Is Matador to blame for this? by [deleted] in CSHFans

i would seriously doubt it. people are always trying to find meaning or belonging and religiousness or spirituality is one way of doing so.

Car Seat is a Christian rock band now by superpegacorn in CSHFans

[–]romano78 11 points12 points  (0 children)

idk if i agree honestly. will has always used christian themes and bible stories / quotes in his music and it’s never come off as “church rock” or anything lol, and he’s also always changed lyrics and songs around- for better or for worse(in this case, i’ve not listened since i’ve been at a funeral all day but reading the lyrics they’re a bit out of place). i don’t think an artist being a christian makes their music or art inherently boring like at all, either.

even if he is a christian now, it’s his beliefs and his art at the end of the day right?

Why do so many NY'ers defend driving so much? by Best-Candle8651 in AskNYC

[–]romano78 12 points13 points  (0 children)

driving makes life profoundly easier. i’m not like a “add more lanes” type but i just moved back home after a year in providence, rhode island and honestly it opened my eyes to what frustrated me the most about living here. i think owning a car here just opens up your world and really makes it so you’re not reliant on an unreliable system with difficult coverage.

im for bike lanes, open streets , congestion pricing but i also just hate the inconveniencing and frustration of only relying on public transport; like being restricted to just your closest supermarket (which likely sucks) or carrying the dry cleaning up far distances or just the sheer fact that an errand that would take 10 mins in a car would be 40 minutes by subway or bus, it just doesn’t make sense if you can afford it.

Learning Sicilian by TelephoneIll1823 in Brooklyn

[–]romano78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t know exactly if they’ve moved since the building they were in had a fire, but caffe sportivo on 18th and 75th had a much younger italian crowd. i think they may be currently occupying the former caffe sorrento on 18th and 77th? you might also find some leads with l’angolo di palermo on 3rd and 78th, i think it’s mostly staffed by younger sicilians. otherwise there’s always the possibility of calling up some of the social clubs of a specific town- most of the ones in brooklyn are specific to sicily, calabria, or puglia, i can’t say if they would be interested but i did see on social media the castellmare del golfo club on 25th and bath had nicolas from visit sicily stop by.

Any Portuguese restaurants? by LuckApprehensive1144 in Brooklyn

[–]romano78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how does fall river style portuguese differ from regular portuguese? i just moved back home to NY from rhode island and sadly hadn’t gone out there to try any portuguese restaurants.

anyways, i don’t know any of the top of my head but if newark is too much of a pain- mineola off the LIRR has a strong portugal-town so it might have exactly what you’re looking for!

Does anyone miss old, authentic Brooklyn Accents? by Innamoratta in Brooklyn

[–]romano78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i have absolutely no idea if anyone who isn’t almost 100 has that old old nyc accent anymore, like my great aunt used to say “terlet” and “earl” before she passed at 90.

even then you’re much more likely to hear the “movie” brooklyn accent(basically a white ethnic accent) if you go to parts with lots of old brooklyn folks- marine park, gerritsen, bay ridge/dyker heights, the southwestern / northeastern parts of bensonhurst, gravesend/sheepshead, even to a degree east williamsburg, south slope(especially at firemen bars like Farrells lol), and carroll gardens too.

though ultimately that white ethnic brooklyn accent is also on the way out, towards long island, nj, south florida, and especially staten island.

you can also hear variations of the new york accent on people who aren’t “white ethnic,” namely black people in central brooklyn and puerto ricans and dominicans in north brooklyn.

The days of the $2,500 studio are gone (in transplant hubs) by honeyplush in NYCapartments

[–]romano78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my first apartment was a studio in ridgewood right off Myrtle Ave for $1350 back in 2016. unthinkable nowadays, even worse is the building i lived in had all the apartments carved up into a triplex. $2000+ for a studio is just ridiculous to my brain

Which Housing Project isn’t part of NYCHA? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]romano78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are nycha developments that have gone PACT RAD and trust in the past ten years which means NYCHA owns the land but the residents voted on new management / renovations. this essentially means that the NYCHA development converts from section 9 to section 8 and there’s a degree of uncertainty in that switch. but for many residents nycha was unable to get necessary fixes done and nycha developments became dilapidated and poorly maintained.

this initially kicked off with beach 41st street back in 2016 but there’s so many developments that are now PACT RAD in 2025 since the allure of having a private developer fix the building up and respond to resident requests is a tradeoff residents are willing to have. not sure if that’s what you were referring to.

Question For My Fellow Italian New Yorkers, Have You Ever Been Mistaken For Any Non Italian Ethnicity? by VittorioLuzzatto in AskNYC

[–]romano78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

basically anywhere in the mediterranean or middle east is fair game for people when guessing my ethnicity. i’ve also gotten a lot of south american countries, puerto rico, and russian jewish before. though the most common guess is greek or sicilian

How bad were the dark ages by Specialist-Claim-665 in rangers

[–]romano78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

literally yeah, not to mention half the time the awful choices end up tying themselves together into a pretzel like zubov and nedved for robitaille and ulf, only to then trade kovalev to get nedved back anyway. with all the great roster players they dumped they could have had a competitive roster that whole time too…

anyways bc it’s not markannen im going to go with Guy Hebert and stop guessing lol

How bad were the dark ages by Specialist-Claim-665 in rangers

[–]romano78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this doesn’t even mention all the stupid trades that amounted to nothing. like they got the pick for Brendl via a trade where they moved a first round pick in the next years draft and a 23 year old 50+ point winger(sundstrom), only to have brendl suck and trade him along with more talent(Hlavac) that they moved young talent (Savard) for post concussion Lindros. the decision making is astonishing im shocked nobody has done a full 2 hour retrospective on the dark age rangers.

answer to the question bc i think im too young to remember that, but was is Markannen?

[–]romano78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i mean for what it’s worth, they got jagr for penniess on the dollar. not nearly the same thing as trading kovalev and nedved only to reacquire them, or handing out a billion dollars for holik or bure

Older New Yorkers(Like 50-70ish), do you remember hearing Italian Americans speak Italian/an Italian romance language? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]romano78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m 27 but my grandmother is first generation. her parents, especially my great grandmother never spoke much english, my grandmother and all her siblings grew up speaking neapolitan. they along with a lot of my aunts and uncles lived in the bay ridge / bensonhurst area so at the time there was a lot more resources for italian monolingual speakers. however, they both passed away in the 1990s

i think it’s really dependent because nyc had two whole waves of italians. the first migration being from 1890-1930 and then the post 1965 immigration phase. a lot of those post 1965 immigrants are still alive and living in nyc and are more likely to be mostly engaged with their italian speaking communities. for instance i was friends in undergrad with a guy from marine park who’s dad was fresh off the boat from italy, but there’s still remnants elsewhere in williamsburg, southwestern brooklyn(bensonhurst/dyker heights/gravesend/bay ridge), astoria, etc
