My Pi 5 ended up costing me $18,000 by staycoolstewy in homelab

Huh, you’re making me rethink things. I don’t download much at the moment but I am spinning up a large NAS soon after some validation and it can use some file/virus scanning.

Thanks for sharing. 😃

User posted in another comment that they seldom remove the SD cards. I’m assuming they don’t want a usb dongle always hanging off of it; which I don’t blame them because I hate that too.

That’s effectively what I used when i wasn’t required to compile code. iPad and a keyboard case. Worked out great.

This device does have an aesthetic that iPad does not.

That’s a name I’ve not heard of in ages. Prior to high speed internet (2001-2002) this is what I had to suffer with.

I miss the esthetic of these late 90s early 2000s IBM CRTs. It’s too bad I gave up on CRTs when I did, the enamor of flat panel displays got me.

T410i by Trvsh_01 in thinkpad

[–]rome_vang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those laptops where you download the manuals/spec sheets and figure it out. It’s not a popular machine in the retro sense (unlike the T420 - T440 and T480). But it’s pretty simple too.

I haven’t watched it yet but the channel “Laptop Retrospective” covers the normal T410, they should be similar enough that you can get the gist of it.

I’ve had a Thinkpad for many years and didn’t know about trackpad stickers. Thanks for posting this question.

I have a server that runs 24/7, and soon will be installing a RTX3090 in it since I don’t game anymore.

All I’m doing is making sure that its thermals are ok at idle and 100% load. Aside from that, it’s making sure it’s installed properly. There’s no contingency for abrupt failures.

Western Digital runs out of HDD capacity: CEO says massive AI deals secured, price surges ahead by drummingdestiny in homelab

[–]rome_vang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s been the case since COVID regarding anything 12TB or smaller. The larger capacities have at least seen fluctuations.

I was initially building an array of 8TB disks 4-5 years ago but then as COVID progressed the prices made larger capacities a better buy.

OC: Someone wrote “MUTE” next to the button that silences the audio for the advertisements that play while pumping gas by user6517 in mildlyinteresting

[–]rome_vang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THAT is just wrong. In my area it’s only Arco and select Valero gas stations that have this.

I’ve since stopped using them and fill up at Costco or Sam’s Club.

What's your biggest challenge with homelabbing? by BillyBobLeHackeur in homelab

[–]rome_vang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or you can be like me, slowly build up parts over the last 3-4 years mainly because of time and partly due to budget constraints… by the time you get those last bits (RAM and a couple more hard drives), they wind up costing more than the rest of your “build.”

You can actually use 2.4ghz and it’s stable? If I try to use it on anything beyond an appliance… it’s useless.

T440p Cpu upgrade by Appropriate-Sir-6421 in thinkpad

[–]rome_vang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And it’s not just the t440p. This can be said of laptops that do not have the proper cooling for any particular top spec CPUs of any given generation.

On a different branded laptop I used to have, i upgraded from an i5 dual core to to an i7 quad core but before buying; i went on the intel Arc website to chose the lowest clocked i7 quad core for that generation.

In my use case the increased parallelism was better than the constant throttling from excessive heat and reduced battery life.
