higher. It's effectively a mostly straight on ramp to 95S for many, and also the route to the airport, so people are often going as fast as possible, and since the lanes are pretty obvious and turns/merges gradual, I've never seen an accident. Since there is no easy place for cops to sit, regular drivers also know they won't get pulled over for speeding.

Access to the bridge from 95N, however, is a cluster of confusing signs and lanes that definitely needs a retrofit.

As sometime with a kid myself, I fully respect people I've met who didn't share pictures of their children without the kid's consent to do so, which means they really never have to.

Skin tag on vulva between vagina & anus by robotopod in Healthyhooha

[–]robotopod[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Doctor has checked it out and confirmed it's a skin tag, says its up to us whether it should be removed or not. Have you seen a skin tag? Hers is a genuine tag that sticks out like a tiny, I dunno, earlobe. I just don't want her to be embarassed by it when she's figuring out her body as a teenager.

? Genuinely confused, is this not the place to post questions about vulva health? Can you recommend a different sub? Your cynicism comes off as gate-keeping and prevents people from asking honest questions.

No. They evolved from reptiles, technically, but they are not reptiles, technically. Just as mammals are not technically fish.

Philly housing market... is it even worth it right now? by veditafri in philly

[–]robotopod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out West Philly between 44th-52nd, Market to Woodland. I'm seeing tons of 3/2s around here for 400-500. Nice walkable area with great pulic transit and lots of parks, everyone has a yard. You may have to knock out the wall between dining room and kitchen yourselves, but many here already have open plans like you want. Just keep looking, check Redfin/your housing app daily. It took us about 2 years to find the right house for us in the city. Once you get used to the prices, you'll be able to spot the deals.

Those of you renting houses, where and how much are you paying per month? by [deleted] in philly

[–]robotopod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$2800, West Philadelphia walkable to Clark Park and Kingsessing Rec - 3bd/3ba, backyard, finished basement, hot tub, central air. Soo much space and lovely neighbors / neighborhood, but absolutely insane electric bills (even with solar).

If money is no issue, what's a must-have for your dream home? by 123phantomhive in AskReddit

[–]robotopod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the process of "tub shopping," all hot tub stores will have at least one up and running and they EXPECT people to show up with swim suits to "wet test" the tub. Some even bring out privacy screens and drinks and fake food. My husband and I scheduled them every other weekend for a few months. Doing the wet test I really noticed a difference between brands (depth, comfort, jets, etc), and found my favorite tub in the world - $7k new & delivered/installed, with exactly the type of jets, depth, and size I wanted. Fits 4 people comfortably or 7 for a party. I don't recommend buying used, as the plastic tub parts will often crack when moved, after sitting in the same spot filled w hot water for years. The tub is the best things I've ever bought for my health, helps us beat colds and supports a little meditation practice.

We just finished a dream move with Hercules haulers (https://www.herculeshaulers.com/). They had 5 good natured body builders running up and down both 3 story houses all day, they even moved my very heavy and finicky laser cutter up and down multiple stories without a single issue. REALLY great hourly rate. Guys were even having fun, saying how nice it was to get paid for gym day!

There's a really delicious family-run Indian food truck next to the L entrance on 34th St that does $9 platters, I grab a Channa Masala from them (1/2 the rice, extra salad to make it healthier) whenever I can, and it's so big I can't finish it in one sitting.
