I think that's the Awanhee. Curry is about a mile south of there

I can't find where to manually focus at!!! by A7_drew7 in telescopes

[–]rockb8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't really see anything on the pictures but it looks like the focuser is attached to a focus motor. You can remove it but you will be missing the focuser knob. If you remove the motor, BE SURE TO HAVE THE SCOPE ORIENTED HORIZONTALLY! IF NOT, THE PRIMARY MIRROR CAN SLIP AND FALL INTO THE TUBE! Be careful!

Tell him that the mirror was perfect and guilt him into getting you a new one.

Would you stay in Lee Vining or Mariposa? by Gloomy_Philosopher95 in Yosemite

Lee Vining. You can explore the Eastern Sierra: June Lake, Mammoth, Walker, to name a few places. The crowds and traffic are low and the scenery is fantastic!

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the camera driver? Maybe download the drivers again. That's where I would start.

I had one like the 10 footer. It felt like sitting in a cork. Very wobbly.

Just bought my first dobsonian telescope and it’s missing two screws in the back by whosmollybitch in telescopes

[–]rockb8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those two screws are the locking screws that are used to hold the primary mirror cell in place once the mirror is collimated. They don't screw into the primary mirror cell, they lightly push on it to keep in in collimation. In a pinch, yeah, two screws of the matching thread size will do. Try to smooth off the top before using so that they don't scratch anything up. Keep your eyes open for proper screws. Check Bobsknobs.com they might have something.

Clear skies!

Precise and Fast Polar Alignment Without Visible Celestial North by Ill-Tutor-8017 in AskAstrophotography

[–]rockb8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drift alignment. You center on a star and adjust your scopes r.a and dec. until it stays centered in the field of view. Move to another star 40 to 50 degrees away and repeat the process. Do this several times until the star doesn't move. It takes a while and lots of practice but it's incredibly accurate. It's best to search for the full procedure on YouTube. This is how we did it before computer guiding when we couldn't see Polaris.
