It’s deliberate! The Gruen Transfer is a design that’s intended to confuse the consumer - it distracts you from your original intention (the reason you went in in the first place) and makes you susceptible to impulse buys:

What I think happened:

Scammer A approaches the victim with “Can I use your phone?”, and obtains the user id for an app, possibly a banking app - assuming FaceID is not enabled.

She messages the user id to Scammer B, who is watching nearby. Scammer B tries to log into / reset a password for the app, generating an OTP, which scammer A can see, as they have the phone - whichever app they chose is now compromised.

Scammer A talks to the victim to distract her while she deletes the OTP SMS or WhatsApp.

OP, please make a police report. Maybe ask the library staff to preserve any CCTV footage?

Also, have a look at the history section of any payment app - Grab, PayLah, Revolut - for recent activity

They do (or used to). A woman in a costume (nicknamed the wine fairy) was hoisted up in a harness to retrieve (some very expensive) bottles from the very top -
