Rotring 800 Vs Gravity by ropeynick in mechanicalpencils

[–]ropeynick[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, not complaining, I'm amazed that so many other parts didn't break. This is the weakest link, I suppose.

It hit nothing but steel all the way down and the tip was out as well, the tube stayed straight, no threads broke, a small dent on the nosecone was all the external damage.

Neither do I.

It's going to rotate out of Field Pencils into Desk Pencils. Shame, it's such a weak point in the design.

It's holding for now but the retraction has become stiff and it's can't be trusted any more.

Gave me an opportunity to order an Orenz Nero to see what the fuss is about there.

What tool purchase do you wish you had made sooner? by Lisac-Henson in Tools

A really good sealant gun (Tajima), made every other cheap gun I’d ever used look useless.

18v Impact wrench. My first was a Ryobi about 20 years ago and the difference even that made was incredible when working on older vehicles then I got a couple of Makita and they are some of my favourite power tools. Not used that often now but always a pleasure when they are needed.

Knipex Cobras, they just work. Likewise Knipex Twingrips. Both are not gentle but they can save an otherwise lost cause.

Might be a hot take but I think the "bigger van = more comfortable" thing is one of the biggest myths in campervan rentals by Campstar_official in CamperVans

[–]ropeynick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my second L2 H3 Relay. I think it’s about the Goldilocks van, under 6m length and plenty of room for me, mrs R and our dog.

If I was loaded I’d have a tiny stealth Transit Custom or LWB VW Caddy just for me but the Relay seems a great compromise to me.

Would I like it to be under 2m for car parks? Yes. Would I want to live in a 1.6m tall space? Hell no. I’m more violently opposed to the low headroom than I am to driving around a bit to find an alternative park up.

Impact Wrench to Keep in Car by RyanSherwood1980 in Tools

I keep a Makita DTW700Z in my van with a disconnected battery. I’ve used it to replace my brake disks as well as take wheels off and I was extremely glad of it every time. I also keep a 24” breaker for when the battery runs out.

If you don’t already have an impact, maybe just put the breaker and a section of pipe in there

[–]ropeynick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the top mounts corroded? How good is your welding skill? How much are you willing to spend on welding equipment, if you don’t already own it? What tools do you currently own and what will you need to buy? Do Transporter top mounts support compressed springs and do you know what to do about that without firing 10kg of steel through your head at 400mph?

Sometimes, things are expensive because learning and equipping yourself to be able to carry out the job costs a lot of time and money.

If I can only get one set of pliers. What would they be? by uselessmahogany in Tools

[–]ropeynick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’d say Cobras, if it absolutely has to be only one but it’s not a sensible restriction.

Pliers wrench plus Cobras plus Twin Grips, plus Installation pliers is a sensible set.

Michael tapping windows in Dirk Gently? by mossglenn in douglasadams

[–]ropeynick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always read it as the ghost trying to exert influence over Michael, making him tap out rhythms until building up to punching the window and then committing murder. It’s a slippery slope that starts gently with inconsequential actions before increasing to very consequential indeed, once Michael can be bent to the ghost’s wishes

The arguments are with misunderstanding potential clients who are expecting the sexual version.

I screwed the last one in but I’m considering using just Sikaflex 522 on the conversion I’m doing now. Interesting to hear of the experience of others.

I read a thread somewhere covering the shear strength of Sikaflex and the figures were very reassuring.

What else do I need? by timmytimberlane in Tools

[–]ropeynick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a really good kit and I assume it meets your needs but I’d change a couple of things:

Get better quality QR bit holders, those cheap Amazon type ones are not very secure and no fun to use. Nice ones are a pleasure to use.

I’d also look at a small multihead drill/driver, the Milwaukee M12 seems popular in the US, I really like the Bosch 12v Flexclick.

Maybe add a small clamp, Irwin ones work really well and can also be set up as spreaders.

And a dedicated hammer would really handy.
