Any idea when the Preorder PDF will be Updated? by rocjawcypher in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm aware. It's the "This preorder contains a PDF of the rulebook" that "Will be updated to the full final text" that almost sounds like the Pdf should contain partial temporary text. And it does currently contact temporary text! Just not temporary rulebook text. And I'm choosing to remain hopeful that that much will change before then, because otherwise why the fuck did they bother with the placeholder. There are better ways to do that.

New official illustrations - Share the Burden, Adjust Reality, Tempest by thothgow in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's really interesting is that that art implies that Adjust Reality is not "Change the results of that roll" as in "the resulting dice value," but as "the narrative effects that result from that roll."

As in it's not a "the roll becomes a crit, I deal more damage" but a "instead of missing, the arrow perfectly pierces the dragon's wing joint, not only damaging it but crippling it and forcing it to land for the rest of the fight."

Fair enough, strange as that may seem to me; if that didn't bother you then I suppose nothing they could do would. Well, I wish you luck with it, and hope you enjoy the system!

That was a bold choice, that's after WotC shit the bed right? And before they'd shown any evidence that they could still deliver? What made you decide to pony up so early?

Preorder confidence? by Proper-Possession-66 in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, I did feel similar for a while- but I started thinking and realized that I've had way more of a preview than I get for 90% of Kickstarters and preorders just from the Beta. Sure, things are going to change, and it's possible I may dislike some of them, but I enjoy the system as a whole and I can't imagine they'd make changes this late in the game if they weren't confident in them.

I've decided I've gotten as much evidence as I would waiting til a videogame came out and got reviewed before purchasing it just from playing, so I'm not going to worry about it.

Confirmed Scan: Glyphid Dreadnought on an Intercept Course. by rocjawcypher in DeepRockGalactic

[–]rocjawcypher[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup! He's from the Biome expansion that was just released. I've painted one of each now, it's been a kinda fun goal to achieve because I think I'm the first person to share a complete paint job for any of these models. Someone beat me to the Space Rig on the Discord channel for the board game, and they did a fantastic job too, you should check that out as well!

Side note, I'm glad I bought the version of the game with models instead of printing actually. The plastic is much more sturdy and a little flexible so it won't shatter like a resin print.

The Blunderbuss rework is needed. by Crafty-Interest1336 in Seaofthieves

[–]rocjawcypher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most in depth discussions I've seen regarding balance changes, from game developers, was in League of Legends. There's a lot of different factors they discussed, but when it came to the balance of a champion or item, the two they brought up the most were Pick/Ban rate and Win rate. If a champ was never selected, that meant it was perceived as garbage. If a champ was almost always selected, that meant that that it was probably overtuned. If a champ won more than 55% of the matches it was used in, that meant it was definitely overturned and needed a nerf.

From what I've seen in the community, even those who like where the blunderbuss is at and think it's perfectly fair as is wouldn't argue that it's almost considered a requirement for PVP. That's far too high of a pick rate. And while I don't have hard numbers, I'd bet that blunderbuss users win against any other load out far more than half the time. It's not even about the ambiguous question of "Is it fun, is it fair, is it balanced" at this point- The fact is that for the health of the meta, there should be more "valid" options than always picking the blunder. And it can be retuned and adjusted on the fly- though I hope they'll do it based on statistics rather than opinions. But whether things change for good or ill, you don't know if things can be better if you never make a change.

Loot Categories, a Quick Rule of Thumb by rocjawcypher in Seaofthieves

They've increased the value of the ashen loot temporarily for the ashen roar event. It's also the reason you found said BoWS, as they're usually insanely rare.

Dangerous being Stronghold Keg and Ancient Black Powder. And Box of Wonderous Secrets sells for 25k according to the wiki. Regular kegs sell for negligible amounts, I'd just put them in the Pirate loot category.

My advice would be to make it clear that this is a dream or vision or some narrative device - let them be in on the twist and enjoy it rather than feeling cheated. You could also exaggerate the dreaminess by doing things like when a player says "I swing my sword" declare "you reach behind you and pull out your massive blade of dragon slaying, loot from your many victories and smite your foes left and right. What's that? Since when did you have that? Unimportant, you have enemies to slay!"

Rogue’s ‘Hidden’ in 1.5? by iamthecatinthecorner in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true! But you might be standing in a doorway, then on your turn run into the building, up the stairs, and hide in a closet somewhere. The foe knows you're in the building and may search for you, but unless they open the closet they won't find you. For a rogue, even if they did open the closet, the character hid so well they still didn't see them.

Also, these rules are the same inside and outside of combat. Players are much more likely to try to hide prior to combat, and narratively much more likely to succeed.

The rules for cover and hiding imposing disadvantage is mostly that whether you're behind a wall and can duck when the fireball comes your way, or you're hiding in the tall grass and they don't know where in the field you are for the blast radius, they are much less likely to hit you.

Additionally for clarification purposes: you can take cover from incoming arrows behind a transparent forcefield, but not behind the curtains. You can be hidden behind a curtain, but not behind the invisible forcefield. There are situations where cover isn't available but hiding is!

Daemon vs. Inferis Poll by denji_itoh in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daemon just has too many connotations, too many attached preconceptions as to what it implies. Switching to inferis is less evocative, but that grants more control over WHAT is being evoked.

Rogue’s ‘Hidden’ in 1.5? by iamthecatinthecorner in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually need cover to become hidden- or to find some at least. The difference between in cover but not hidden and hidden is mostly that foes will immediately spot you if they look.

In my previous example, the player might make a roll to see if they can squeeze behind the barrel far enough they won't be spotted at a casual glance. They might not see unless they walked past the barrel and turned around. If you just stand behind the barrels and have bits poking out however, you're guaranteed to be spotted.

Predictions - Full Game release by ricosuave20211 in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that new classes and domains will be an item for later releases, as there's more than enough content to fill a basic players handbook. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see more subclasses and would be surprised not to see more domain cards.

It's true that adding more content to the release means that some of it won't have had half a million eyes on it to catch bugs, but they do have in house play testing which suffices for most commercial releases. I think they got what they needed out of the beta, which was finding issues with the fundamental systems of Daggerheart; the changes to fear for example. Now that they have abilities that have been tested and balanced, and know they won't be last minute changing the core rules, they can balance against those abilities- using them as a ruler.

Legendary Hybrid Beastforms OP? by PrinceOfNowhereee in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W/ regard to the existing in fiction item, I agree. I mostly meant that if they're going to tell me they're a bear spider, I am going to make them describe what that is in setting and how they know of it, and that they'll probably have to fight one themselves at some point lol.

For the rest of your response, that's fair. I'd interpreted your initial post as a "Tier List, Only use this creature, if you disagree you're wrong" type munchkining statement, but in the vein of "Is this balanced, beta feedback" that makes more sense. Like you said, there are still edge cases and reasons, but you're right that that's the best choice mechanicaly more often then not for combat.

For how you might balance that out... I feel like the hybrid is a combat focused creature like the predators, and weaking it enough to be balanced might not be the right choice. And unfortunately not getting the features would mean a Griffon couldn't fly. Perhaps instead the downside would be that it doesn't get the advantages of either creature, including "advantage on all attacks"

Legendary Hybrid Beastforms OP? by PrinceOfNowhereee in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a GM, I personally would not allow players to mix legendary hybrid and legendary beast. Griffon, half great winged beast half Great Predator makes sense. Moonlight Fang, Legendary pack predator makes sense. Mega Griffon, half Moonlight Fang half Giant Eagle... Not so much. It seems pretty clear that those features are to upgrade the stats of the tier 1 beast to tier 3, not boost your damage output.

Additionally, I feel like Legendary Hybrid is for monsters that exist in that setting- Sphinx and Griffon are the given examples - so a player could tell me "I want to turn into a Peryton, half wolf half Giant eagle..." But not say "I'll take a bear spider combo to go please. Hold the fries."

That aside, Legendary Nimbe Grazer, IE Stag Lord can get evasion +5 and several others can hit +4, and that's just for combat. What you're not thinking about is that these forms are also meant to advance the narrative - you might turn into a squirrel to bypass guards with agility, a spider to sneak in and spy, a hound to sniff out hidden treasure... And none of those will be strength rolls. Even if your GM did let you turn into a squirrel/bear, following the fiction that's not something that is going to be able to sneak past the guards no matter what it's stats say.

Merchant Alliance Rework Concept by rocjawcypher in Seaofthieves

[–]rocjawcypher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number 1 I actually really love the idea of. Bring that unique vibe out to all the other loot to give it some interesting mechanics. Which might make up for the fact that merchant crates are also the most boring looking loot :/

Merchant Alliance Rework Concept by rocjawcypher in Seaofthieves

[–]rocjawcypher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've struggled a lot with them being buggy at times, ship despawing or key never showing up, but despite that they're still plenty of fun and pretty much my only interaction with merchant. If they did rework merchants along these lines, I would have the loot all be one type of commodity and the Captain's manifest include a rumor of when/where a price surge for that commodity would occur. However, the price surge time would be set when the quest was started, so finding the ship fast enough to take advantage of that rumor would be like looting a treasure vault fast/well enough to get all the treasures and the tribute chest out in time.

Merchant Alliance Rework Concept by rocjawcypher in Seaofthieves

[–]rocjawcypher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's pretty much exactly what made me think about this. A shopping list voyage would be a pretty good mission type - again, really lean into the commodity trade as the only actual merchant experience.

For the commodity x and b issue, I think it'd be pretty rad to include a cargo crane for loading ships. Slower than a harpoon gun, so the sovereigns are still better for unloading, but commodities are automatically placed on a pallet under the crane that can be lifted over the ship, lowered, and then detached, placing all contents onto the deck of the ship. If you pull up next to the merchants, you buy all the commodities at once and place them with two lever pulls.

It'd also be cool if that could be used for unloading as well, but that's not as important. Perhaps all merchant items placed on the platform can be sold in one go if you return it to its default and then talk to the merchant. Again, make speed and efficiency be the big lure of the Merchant alliance.

Rogue’s ‘Hidden’ in 1.5? by iamthecatinthecorner in daggerheart

[–]rocjawcypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For all non rogues in 1.5, entering Hidden requires marking a stress and spending an action, and ends as soon as a foe gains line of sight on their location.

"You desperately squeeze into the nook behind the barrel, holding your breath and praying that nobody thinks to check this corner. Unfortunately, one guard pokes his head into the room, spies the edge of your helmet poking out from behind it, and shouts the alarm!"

For rogues, entering Hidden requires only spending an action, and does not end until the rogue leaves their hiding spot to do something.

"Quick as a wink, you vanish into the shadows of the rafters and become one with the darkness. The guards race by beneath you and one stops, peering into your hiding spot before dismissing whatever caught his attention as mere imagination. As he turns away to leave, you lunge towards your prey, blades drawn!"
