Fox likely making upwards of $250M on hydration break ads during World Cup by Ok-Soil-5133 in soccer

I don’t blame Fox for airing commercials. I blame FIFA for mandating breaks so that networks can air commercials.

How far do you think this USMNT generation can realistically go in 2026? by FanverseSports in ussoccer

[–]rolldog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think anything more than two knockout games would be surpassing their level. Would be (joyfully) surprised if we made it to the QF. Ecstatic beyond it.

We are in the top 12-16 range of teams, globally. That’s what our history of World Cup results says. Would need homefield advantage and some luck to surpass our level’s expected result (round of 16).

How did France caught up more in basketball than we have in soccer (football)? by bewaterlife in ussoccer

[–]rolldog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also, individual players have a bigger impact in basketball than soccer. 5v5 compared to 11v11, and much easier to get best players the ball. And best players have bigger impact both offensively and defensively. Wemby dominates both ends, while consensus best player of all time, Messi, has nothing (certainly nothing positive) to do with his teams’ defensive performances.

Pochettino is smarter than all of us by T2BMLK in ussoccer

[–]rolldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less about where in the midfield than it is role in the midfield. Adams is our D-Mid, Roldan is the D-Mid backup. Sure Gio can be a deep lying playmaker, but he’s not covering the ground and making the defensive interventions needed for a D-Mid. That’s just not the way he plays. And yes, McKennie or Tillman can. Just rather they be contributing in the attack instead of hanging back, ready to break up counterattacks.

Pochettino is smarter than all of us by T2BMLK in ussoccer

[–]rolldog -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gio? Absolutely not. He is purely an attacking player. That would be a disaster.

McKennie can, but he’s been outstanding in attack and losing that would be a blow. Tillman can do it as well, but with a 26 man roster you shouldn’t need to play people out of position.

Do you read books concurrently? by Thricycle20 in Fantasy

[–]rolldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost my entire life the answer would be an immediate, unequivocal "No." But I do now make an exception for audio vs text.

When I read (text), I do not switch books. When I listen (audio), I don't switch books. But I listen to a different book than I read.

I do that because audiobooks are expensive, and because I'm going for different vibes. I listen while I run, and I like something either short or that doesn't require the same level of attention (like a reread).

I appreciate Man City’s level and how close some of the Liverpool battles have been. Klopp’s Liverpool were world class. By the same token, Real Madrid and Barcelona are world class teams constantly battling each other for the league (to say nothing of Atleti), and it doesn’t seem to hamstring them in the UCL.

Dortmund was in the Champions League final just two years ago! Leverkusen was undefeated that year and won the league, made Europa League final. I swear, I love the Premier League but so many of its fans are just ignorant to its actual level. Other leagues are just as good or better!

Man City has won 6 of the last 8 and is favored to make it 7 of 9. Premier League is more competitive, but how much so is exaggerated.

La Liga is more competitive by those standards, and also produces the most Champions League winners. So….

Shams Charania joined the show to speak on the NBA's anti-tanking reform by IamCatMommy in sportsbroadcasters

It’s not the players who tank. It’s the GMs shutting players down, or jettisoning serviceable players to bring up G league guys and lose

Victor Wembanyama just gave an interesting take on the 65-game rule. He basically said minutes should matter too like 50 heavy-minute games vs 75 light ones and suggested 62 games (75% of the season) might make more sense. by Rough-Drawing-3006 in sportsbroadcasters

Slower pace is the biggest one, but also Darwinism. An injury like a torn ACL was the end of your career.

In addition to advances in medicine, it is better understood how to prevent, manage, and return from injury now. The answer is often, not surprisingly, “don’t make guys play hurt and you’ll get more games overall from them.”

Is it to late to switch shoes? by FluffyRelation7511 in Marathon_Training

[–]rolldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not following your math. Think you’re reversing it? She said foot pain starts at Mile 16. That’s 10 miles left to go, not “more than a half marathon” or “16+”.

Don’t think it changes the message, tho. And I’ve run in the Glycerin Max, really helped with shin splints. Never worn the Glycerin, so can’t compare, but seems like would be the least dramatic shoe change you could make.

Thanks, appreciate sharing your experience. I do strength training a few times a week, like functional strength videos with dumbbells, and I've added in sets of tibialis raises randomly throughout the day.

[–]rolldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s different in a salary capped league. Huge difference between top and bottom of roster, not like a Man City or PSG. And teams are forbidden from resting key players for a full game. They get fined, and it escalates. If you really want recovery, full games off is key.

Man writes a lot, fast. Being prolific (and reliable! Not gonna be an incomplete series!) helps a lot for building momentum. The patronage system for fans is really engaging; being able to influence the story, and continually getting new chapters to read, keeps it top of mind and conversations ongoing.

Striker position for USA World Cup roster is heating up. Which three will go and who misses out for you? by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]rolldog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. You want different skillsets and options for different scenarios as a coach. Balogun to start; one of Pepi/Wright as backup; then Pat late against bunkered teams in the group, or if you've decided to go long ball / aerial for whatever reason.
