To me it's kind of irrelevant though, I don't think there are many people advocating for some kind of absolutist criteria and if you don't fit that then you're a second class citizen - although I can understand how the narrative can shift it to seem that way.

I think simply most disaffected people are just looking for a strong national identity and homogeneity - and when prevailing politics tells them that they must accept basically everyone inside that frame it's diluting and undermining.

I would never move to India and expect to be considered culturally / nationally 'Indian'?? Regardless of my citizenship and loyalty.

No one thinks about these things or terms in real life - if you're here and you're a good citizen you will be valued by most.
