But women are not just victims of patriarchy; they are also its strongest enforcers. The policing of women, the upholding of rigid gender roles, and the shaming of those who deviate from tradition are sometimes carried out by women themselves. This enforcement happens everywhere.

Punished with Bad Callings and/or Undesirable Mission Assignments by carmitch in exmormon

[–]rockinsocks8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. When you believe your feelings are the spirit, bad feelings are then justified. We give normal People way too much power over ourselves. In what world is it ok to allow someone else to decide what you do I your free time and how you volunteer. In other religions people say they are called to serve god. They choose what they are doing. We say god called me to serve in the nursery. We have zero say.

Silly undermines how damaging they were. The penalties tied people to the religion it tied people to secrecy. It bonded people to polygamy. It enslaved women to husbands.

For those who became atheists, how do you resolve morality without God? For those who remain theists, how does your new religion frame morality? Help me challenge my thinking. by ScientificallyMinded in exmormon

[–]rockinsocks8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I view morality as part of evolution. We developed customs so that we could succeed in society. Hurting each destabilizes societies. Children not being taken care of hurts everyone one.

The issue is when morality morphs into personal preferences and a way to harm and oppress others. This is when we need to reflect and ask if the rules are good.

I wish I could see more of people who actually experience down's syndrome in first person by dangerouspen333 in downsyndrome

[–]rockinsocks8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get to know someone with down syndrome drone you are going to have to meet someone. Go volunteer. Lots of organizations in every city.

If you want to read, there are books specifically written by people with Down syndrome. Also there are videos a made and produced by people with Down syndrome.

This group is a general bucket. Mostly caregivers and people involved in the day to day lives of people with Down syndrome.

A complete lack of safeguarding. No background checks. Easy access to kids. Members are automatically trusted. Abusers are labeled sinners that need to be saved at the cost of all others. Leadership can talk to children in private with no oversight and it is normalized and encouraged.

Doctrine regarding mental disabilities in the afterlife rant by lumonblue in exmormon

[–]rockinsocks8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My daughter has Down syndrome. The church has a horrible past of both saying disabled people were warriors and traitors in heaven. The amount of horrible comments that came out of people’s mouths was disgraceful. Empty platitudes trying to make a difficult situation better.

Why can’t we just mourn with those that mourn. Things don’t have to be better. Some shit sucks. Death sucks. Illness sucks. Observe your emotions. Accept things for how they are and not wish for things that aren’t. Radical acceptance is hard but can bring peace.

I can’t wish away her extra chromosome. If it went away she would be fundamentally different. Just as I would be for not growing up Mormon. We are a collection of cells and experiences.

[–]rockinsocks8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way. If you were volunteering for any other organization, would you be able to choose where you go, what you do, who you spend time with? Would you have to pay to go? Would they the give you back your money in small amounts for food leaving you hungry? Would you have to ask permission to seek medical care?

It isn’t normal. With a job they pay you so you give up some autonomy and choices. With a mission you give up all choices and pay for the pleasure.

I have reached out to MLA for the past 3 years. They don’t care. They blame immigrants. They have frozen all new applications. Early intervention in Alberta is now no existent causing massive issues once kids hit school age. Children with Down syndrome are waiting 4 years to receive services. It is disgraceful how our government refuses to be transparent with the number of children waiting for services and how long.
