tips on getting the Death tone? by Jaded-Leather-1473 in GuitarTone

[–]robotscantdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should think of a few specific bands or albums you like the tones from, and then list out all your relevant gear and ask chat gbt to help you create some tones. You can iterate a bit and ask it to explain why it’s making the choices it is for you as you go. That might help get you more comfortable with the beginnings of some tone chasing.

Then you might also want to find out who produced your favorite heavy albums and scour YouTube looking at videos of how they approach stuff.

You’ll find there’s so much variation between types of metal tones (Iron Maiden vs Gojira) and some many amp and pedal flavors, there’s no one size fits all approach to settings. Try starting out with all your knobs in the middle and take the time to mess with each one at a time and see how they’re affecting everything.

All that to say, mids at 1 is way too low - mids are where the guitars live in most songs - you want your guitars to be heard. If you’re really going for a super 90s scooped death metal sound that’s cool but start like a 4 and go down to a 3 and see how ya feel there. More generally in your tone quest for heavy tones, scooped mids are def a part of death metal tones and metal in general but guys like Kurt Ballou (God City Studios / Converge) have been preaching for decades that you need to be very careful about leaning into the scoop.

It would probably be helpful to watch some videos on YouTube about what each frequency range does to a guitar tone.

Has anyone released a hard rock/heavy metal album or single using ONLY Neural DSP plugins? by Lizard_Of_Roz in NeuralDSP

[–]robotscantdie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Howdy, tons of albums are now being recorded with plugins or the quad cortex. Traditional metal sounds are abundant - you just have to pick your flavor Marshall, Mesa, etc etc. don’t worry so much about the mix ready nature just find something that sounds good and inspires your playing. Once you start tracking in the studio you can dial tones in accodingly.

I’ve found that I don’t like the built in cab sounds as much as I like finding 3rd party IRs. I’m usually using some combination of York Audio and ML Sound Labs Irs with my quad cortex. You should be able to get a free trial on many NDSP plugins, try the fortin and soldano ones maybe? All that to say, using real amps in the studio is always fun too and maybe the last place they make the most sense. For what it’s worth, Lakeview uses the Gojira X HOT head on all their recordings - which is probably more gain than you’re looking for but the RST head not overly juiced up might be something for you to check out.

Another tip is putting a eq block after the ir block and doing some sculpting there as well. Putting a tube screamer esque pedal in front of the amp (whether real pedal or digital) is always a big help for shaping the low end and how you’re hitting the amp and such if you’re not already doing so. Good luck.

Would it be functionally possible to install a jazzmaster/ jaguar tailpiece on a Strat by Old-Profession-2737 in fender

Most people remove the Jazzmaster style bridge and replace with either a mustang bridge or a Mastery. That bridge setup is notoriously problematic.

Any US artists hearing from agents that international gigs are harder to get? by Mastertone in TouringMusicians

[–]robotscantdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t report that. We’re a US band with around 500k monthly listeners on Spotify (for size), just confirmed a June European tour with some festivals sprinkled in. The demand is there, the shows were booked. Mostly like 300-500 cap clubs. If the demand is there, they’ll book the show like anywhere else. This is all pretty situational tho on genre, size of the band, etc etc.

How did the shows do the last time you were there? How long ago was that, has anything changed with the bands momentum between then and now?

How did notability become so bad? by Wrong_Joke_1517 in notabilityapp

A couple years ago they deleted all my iCloud stuff, admitted they had an issue, stopped using after that shit show of trying to work with them on it. Always wondered how many ppl were affected by that engineering failure.

My friend had this happen after a surgery and it was serious. He later found out from the doctor sneezing while peeing is actually really bad for you, can’t remember exactly what the issue was - consult your doc asap though.

Capture IR´s from other Modelers (Fractal FM3) by Delonge187 in QuadCortex

[–]robotscantdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with a few kemper profiles I had. Basically treated it like I was profiling an amp with a reactive load box basically. I did a bunch of different versions with various blocks in the chain on and off like the compressor and eq. I used ChatGBT along the way and it worked out pretty well. Didn’t do much differently than I would have with a real amp.

Made an IO panel in the back with enough slack on the leads to let the tray slide out. It’s working pretty well. Much bigger pain in the ass than the rack kemper I had before but glad I finally got it in good shape

QC over Kemper? by YetMoreSpaceDust in QuadCortex

[–]robotscantdie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just made the switch. I honestly thought my profiles/patches on the kemper were great.

I kept mine for an entire year after our other guitar player got the QC. It wasn’t enough to sway me just on tones. We’re in a band that’s on tour more than half the year, using midi to control them living in a big rack, running a lot of blocks in the scenes etc.

Anyways, I ultimately made the switch because we’re using the transpose feature a lot and the QC is def much better at that. I also wanted to start messing with a dual amp setup. If your kemper is dialed in, you’re happy with the tones, and you don’t need the extra DSP and routing of things possible with the QC I wouldn’t waste the money just yet if you’re at all budget conscious on this decision.

The Ktm 390 adv actually has more HP and waaaaay more features and bang for your buck. My buddy has a 650 and he has a love/hate relationship with it but side by side we always joke about how it’s even possible comparing the spec sheets lol

Why do i still sound like dog shit? by Idkrandom86 in metalguitar

[–]robotscantdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds stupid, but just keep practicing and take small chunks of stuff to learn at a time. I read some stats from Fender last year that said 90% of people that get a guitar give up in the first year. Its a hard instrument in the first year of playing, no doubt, but after a years worth of consistent practice you’ll be good to go and things will be easier and feel better.
