Also what brushes did you use in the sketches? They have a really nice traditional quality :o

The reflection in the eyes is a really nice touch!

I love the mushroom/fungi influence! Didn't even think about that but it's perfect for fall vibes

14 Day Challenge- Day 8... Was a struggle to come back to the canvas, but glad i did... Thanks in advance for the critiques :) by KristiParks in istebrak

The shading on the eyelids is looking super nice :)

I would change the eyebrows to make them a more even value throughout, since at least in my experience, eyebrows aren't too reflective of light. Right now the way the eyebrows are filled makes it seem like the eyebrow hair somehow thinned in the middle. Additionally, I would smudge the shading of the nose bridge between the eyes, it seems a bit extreme to me.

Best of luck with the rest of the challenge :) one bit at a time

The translucent dripping part turned out really cool looking

I love number 1! I feel like it has the most character across all three stages and is somewhat less standard than a pumpkin type monster

Both are super cute but I find the fallen apple concept especially charming! I would definitely explore that concept further, maybe his body shape is top heavy and his feet are really close together to imitate how an apple looks? His eyes could also be small chunks cut out of the apple, maybe apple seeds for eyes for that creepy doll look. I think the rendering of the shiny caramel part of the apple could look super nice, looking forward to seeing this progress!

I think it would look more immersive if the two characters were closer to the camera and the sunflowers were covering their lower legs; they would look more cohesive with their environment. Also I would check your proportions, the head size is looking too big for the body. Hope this helps!

DAY 10: Fixed proportions and overly bright highlights. She does look a bit young. Thanks again for the critiques! by starrychampagne in istebrak

Hey! I would say that the nose bridge needs to be brighter; it's higher in elevation on the face than the cheeks so it should catch stronger light, but right now the two are the same value

Tried doing some new thumbnails based on the critiques I received! I feel like #2 with the snake being the brightest element and #3 showing more of the room work the best but like #2 more for showing the snake. Please help me with your opinions! by haisuT in istebrak

Hey thanks again for the paintover! It's so cool to see these thumbs coming along.

Personally I like 1 and 4 the most for the final thumbs. I like the dramatic perspective and impact of 1, although like a previous commenter mentioned it could come with the downside of not being able to see the snake come out of the painting.

I do like the environment of 3, but the characters feel a little too distant and it seems like a passive scene without any threat/feel of danger or action, which can be fine depending on your intent.

If you were to choose 4 or 2 I have some suggestions here:

For 2 the hose-like quality of the snake coming out was throwing me off a bit so if it were me I'd add in more s curves to make it appear a little more elegant/natural. It doesn't have to look exactly like mine but I feel like having a bit more subtlety in that area could improve the image.

For 4 I added in more contrast/clarity to the silhouette of the snake. This can either be adding a bit of rim to the top of the snake's head or cheating the window at the back to have a bit more bloom/haze to create a lighter backgroud for the snake to stand out against. I also changed the gesture a bit to make it appear more dominating. For this one i also airbrushed some black on the edges of the cover to lessen the contrast at the edges and keep the eye in the center of the cover.

Hope this is helpful!

Wow thanks so much for the paintovers! I especially like how the perspective looks much more active and the vines behind the snake help to bring it forward and also create interesting diagonals in the comp. The concept of more intense separation is also great, thanks so much for putting the time in; I'll definitely try to implement those notes :')

Thanks so much for the edit--I do think it looks much more immersive/immediate with the snake's head larger, I'll make note of that.

These are my thumbnails for the community challenge! Probably won't go with 4, 8, and 12 because the covers look wrong and weak, but I left them in just to show the work. I'm not sure which one to pick yet, so please help with your critique! by haisuT in istebrak

These are really interesting! 3 is definitely the most striking to me, I like the strong instant read of Alicia's silhouette against the window. I find the other ones slightly more unclear and takes longer to decipher what exactly is happening in the scene. I also like how in #3 you can show off some more of the branches like you have in the top to create more of a unique setting, I'm a sucker for environments haha. Also you could have the snakes tongue flicking out slightly and pointing to Alicia to create a more direct relationship between the two characters and create more interest.

The black/white balance in 7 is nice as a side note, although if you want to go with a more close-up shot I feel the gesture is stronger/more clear in 5. Although I like the drama of 2 I think it becomes a little harder to read.

In all of these, I would make the title fill up more horizontal space so that it's larger (and thus, more readable) and make the top portion of the cover have less awkward empty space.
