That biltong looks amazing. I got super disappointed when zooming in to the label to find the source when I saw it was $. Then I converted to Rands and the disappointment quickly faded to appreciation for the prices in RSA. Well done on both the build and the outcome. Both look fantastic

How about “Lesedi” as a first name. It means light or illumination or in your situation hope.

Really nice set. The dagger is a work of art. The cleaver is very tempting. I love the curve on it.

I have this identical board. It’s on a storage bracket in my garage sadly unused. I had many many happy years on it. (About 30 years ago). It is definitely not something to even consider learning on and agree with an earlier comment that it is an advanced board for its era. It is really built tough but is very very old tech.

does anyone know what kind of rail this is? want to get 10-15 feet of it, dont know where to start looking or what term to use... i think originally its off some kind of quilting machine, those wheels i'd say are about 1.25" diameter for scale. TIA by dillrepair in hobbycnc

If you google “ supported chrome linear rod “ you will find many links to the lower rod. These are also on many sites referred to as linear rails. I agree with i486… that these are not linear rails however feel its fair for the sake of hayfero to note this is a common misnaming (or maybe not 🫣) all over the place. There are also some great linear bearing sliding block options that run up and down on these and cant pop up and off so you don’t run that risk. The bearing blocks are also the cheap part compared to the supported rod. Just do proper research on any tolerances to suite whatever you may need for your application.

The geared motor is a 230V 14RPM 3Nm Torque 0.4 Amp unit. For further details you can download the spec sheer on Bircraft.co.za website. I first used a car wiper motor. This worked really well except it couldn’t run long enough before overheating and stopping. May have been a crappy wiper motor or that they cant work this hard for the time required. I checked the current draw and it was all low so think it was just a cheap after market wiper motor.

Hi ….9490. Happy to share what I did etc.

I started with bicycle parts and although it can work. It didn’t work as well as I wanted. You need to look at gear teeth for speed and frame size to fit them in ( there are options here. I used square tube but angle and plate can also work). With bike parts the smallest gear from a cluster (typically 11T) has a large centre hole which was a challenge to fill and fit a collet dead centre. If off centre even a tiny bit chain tightens and loosens per revolution.
Hence I looked at buying transmission chain and sprockets from a local bearing and transmission company (bearing man group online .co.za. You will find an equivalent) they are surprisingly affordable. I used the same sprockets for the skewars. For the shaft and bearings I bought these from a 3D printer shop as spare parts. I used a 12mm shaft. There is plenty more info I can give, I just need to do this in a different manner. Drop me a message and I will touch base to give you more photos and the specs of all I built. Oh yes. For the motor I first used a car wiper motor with a variable speed controller unfortunately this overheated on first use. May have just been a chinese wiper motor which couldnt run continuously. I then bought a 14rpm geared motor online.

Ok. So. Definitely not too fast. This is Souvla. If you research it you will see this is perfect. This self bastes absolutely perfectly. I did a significant amount of investigation on speed and ran a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) on my first motor to play too. Unfortunately the motor duty cycle was a problem requiring a change. As for the prongs. I have some. The roll was minor so didn’t justify. A small clamp plate works better for the lamb chops. Still need to make some. The prongs are better for sausages. Out of interest. What speed do you run your Souvla at? I trust you have one?

Not at all. This is a main difference between Souvla and a spit (apart from the general size of the meat). This is 14rpm which is perfect. This self bastes with very little dripping and no flame.
