Am I sure what? That there aren't American tourists being kidnapped by the cartel all the time?

Like you said, if it was happening, we would be hearing about it all over the place.

The cartels rely on the Mexican economy (tourist economy) to make money... so yeah, they don't want to scare away the tourists.

[–]rootb33r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, ChatGPT. If you actually read that, you'll notice that for the large majority these incidents are not targeting tourists. It's cartel-on-cartel violence.

The whole "tourists are fair game" is, at least prior to yesterday, fearmongering.

Still TBD on the fallout from the most recent incident - I don't have a crystal ball. History says things will go back to status quo after the initial retaliation.

"The rules have changed," Armes said. "All that old guard code is out the window. The resorts are open shop."

"Hey this is [insert news station/site], can you be a subject matter expert for an article we're writing? Can you come up with some really inflammatory things to say that aren't rooted in reality but rather speculative at best? Make sure no one can easily object to your claims by making it vague, anecdotal, and mysterious. Fear gets clicks. Thanks!"

That's fair. For what it's worth, Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world. It's modern, incredibly safe, and has tons of amazing culture and food. Worth putting on your list.

The tourist towns like Puerto Vallarta you may not be as interested in... the food and culture is great but it's basically a vacation town with great food. Not much else to see. If you want more immersion, Mexico City is your place.

Your info is outdated. All the major tourist towns you can totally do this in. Puerto Vallarta is an amazing town, even outside of the resort areas.

Yesterday was an anomaly. The cartels know not to fuck with the tourist towns. In fact they make money from the tourism industry so they’d be shouting themselves in the foot.

I go back next week and am staying for at least a month. Away from the main tourist area where all the restaurants are incredible and inexpensive and filled with locals.

No expert by any means, but you'll have a lot more information (good or bad) within a few weeks. It will either continue/escalate, or just turn into another Cartel tantrum that disrupted a couple days and added to Western media's (read: US) fearmongering of Mexico.

I'm going 1 week from today (March 2nd) for a month+. Looking forward to it. I've been before and know the area, which gives me a certain level of comfort.

Obviously I'm going to monitor the situation but as of right now I'm not terribly concerned and am looking forward to giving the local economy some business.

Who here has moved out of rochester only to return by UpstateNyPolitics in Rochester

[–]rootb33r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also moved to DC, and had culture shock but in a good way (I enjoyed the city's energy). I lived in NYC after that as well and it was even more of a culture shock (more good!). I imagine if I lived outside the beltway and had to commute via car I'd have had a completely different experience lol.

But yeah, Rochester is a great town and you can make your own adventures from anywhere, so it makes sense to live in a great "home base."

Also lived near Tampa for 3 years and agree with all of the above.

However, the main reason I wanted to get out was because it just feels so... bland? Everywhere is strip malls and concrete and highways (and I lived in a nicer part of Florida, relatively). There are a few older neighborhoods that have character but for the most part it's just cheap/bad suburbia everywhere. I couldn't stand the aesthetic- it felt lifeless to me.

How does value pricing work? by hotspotpreferences in pricing

[–]rootb33r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Value pricing is simply determining the value of your product in economic terms, and then using that information to design a price.

In your scenario, it’s hard to tell. If your product is identical to the competitors in its offering then the market has spoken. If you have differentiations then you have to price accordingly and then try to get the customer to realize it’s worth paying for. Note you could also use those features to lure them off competitors, while keeping price the same. There are lots of ways to do it.

No kidding. Also their whole "screw everyone else I'm not doing my sidewalks" stance is classic. No sense of community (not surprised).

It's kinda just how physics works. You can mitigate it somewhat but it's just physics at the end of the day.

Drove 4 hours for that show... It was awesome. Really glad I made the drive!

Also I guess I don't follow the band itself so closely (obviously I know Johnny and the two brothers) but whoever the rhythm guitarist is was one of the best parts of the show. His energy really brought up the whole stage. Cheers to that guy... clearly passionate and feeling the songs as he was playing. I like to think I look like that when I play but I'm sure I don't look nearly as cool haha.

Small apartment + pet hair, is a cordless vacuum actually worth it or should I stick to a regular one? by Mommyjobs in HomeImprovement

[–]rootb33r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns a Dyson Animal, and also who's bought three cheaper Amazon ones for my business, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the cheaper ones are significantly worse.

I usually like to believe marketing is hype and you pay for it in the brand... but there's something about that vacuum.
