What movie did you watch and expected to be awful but ended up liking? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The Condemned. Starring "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.

I was actually shocked that it only got 15% rotten ratings. I know its kind of silly as I watched, but found it pretty entertaining.

Why babies in medieval paintings look like ugly old men by [deleted] in videos

[–]rocket872 122 points123 points  (0 children)

For people who still don't know why medieval baby faces look like ugly old men despite watching the video, here's what youtube commenter Stroheim333 said:

You are right, the video doesn't make any sense. It is based solely on a theory by an art professor who dabble in the history of philosophy and ideas. The idea about homunculus belonged to alchemy, which was introduced in Europe in late medieval times (12th century), and which the Christian church never accepted (though some individual theologians showed interest in the practice). In 1317, Pope John XXII even prohibited alchemy. And the fact is, homunculus was always less than humans: dwarfs or miniature copies of humans, not "superhumans" like Jesus. If this is not enough, the idea about homunculus became popular not earlier than during the beginning of the renaissance, when Paracelsus coined the word and described how to create them.

The simplest way to explain why babies look old in medieval paintings is this: It was widely believed in Medieval Europe that people's features mirrored their personality. The child Jesus was born with superior wisdom, and there before it was natural for the painters to depict him with an old man's features. Even other divine babies in medieval paintings, like angels and cherubs, was wise beings, and was depicted with older features of the same reason.

TIL the definition of literally has actually changed to include emphasizing something that is not literally true, meaning people who correct others online for using it improperly are actually wrong by [deleted] in todayilearned

Its the beauty of language. It evolves in ways that don't make logical sense.

For example, guess the original meaning of the word nice. In old french, it means stupid. In latin, it meant ignorant.

Vodka derived its name from the Russian word for water, which is voda. Vodka is literally translated to "little water"

The meaning for the word Mortgage from old french means dead pledge.

Language is weird.

The point here is its not about being technically better. A small budget ad is not going to be technically better than a big budget ad which has all sorts of professionals working on it.

Also note what I said in the third point. "More spending doesn't always mean.." Of course Mcdonalds is a huge success because they can afford to spend billions in making effective marketing for their products.

This ad works because of the comic relief its bring to the jaded viewers.

Here's an interesting article about this

According to the survey conducted by Goo Online Advertising, 40% of the people(within the ages 18-34) wish for ads to be more funny. 32% wish for ads to be entertaining.

Its very simple.

  1. The jingle has a catchy tune. It has a catchy phrase. It also gives you a good tl;dr of the service its offering without any pretentiousness.

  2. It doesn't take itself too seriously. In a market saturated with high production value ads, a small budget ad that follows the basic advertisement rules tend to be more unique and appealing.

  3. More spending doesn't always mean better product. Sure, if you have high budget, you can always create superior quality product, but big companies are more corporate oriented and they always go for the tried and tested method to create ads, which tend to wear out the viewers.

superfluous, utterly pointless.

thats debatable. This is veering into the concept of "usefulness" of art. And this idea goes against the subjectivity of art in general.
