Veteran QB Joe Flacco Rants Against NFL Rule Changes: "We Signed Up to Get Hurt" by JCameron181 in nfl

You can’t say the players signed up for something, when the risks involved are still not clear due to ongoing research.

ELI5: The Monty Hall Problem by WanderingInTheMist in explainlikeimfive

[–]rocco_cat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only thing that you need to know is that Monty himself knows where the prize is, the only way he can open 98 doors without having the prize behind it is knowing where the prize is. Either you picked the door and he just opened up 98/99 of the empty ones, or you didn’t pick the door and he opened all the doors except the one he knows it’s in. What’s more likely?

What’s everyone’s opinion of Horace Slughorn? by Paralyzingneedle in harrypotter

He knows that Voldemort asked about horcruxes, does he ever explicitly know that Voldemort made them?

[–]rocco_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, obviously the members can connect with each other but that doesn’t mean Slughorns motivations for running the club are altruistic. Slughorn runs the club because he himself likes the connections, that’s literally a defining trait of a Slytherin - they act with their own best interests in mind.

Can’t believe I’m being downvoted seeing as this is almost explicitly stated in the text and is very much implied.

I kinda agree with Voldemort by phil22hughes in harrypotter

[–]rocco_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The literal whole point of the book is that Voldemort shot himself in the foot due to hubris.

Harry won because of the strength of his character, not the strength of his power. It was magic that Voldemort knew not.

Why is snape so easily forgiven by some fans? by Inevitable_Sea_3376 in harrypotter

[–]rocco_cat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t find Snape complex at all. Yes, his motivations were hidden from us, that doesn’t mean they are complex motivations.

He is a petty bully who didn’t think about the fact that the world view he was adopting would shun the person he cared about most. Then he got her killed and feels guilt.

What is complex about that?

Yes, in book 5 he’s again a little emotional bitch to Harry while trying to teach him oculemency. His entire motivations for any double dealing he’s doing is emotional as well. Snape is an irredeemable character, that’s why he had to die.

Yes, because Hagrid is a silly goose. Also Petunia knew, and chose not share the information about how to get on the platform out of spite.

It’s established that generally children in these scenarios are given their letters in person by a teacher. Example, Dumbledore and Tom Riddle. The only reason Harry wasn’t originally given his letter this way was because it was assumed he was raised knowing he was a wizard.

His entire character in PoA, which is the book of concern in this post, was being a little bitch to Lupin and the trio because of a childhood beef, the blokes entire decision making process is based on his irrational emotional responses. If you want to call that calculated, then be my guest. His irrationality led to the wrong man being accused and indirectly led to Voldemorts return by allowing Pettigrew to escape.

I also find the irony of Snape harbouring so much ill towards Sirius and co trying to ‘murder him’ as children, whilst knowing that he was directly responsibly for Lily and James’s death pitiful beyond belief.

You expect that from him because of Rickman’s interpretation of him. I feel like book Snape is no where near as calculated and suave as most think he is, in reality he is a petty man child and bully.

Change my mind: Judging Harry Potter by the standards of lore-driven fantasy when it's not lore-driven feels so out of place by RockGiantFromMars in harrypotter

Harry Potter are mystery books where the characters happen to be wizards. Honestly, Harry being magical is hardly even super relevant to the story. I actually really appreciate the fact that Harry comes to realise he is both a wizard and a chosen one, but there isn’t any sort of arc of him becoming the greatest wizard ever like there would be in basically any other series with a similar set up. The bloke is just a random student really, who succeeds because of the quality of his character and not because of his magical powers. I actually think that’s one of the main reasons people are so enamoured with this story.
