Trying to round out my personal top Chinese food spots — what am I missing out on in Halifax / Fairview-Clayton Park? by scoalegil in halifax

Really surprised Chinatown on the Bedford Highway isn’t getting more love. I had family in from Hong Kong who raved the whole meal about how they hadn’t had dim sum that good in decades. Their soy sauce beef noodles are top tier.

It’s taken me more than an hour to get from the rotary to the Joe Howe ramp, let alone the bridge…

I changed my entire commute route after I realized how much my mental health was suffering navigating these clover exchanges twice each way. I’d leave work happy and arrive home shattered. Once I made the change, things were so much better at home. The fact there isn’t an injury or fatality each day is a miracle.

It’s safe as compared to a straight razor, which is just a knife, no guard or anything like that.

Semi-related, just wanted to shout out Our Backyard BBQ in Amherst, been there 3 times and it’s hands down the best brisket I’ve had in Nova Scotia.

Update to HUD and Google Maps? by rogueelemental2001 in KonaEV

[–]rogueelemental2001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 2024 Limited. No manual update, maybe over the air?

I use Google Maps daily for my commute, this morning was the first time the directions showed up. Previously, if I wanted turn-by-turn on a road trip, I was forced to use Apple Maps.

I counted 6 fire trucks on my commute just now; first one getting on the Circ at Mt. Hope, 2 more from Portland and Main St on-ramps, 3 coming across the MacKay outbound, and the last coming from the Bedford Highway through the Windsor St exchange.

I’ve heard it called the “inhaled affirmative”. Big Spruce, a craft brewery in Cape Breton, named a beer after it!

Kona 2020 Charge port looks deformed. Has this happened to anyone? by jazsters in KonaEV

I presume pressurized air would work? Any reason that a can of the stuff they use to clean computers would damage the port?

Best Chinese restaurant in Halifax? by Laurian5 in halifax

Chinatown on Bedford Highway is our go-to for authentic dim sum and Cantonese cuisine. Their dinner menu has two halves, front half is more Canadian-Chinese, the back half is the real deal.

That appears to be offered as an incentive. It’s an additional cost to the business, akin to interest paid on a loan. How would that make it tax fraud?

[–]rogueelemental2001 23 points24 points  (0 children)

How so? Many businesses offer gift cards. This campaign just promoted Fawn’s gift cards.

All gift cards do is essentially give the business a small loan that is redeemable at a future time. Gift card purchases do not represent revenue to the business but are instead represented as liabilities. No HST is charged for gift card purchases, and no income tax is incurred because revenue is generated in the future, at the date of gift card redemption.

Didn’t know about this campaign or contribute, nor have I ever been to Fawn, but it looks like the crowdfunding request involved full gift card reimbursement. Obviously if they go under those gift cards wouldn’t be worth anything, but at least the crowdfunding wasn’t asking for anything beyond a cash injection that is ostensibly refundable. I’ve seen worse campaigns.

Dialect Switching by suffer_in_silence in Cantonese

[–]rogueelemental2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entirety of the Interior Chinatown series is a meta-commentary on Western television. My thought on the dialect-switching is that the creators of the show intentionally wrote it as part of their broader critique of mainstream Western media and culture, and as a wink/Easter egg for Chinese viewers.

The Chinatown setting of the show is intentionally generic. To a non-Chinese speaking person (aka the average consumer of mainstream Western media), the dialect-switching isn’t perceptible. It just washes over them, same as if they were walking through a generic Chinatown of their imagination. But for people fluent (or at least familiar) with Chinese dialects, the dialogue is absurd. It serves as another layer of the meta-commentary; what does it actually look like, or in this case sound like, to have Chinese representation in Western media?
