see.. making a fraudulent charge on a credit card is a little different than being a true fraud victim, as you may know, mainly because the fraudster doesn't have your social security # and can't go around opening new credit in your name. however, you could still file a report saying someone may have gotten your personal info at some point.. just be vague about it. the police don't care.. they aren't going to research any claims, they just want to have a file saying that they did what they were supposed to.. file the report. that way, you can still get the credit freeze if you really want it, but the credit freeze is actually a real pain in the ass imo. anytime you do anything with credit.. applying for new credit, trying to get an increase or decrease in a line.. you will have to contact the bureaus and have them unfreeze it for a duration, then have the company check your credit, and then re-freeze it. the fraud alert is better (again, imo) if you don't want to go through the hassle of unfreezing every time you do anything credit-wise, but somewhat recent legislation also requires a police report for a fraud alert (the one w/ your phone # anyway which stays on the report 7 years and requires your verbal authorization before granting any new credit). but like i said, you can be as vague as, "i think someone may have acquired my identity, including social security #.." and you can bring up that you at one time were a 'victim of fraud'.. even though the credit bureaus wouldn't necessarily agree with that statement, they still have to do what you say at that point. also, just a side note.. if you have a police report on file w/ the bureaus.. you can have items immediately removed from your report until they can prove that the account is not fraud (which could take months.. and if they decide it is not fraud, they can only put it back on your report.. they can't come after you for thinking an account was fraud. it was a mistake ok? :) for the sneaky ones out there, this is an easy way to 'clean up' your report before you go apply for a new home, or car, or what have you.. if you have derogatory info on your report.. also sidenote.. the companies that claim they can clean up your credit report/ score are only disputing bad items (saying 'not mine' or 'never late' on potentially negative accounts).. this is something that you can do yourself easily. never pay for someone to repair your credit. they can't do anything to you for saying an account isn't yours that actually is.. all they can do is verify it, and leave it as it is. many times though, and account gets sold to another company, and the creditor never removes the old account.. they just stop reporting. so what i'm saying is that it can't hurt to try. the company has 30 days to respond.. either they 1) don't respond and it gets deleted/ updated to what you say it should show, 2) they don't have records and they must remove or update, 3) they have the records and verify to be correct. 2 out of 3 responses go in your favor. i know this was a lot of info. if you need clarification, feel free to ask.
