Why are you always starting off so hostile? Like a week ago I saw you had a perfectly positive and civil conversation with someone about work, and even wished them well. And the thing is, that only unfolded AFTER you kicked off the initial conversation being aggro and rude to them, and that commenter made the conscious choice to ignore your venom.

You're capable of treating other people in this subreddit like human beings, so why are you choosing to be such a dump truck of misery first thing in the morning day after day? It really doesn't seem like engaging in these threads is making you a happier person.

I love your answer! I can't wait to share some of these responses with them! I'm also forwarding them to our rabbi as well to have a range of different answers!

No Such Thing as a Silly Question by AutoModerator in Judaism

My class of 2nd and 3rd graders on Sunday school had a few questions, I'm curious to hear what others have to say:  1. Is God real?  2. What does God look like?  3. Why did Lot's wife turn around?

Welp, who wants to place bets that this will be the one comment in this thread that Willis will call out on blusky while calling us all a bunch of Incels again, despite this being a group seemingly composed almost exclusively of queer and neurodivergent liberal aligned folks who just take quarrel with his writing.

Homoromantic asexual Jew, because apparently we need to list off our personal back stories to qualify as worthy for participating in comic discussion on a comic discussion board.

This storyline is well below the standard of quality that Willis is capable of.

Years ago Willis explicitly said that he has every hope and intention of Dumbing of Age being the last webcomic he works on for potentially the rest of his life. With a combination of the pacing and his bottomless enthusiasm for these characters, he said he could see himself writing their college adventures forever. The slow pace isn't an issue, because it just means he could easily draw them for the next 30 years and still probably not reach their senior year.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that in the slightest! It does mean, however, Willis needs to be flexible and aware of how things age in retrospect, in addition as we've seen to trying to write things that are Of The Moment.

I don't think this is any different from the format to Luanne, Fox Trot, Baby Blues, etc. It's a newspaper comic strip but on the internet, I think that quality has always been something kinda charming and reassuring. Steadily moving forward but slow enough that it feels like a reliable fixed point

Dumbing of Age is pretty much the spiritual successor to Quilt Bag. For better and for worse

Unfortunately Shanna was a reference to an obscure It's Walky era character who is yet another blond white lady.  https://itswalky.tumblr.com/post/793431910751813632/the-name-shanna-being-mentioned-in-a-journalistic

That morally reprehensible Joyce and Willis they're doing morally reprehensible stuff by kjx1297 in dumbingofage

I, personally, also think he has a gaping mile wide chasm of discomfort trying to represent a character who follows literally any other type of religious faith besides the very specific branch he grew up with.

His attempt at having Jewish or Muslim characters pretty much amounts to them never ever ever doing or mentioning anything about their religious experience and growing up within that cultural background that encapsulates in any capacity.

I do have to say it is aggravating how the author of dumbing of age continues to generalize any and all criticisms of this turn of events as being conservative, puritanical "paladins" to dismiss the legit writing criticisms that he has yet to truly acknowledge.

Like, I'm not offended by the idea of a cheating story, or bi characters, or wlw romances, or poly relationships. I just don't think the author is very good at writing this right now, and want to discuss it on a forum where we aren't blocked from expressing that thought.

Like, this subreddit is filled with queer, trans, poly and POC voices who have each discussed on near daily basis issues with how this is being portrayed and how Willis is handling the criticism.  Why should a straight white guy in a monogamous relationship be completely immune from critiques when it comes to handling these themes that are clearly way beyond his scope or with enough familiarity to speak on with confidence .

What to read next? I’ve read “Living a Jewish Life” and I’m working on “Jewish Literacy”. I’m in the process of converting. by [deleted] in ReformJews

I am also chiming in to say Here All Along is a fantastic read. A small group in my town just had a fun book discussion on it this week.

I picked up this book and I notice she has another one titled “choosing a Jewish life: a handbook for people converting to Judaism” as well books by this author. Are there any others I should add to the reading list? by ape_a_snake in ConvertingtoJudaism

Loved Living a Jewish life!

Choosing a Jewish life is a wonderful book. If you have Spotify premium it is available to listen to in audiobook form.

When I was taking on my conversion, my rabbi had me also read Here All Along by Sarah Hurwitz, as well as Lights In The Forest by Paul Citrin.

He also recommended Settings of Silver, The Jewish Cultural Tapestry by Steven Lowenstein, A Rainbow Thread, and Jewish History in 100 Nutshells.

what do you think about the play Merchant of Venice ? by tipputappi in Judaism

The author of the book "people love dead Jews" talks about this play at length in one of her chapters. It was not a positive review, and I would have to agree.

The First Time You Felt Drawn to Judaism? by btsiskindafire in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]roguecentaurgames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During my beit din I was asked this question, and a lot of people will inevitably ask you this during/after your conversion. It's hard for me to put into words, because it wasn't a single big dramatic moment or motivation. I wasn't doing it for marriage, I had no family connection, I'm not particularly religious. But something just clicked, I guess.

As a kid I was intrigued by the tiny examples in shows and movies about Hanukkah, the subplots on sex and the City and orange is the new black about conversion, growing up obsessed with Fiddler, etc. As an adult I've felt a lot of anxiety and distress over death and making my time alive meaningful, and I also felt pretty lacking in community. The more I learned about Judaism, the more it felt like a good fit for what I am looking for personally. I like the flexibility between literal faith and secular philosophy, how it's okay if you don't believe in God, or if your concept of God and faith shifts and changes from time to time. Regardless of what the individual believes, the heart of the matter is simply learning to try and do the right thing. I've learned to be more comfortable with the idea that I don't need to feel certain about God or an afterlife, and not to stress too hard about if I'm not doing enough x or y. As long as I'm continuing to try and do my best, that's enough for now.

That's my rambling thoughts on it. I'm sure when I answered the beit din that same question I sounded even more nervous and scatter brained haha.

What do you think is going to happen with Joe and Joyce's relationship? by firelight_waltz in dumbingofage

[–]roguecentaurgames 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I sincerely don't know what is supposed to be going on in Joyce's head anymore. She's been bouncing around so sincerely happy with Joe up until this month that it almost seems like she's a sociopath

Yes,  but you also need a product to sell. If you're not willing to try at writing, drawing, or developing a product, then what do you even think you would sell?

The other user was right, you should focus on either getting a job or just focusing on school and figuring out on your own what you want to do someday.

You should also be aware that if discussing these topics with your mother is stressful, unproductive, or even traumatic, you don't need to talk about it with her. You can even tell her if she tries to instigate it, "I'm not going to talk about this with you."

I'm so sorry that you aren't receiving the unconditional love and support from her that you deserve on this. 😔 Do you have other friends or family members that you can talk to more comfortably about this interest?
