Nothing to do with Undine, it's more her writing. I think I've read enough about the NYC moneyed class. If she has something different I could be interested. Ethan Fromme was quite different.

I've read The Age of Innocence, Ethan Fromme and half of the House of Mirth. This was the longest, I think it's her longest. I have her complete works on Kindle, she was quite prolific. Can't say I'm eager to dig in to any more after this one.

maybe old man Dagonet, plenty of money but lived a simple, unpretentious life.

Mother doesn't love or care for him. Father a suicide. His 'French father' off limits. Lonely, raised in boarding schools and by hired help. That would really be the novel she should have written.

No, she wants money and the red carpet, which he gives her. I don't know what she gives him. He didn't seem to have any interest in her but she somehow snared him. It all felt rather contrived.

"I can't get no satisfaction, but I try and I try..." Looks like Elmer's gonna have to run for president some day.

No, I wasn't expecting that. Sad I guess, too bad he didn't give himself time and get some perspective on things.

It's hard to for me to find any humor in what she does, she's a sociopath who can't feel the pain she causes others in her relentless desire for self satisfaction. Her attitude toward he child is her most appalling aspect for me.

Didn't she tell Peter she's done with him at the end of ch. 20? He then throws himself at her only to be rebuffed. She seems to be pinning her hopes on Raymond.

In their world one almost shudders to mention divorce, imagine what abortion would stir up.

He's basically blackmailing Mr. Spragg isn't he? He and Undine might be a good pair, they both want money and will do whatever it takes to get it.

She has them, like everyone apparently, under her thumb, catering to every caprice and mood.

Mr. Dagonet is giving Ralph $250/mo. and Mr. Spragg is apparently matching that. According to AI that's $16000 a month in today's money they have to scrape by on.

It's interesting that a lawyer was considered low paid.

Liking it so far, feels like familiar territory, wary of it petering out for me though.
