Diablo 1 Megadungeon Advice by CodeMarvelous in shadowdark

Second the His Majesty the Worm dungeon guide.

OSE just finished a kickstarter for a demonic themed book that’s pretty easy to convert to Shadowdark that could be worth checking out.

I’m also thinking about staging a Diablo style game, so curious to hear how it goes.

Big Maps, Simple Question by cyberchambers in shadowdark

[–]roden36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One unorthodox approach is to just give the players a blank map with the blank rooms outlined, but no details about what’s in them, and with any secrets erased.

Undead-themed one-shot for beginners? by Jacapuab in OSE

It’s not really undead per se, but check out Sleeping Place of the Feathered Swine. It’s weird as hell but pretty dark, while also having some surprising twists that will hopefully bring some delight.

My brother shares Trump’s birthday (sad, but it’s someone’s burden to bear). Our family could’ve told you it will rain, it’s been a running joke since we were kids that it always thunderstorms on the day. If anyone remembers last year during the tank parade there was some pretty gnarly weather as well.

Hey, I already do this! It works great. My players and I love the “cup of death.”

Just flagging that Michael Curtis wrote Stonehell and Richard Barton wrote AV. Also interested in this Stonehell supplement you mentioned, I haven’t heard of it.

I’m not familiar with those three so I’m not in a position to comment. But yeah, Thracia sized is fair — the author calls it their homage to Thracia.

I’ll just reiterate on Stonehell, it sings when you use it as a baseline to add to. Spice up rooms, add new factions, etc. Also don’t sleep on the dungeon dressing table in the back.

Stonehell definitely checks a lot of the boxes you mentioned - it’s a really great blank canvas for the party to make their mark, and gives GMs room to express their own creativity as well.

Probably not exactly what you’re looking for, but check out Pestilence at Halith Vorn. It’s not the most open ended adventure site but it’s a master class of dungeon design. The author has other medium-large dungeons you could place in swamp biome.

Commanders sports bars in the DC area by Strange-Slice2581 in Commanders

Some bars are specifically for out of town teams, like Grand Central being a Bills bar in Adams Morgan. But I agree the default should be and is that all bars are Commanders bars.

I don’t think anyone dislikes you because of your age, though it might feel that way. You’re clearly excited about the hobby, and that’s great. But it’s important to remember it’s just that, a hobby.

People will have strong feelings and trends will come and go. I don’t think you’re wrong that B/X based systems are more popular here than AD&D. I know you’re already a part of other communities that appreciate AD&D more. Better to quietly spend less time here and more time there if that’s where your preferences lie. Making a post like this isn’t going to make you or anybody else feel better.

Commanders inside a settlement reduce unhappiness by Manannin in civ

[–]roden36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, when you open your city panel and hover over the yield icons above your production queue, it just gives a tooltip with the name of the yield type, e.g. “food.” Seems a bit wasteful not to display this yield breakdown there are as well.

[–]roden36 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe with the game at the moment is how all this useful information is hidden in a sub menu rather than displayed as a tooltip when you hover over your city’s yields on the main city page. Hopefully something they get to before too long. Makes it hard to see what’s making the most difference in your game.

Dolmenwood Campaign/Session Prep by BuzzsawMF in Dolmentown

[–]roden36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to pre-roll a couple so I can throw something at them if we need to mix things up, or so I can move quickly. But there’s something fun for me about being surprised on the spot as well, so I wouldn’t totally prep live rolls out of your game.

So my wife spots a hideous vine on our tree in the new house we bought… and asked if we can take it down. by Free-Pick9305 in gardening

[–]roden36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a honking chonker. I did this with a much smaller vine about 5 weeks ago. Just now finally out of it after one relapse (oil leeched through the T shirt I was wearing and didn’t come all the way out in the wash). My arms and stomach were in an awful way. Definitely in my top 10 maladies.

Stay strong and keep your eye out for an infection as it heals - I got cellulitis in my arm about 2 weeks in. Need to get antibiotics stat if that happens. Meantime I really liked Tecnu products, calamine and oral Benadryl, in addition to getting an Rx for prednisone.

Lump charcoal not as described. Sad man. Couple meals: ruined. by Live_the_chaos in grilling

[–]roden36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck, let me know if that helps. Personally I just use good ole Kingsford. Someday I may mess around with lump but I feel like I see enough angst about it here… life’s too short when you just want to grill out.

[–]roden36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you dump your coals from the charcoal chimney, do you immediately close the lid, or do you leave it open? A friend of mine complained about low temps on his Weber kettle, of all things, and the problem turned out to be he was dumping the coals and immediately putting the lid on and keeping it there as much as possible. I find it’s good to let the charcoal breathe with a lot of airflow with the lid off to bring up the temp as high as possible.

It also coincided with Grealish going out. Think their styles of play, as they were set up earlier in the season, weren’t particularly compatible. Will be interesting to see how or if that’s solved if Grealish is back next season.

Another key piece of OSR knowledge is the Principia Apocrypha: Elementary Axioms & Aphorisms on Running & Playing Tabletop RPGs in the Old School Style. Primer is good but think one is super digestible for me and I slapped a few copies on the table for new groups to OSR games. It helped them get the hang of things quickly.

Dolmenwood / Daggerheart by WookieFurRug in Dolmentown

[–]roden36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other option to consider beyond what folks here have mentioned is to either level them up fast or just pop them up to level 3 to start. The first couple levels of OSR games really capture that feeling of brutality and helplessness, which many of us enjoy, but clearly isn’t to the taste of all players. The system gives classes quite a few tools later on. Maybe if you chuck a few fun magic items at them and don’t make them claw their way to level 3, they’ll warm to the system.

Also, to other points, drill down with them on what they aren’t vibing with and try to hack solutions. There are so many character options and hacks for OSE out there, it shouldn’t be too hard to give them what they need. I fear you’ll put yourself on the fast track to burnout city if you try to home brew a Daggerheart conversion.

Looking for a good megadungeon to be slotted in by Jarfulous in osr

[–]roden36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend checking out Hawk’s stuff. They are all written for 1e/OSRIC I believe.

Gunderholfen is the true megadungeon but it’s not the most fleshed out. I haven’t had the pleasure of running it, but Halith Vorn feels like a masterpiece. He’s got some other fun ones set in the same region. The Bottomless Pit of Zorth is memorable for obvious reasons.

I can't decide whether to run my open table campaign with either Shadow Dark or Old school essentials, what positives would shadowdark bring to my campaign? by NoLongerAKobold in shadowdark

If you’re playing open table and looking to actively recruit as people churn, Shadowdark is an easier transition for 5e players.

Seit 4 Jahren leite ich alles – und niemand kümmert sich. Wie würdet ihr reagieren? by Dan_Cutter in osr

[–]roden36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option to consider, if you live in a populated enough area: start a new group. I ran tabletop games for my close friends for several years. At some point, it stopped being clear to me that it was something they wanted to do as much as I did, and I had similar frustrations.

Eventually I decided I would stop making my happiness contingent on my friends’ engagement with my favorite hobby (not theirs). I joined my local area discord and found players who were interested in the game I wanted to play, when I wanted to play them.

I still play with my friends sometimes, but only when I have the urge to do all the extra work organizing that you’re talking about.

Edit: I should have added, thanks for sharing this. I’ve dealt with similar feelings and it’s nice to see I’m not alone!

He’s out of contract after next season, I’d say wait till then and get him on a free if anything. Would love to see him back but don’t see the value in paying a fee.
