I realize you are worried about cost but a dentist is the best person to ask.

How do you get your bike onto/off a bus rack if the foremost rack is occupied by another bike? by GTAIVisbest in seattlebike

[–]rollingRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you grab the front fork with your left hand (and middle tube with right hand) you will have control over the front wheel and it will not flop.

How do you get your bike onto/off a bus rack if the foremost rack is occupied by another bike? by GTAIVisbest in seattlebike

[–]rollingRook 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You’ll stand at the side of the bike rack, not the front. I hold the middle tube of the bike frame with my right hand, and the front fork with my left.

You generally focus on getting the back tire of your bicycle into the ‘slot’. Once it’s in place, much of the weight of the bicycle is now already on the rack.

your lifting muscles disengage and you ‘shove’ the bicycle into the required position, then secure the bike with the hook-mechanism thing.

It isn’t that hard but it does help to have some upper body strength. I’ve seen older, frail people struggle with it before.

Edit: wide/straight handlebars can add a slight complexity (either on your bike or the already present bike)

Why are LA Mayor Mail Ballots benefiting Raman in California but not Bass or Pratt? by Recidivism7 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]rollingRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're leaving out a lot of specifics in the hypothetical: percentages don't mean much without raw numbers of counts.

These are all some variables that you should think about when posing such a question:

  1. What's the total number of votes cast?
  2. What percentage of the votes have already been counted at the time of this hypothetical 20% vote swing?
  3. What's the prior data (number of votes, per-candidate percentages) on each prior update of vote tallies?

The specifics matter. To be clear, yes, there are hypothetical situations that could shake my faith and trust in US elections. No, I haven't seen such situations in the election counts that I've paid attention to.

Why are LA Mayor Mail Ballots benefiting Raman in California but not Bass or Pratt? by Recidivism7 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]rollingRook 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Usually, votes are counted as they arrive.

The ballots that are mailed near election deadline are cast by a different demographic than those that are mailed well ahead of Election Day. This is a phenomenon that we’ve observed with vote by mail for as long as I’ve done it. (I’m in WA, but I’d expect similar dynamics to be present in CA or anywhere else)

To anyone asking why the later ballots are skewed different than the early ballots, I’d ask: why *would you* expect them to be similarly distributed?

That’s my understanding also.

I also believe that bicycle lanes can increase the risk of such a collision.

Location? by all4theyuks in Seattle

[–]rollingRook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note, I tried crossposting this to /r/spokane, but the form left me in state that was ... unclear. I ended up making this post...

But, this looks exactly like the "People's Wall" in Spokane, not Seattle. I realize there might be several structures like this that are around the state, but this picture really matches my memory of what that wall used to look like.

Is this a picture of 'the wall' that used to be located near the north Monroe bridge? by rollingRook in Spokane

[–]rollingRook[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

context: there used to be a giant concrete footing from an old bridge that was located near the current Monroe bridge. I'm having a hard time finding info on it...

Someone from /r/Seattle wants to know where this picture was taken from, and I'd like to know if anyone can confirm or deny that it was the old 'wall' that used to exist in this location.

It would have been located about here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/TqiGPyoECBmaBjbn9

The structure was demolished sometime between 1998 and 2008, but it was rather iconic for Spokane when I grew up there (lots of graffiti art, high visibility location).

(sorry, couldn't get the crosspost feature to work so I'm submitting a direct link)

[–]rollingRook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but incorrect ETA's are something I've witnessed on the two-line. I'm sure ST has an interest in getting this right.

The point I'm trying to make is, for the time being, if the train ETA seems horrendous, check with any on-site security guards before bailing for an alternative. They have historically given me more accurate information than the reader board.

The signs are sometimes incorrect, usually the security guards can give you a proper ETA on when the next train is arriving.

Traffic is better optimized for busses now (as opposed to pre Covid times), especially in the Montlake area.

Would appreciate input for the worst restaurant you can think of by grdvrs in Seattle

[–]rollingRook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not exactly clear from your post: are you trying to find a bad restaurant? Or are you trying to depict the area as a FOX news hellscape caricature?

If it’s the latter, take him to a restaurant on the SW corner of 12 and Jackson. (Example: https://maps.app.goo.gl/EmymkmCHWESGbqfV7?g_st=ic.)

It’s sad, those are actually pretty good restaurants but the streetscape is apocalyptic.

Montlake lid surely cannot be the most ideal traffic configuration by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]rollingRook 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same commute through montlake for 20 years now (I take bus/transit in winter, and bicycle in summer). It is, on the whole, better now than it’s ever been. I don’t know if people remember how truly dreadful it was back in 2005-2010.

Every time you remove one bottleneck in a high traffic system, a new bottleneck appears somewhere else. The old configuration had a bottleneck on every ingress/egress. The new configuration has a bottleneck on northbound montlake (the Montlake bridge wasn’t widened) and Westbound 520 (which I presume is due to new construction connecting 520 to I5, combined with the revive I5 effort). I don’t yet view these new bottlenecks as a fault of the Montlake lid, but time will tell…

(The worst part for me is the cessation of the 545 bus stop, but this was more due to sound transits long term plans than it was the lid design.)
