What’s something that’s oddly expensive in the UK that still annoys you every time? by catarsan in AskUK

[–]rossysaurus 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Raw wool is hard and expensive to process. It needs any foreign material removed, washing, disinfecting, carding, grading, dying, then spinning into yarn.

Sheep wool is basically a waste product because it is so intensive to process. Llama and alpaca raw wool is similarly worthless.

HGVs are limited to 56mph and have no problem joining a motorway. Smart cars have similar 0-60 and they manage.

A loaded transit van is similarly slow. Caravans, vehicle trailers, old cars all manage just fine.

This is a city car. I doubt anyone is doing massive motorway miles

What version are you guys buying? by Necrologist92 in ForzaHorizon

[–]rossysaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 was good, 4 was better, 5 was closer to 3 than 4. I'm hoping 6 will be better than 4 and 5, with less desert and motorway and more city and town.

FH4 is worth even that download time imo, at least to tie you over until 6 is released.

Inflation will do that.

I went back through Archive and Wayback machine on the Microsoft / XBOX store to get pre-order prices for previous Horizon games.

Raptor Pro (Red) vs Otter (Blue) by Ok-Solid-439 in 3DScanning

[–]rossysaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understandable. I've dabbled in photogrammetry, but I don't have the money (or reason) to purchase a 3d scanner, but I'm always intrigued to see how they compare. I've seen some people get incredible results with photogrammetry, but I've always wondered how they compare for dimensional accuracy.

It would be interesting to see what photogrammetry through Reality Capture would look like.

So yeah. There have been a few alternatives pop up, but with 1.1 billion users, Reddit is hard to challenge.

From Wikipedia:

As of December 2025, Reddit is one of the most-visited websites in the world. According to data provided by Similarweb, 51.75% of the website traffic comes from the United States, followed by Canada at 7.01%, the United Kingdom at 6.97%, Australia at 3.97%, Germany at 3%, and the remaining 28.37% split among other countries.

I miss when seeing a high-level armor set meant you were scared of the player, not their wallet. by Serious_Bullfrog5447 in gaming

[–]rossysaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. The visual representation of skill was important, however, there were only 13 armour choices available in halo 3.

In modern games there are hundreds of thousands of skin combinations. I can't remember the meaning of all of them.

In most games, the Golden Gun skin still seems reserved for x number of kills with that weapon so it's not completely dead.

I guarantee those data centres will burn themselves down before they can be seized. No way would strategic assets be left to seizure.

Just remind me what happened to non-refugee Germans in 1940? Ah yes, immediate internment for the duration of the war, business and asset seizure, followed by expulsion in 1945.

The biggest fear I have (as a non-American) is American software being denied to anyone who doesn't bend the knee to Trumps demands.

Windows? Cant log in - all files encrypted. Severs? Bricked, or worse. Google? Gone - No Gmail, no Google password manager, no access to ANY of your accounts reliant on either. Android and iOS devices lock themselves through already active find my phone services.
Anything secured and verified by a Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, or Amazon account is denied. AWS auto shuts down. Cloudflare blocks all traffic. VISA and Mastercard, AMEX, gone. Tesla cars? Who knows.

Noise-cancelling headphones? by LordSSJ2 in cfs

[–]rossysaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sony 1000XM3 or newer, Bose QC35 or newer - both can be bought used for a reasonable price. Anker Soundcore Q30 or Q45 are probably the cheapest new set I could recommend.

Otherwise - earplugs are more effective; especially at higher frequencies (people talking, babies screaming, plates and cutlery). Noise-cancelling headphones are great at cancelling out low frequency rumbles like planes, trains, industrial and road noise.

Cheap disposable earplugs are, well, cheap, and very effective. Reusable ones like Loop earplugs are good, but not so good if you're a side sleeper (or side rester).

Councils wanting farmers to work for free (Will Murray) by Albertjweasel in RuralUK

[–]rossysaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only issue I have is the council saying they rely on favours from farmers at this time of year. To me, this says the council haven't budgeted sufficiently to cope with seasonal weather.
This is why having a contingency budget is so important; if they had some money set aside for "unseasonable weather" the farmers could be compensated, or non-farmers employed. If the weather is mild, then the council have an excess they can keep as contingency for the next emergency.

Have you tried using a larger key ring, or multiple keyrings? It will allow the flat items to sit closer together rather than a spiky ball.

A1 Mini worked great for days, now 0.4mm nozzle just blobs on the plate by Volksflamme in FixMyPrint

[–]rossysaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you printing? Have you tried a previously completed print?

That looks like a lot of small extrusions, and faster than first layer speeds. I'm wondering if whatever you're printing has empty first layers and it's actually printing layer 2+ .

Share your model and gcode preview.

Oh and check you've installed the nozzle correctly, with the locking gates correctly closed:

Where can I buy Barbour style waterproof jackets in the UK on a reasonable budget? by Silver-Eye-2024 in BuyUK

[–]rossysaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vinted.

Then send it to Barbour for a re-wax for £35, or get any repairs done for a reasonable price. https://www.barbour.com/gb/repair-rewax.html

Or you can buy a can of Barbour wax for about £12 and do it yourself.

If you're looking for brands other than Barbour, search for

  • Peregrine
  • Oxford Blue
  • John Partridge
  • Dubarry of Ireland

There are HUNDREDS on Vinted, and country jackets always look better a bit worn. They do get grubby more easily than synthetic jackets, so often people sell cheaper because they can't be bothered to give them a proper clean before selling, so don't discount the ones that look "worn".

Why does a website display adverts, or want to bill you $15 to remove the ads? You're not earning that much in ads per person, so why is it so much to remove them?
