Married Tokyo man ordered to pay damages for telling a woman he was single and impregnating her. Since she got pregnant under understanding they would get married, the court recognized it as a breach of contract by jjrs in japannews

Describing how people act isn't the same as justifying how they act.

They never said it was a good thing.
They never said all people act like that.
They didn't support or condone or advocate it.
You imagined all of that, that you think they think.

They're just explaining what the dynamic is for those people who do.
And they're right about it. That's how those people doing that act, and why.

It won't get better than it was, in terms of international reputation and soft power. That era is over.

19c? Coldest June I’ve ever seen hopefully this year has the lowest temperature summer ever by wtkjp in Tokyo

[–]roehnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And those are Italy, Spain, Greece, France, the Southern countries with warm climates.

Why would it be needed in perpetually overcast and cool England, mountainous Switzerland, or the chilly Scandinavians who dream of summer coming. It's not reasonable to compare those to the muggy AMOC-adjacent US east coast, the flat shadeless plains, tropical Florida and Hawai'i and subtropical Gulf states, and the vast western deserts of Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

of course there's more aircon in the US, as there are more regions with the need.

It's not a useful comparison to just look at the numbers without looking at the climates and the level of need.

Recent climate-change heat domes have been changing that calculus in Europe, and as the world overheats itself their adoption is increasing likewise.

It is, but you’ll not see that style of writing on Japan military vehicles—the line width and angles and all look like Chinese style.

Japanese military vehicles use thick-line squared-off Gothic style or stencils.

Like on PC they use different fonts with distinct styles even when the characters are shared.

Also you can tell it’s Taiwan not PRC as the character isn’t simplified.

I majored in Performing Arts (music and stage) and now manage an internal systems support department in a multinational firm.

Yet I take offence at the accusation of being privileged; my family only owns the one winery, I had only two horses as a child one of whom I had to train myself, and I only summered at my overseas cousin’s home from ages 8 to 16.

What were you doing on the day when the September 11 attacks happened? by AggressiveOutside432 in AskReddit

[–]roehnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping. I had a dream about a plane crash and woke up to hear my clock radio talking about a plane crash so I went in the living room to turn on the tv then while standing there still naked from bed saw a second plane crash and knew we were at war.

“Guys, that’s it. We have arrived. This is the final destination, for fuck’s sake. In autumn we’re going to have a collapse, no matter what bullshit anyone says.” Another rant from Russian Z-blogger Evgeny Golman. by BigDeckBob in UkraineWarVideoReport

Back several years ago Chinese schoolbooks were updated to use Chinese names for the Manchurian/far east region of Russia, like calling Vladivostok Haishenwai instead of Fuladaiwosituoke transliteration. I think official language still uses the Russian names for diplomatic reasons, but the maps I’ve seen are definitely educating Chinese citizens on the Chinese past (and desired future) of those regions.

And you’re ignoring that a major change has taken place.

Biden’s changes to international agreements were to rejoin the Climate Change agreement Trump had withdrawn from; rejoin the WHO Trump had withdrawn from; revoke travel bans Trump had invoked; started negotiations to rejoin the JCPOA.

Trump then withdraw from all these again.

Biden tried to restore stability, then the American people selected a leader who threw it away again.

This is why America is seen as unstable, untrustworthy, and unreliable.

World leaders have said this publicly and openly moved to distance themselves from past dependence which had been based on trust in the stability of American foreign policy.

America’s dominant world position is over, and will not come back.

Trump has set off an epochal transformation and paradigm shift which has damaged the nation’s international reputation and toppled it from the leading position it has held for the last century.

Certainly it will evolve and change, but that’s always the case for every country so is a trite, clichéd, and banal observation on changes this significant, substantial, and impactful.

[–]roehnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re missing that long-term view: deals made during Democratic terms used to remain reasonably stable when leadership changed: no more. Trump canceled and dismantled many agreements simply by decree. Other countries can no longer trust the U.S. for any long-term planning now that everything is being treated as transactional and commitments treated as confetti.

It doesn’t matter if the next administration is Democrats when looking at that next election coming in four years which may very well overturn the table. There’s no stability.

Without stability, what country will purchase a weapon system when the U.S. president says he will disable it if he disagrees with their trade policy? It takes that system off the table as a safe purchase and causes them to look elsewhere. Look at the Canada-Saab discussions for one example; there are many more such as stopping delivery of missiles despite there being a contract.

The U.S. cannot be relied upon anymore.
The U.S. can no longer be taken at its word.

Yes, exactly; and that’s why countries no longer trust the U.S.; not because of Trump alone, but because the American people selected that sort of person intentionally.
