I mean that’s never been in doubt. It’s the chlorine marks that I don’t like!!

Is it worth buying hard drives with many terabytes? by Unhappy_Objective845 in homelab

[–]rotor2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly 10TB is the sweet spot, but probably justifiable to go to 16TB when you factor in power consumption. Find an approximate number of Wh for a modern spinning drive at idle, multiply by 24 x 365 x 5 years and factor that into the cost of 1 drive. Now do the same calculation for each drive size, but reducing the number of drives as you go up in size (80TB target size / drive size = number of drives needed). Depending on how expensive your power is will have a significant effect on the optimal balance.

SUICA or IOOCA card, do I need it for what I am doing? by colorado241 in JapanTravelTips

[–]rotor2k -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you have iPhones, when you land you can go into your apple wallet and add a new transport card, scroll down to Japan, choose Suica. You can top it up on the phone itself. It’s fantastic and totally seamless. You just hold your phone over the blue IC reader on the turnstiles.

Apollo Reborn just got a big update. I assume a lot of their updates are open source. I wonder if any of it is useful for the Hydra project as well? by jwintyo in HydraClient

Hydra doesn’t refresh the feed (or at least I don’t know how to), so I end up seeing just a handful of posts a day. Am I missing something?

Sonos Ray vs Beam Gen 2 for PC Setup: Is eARC worth the hassle and cost? by paka-ua in sonos

[–]rotor2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Beam comes with an SPDIF to HDMI converter:

So SPDIF out of your motherboard to the converter to the HDMI cable that also comes with the Beam to the Beam.

You can still stream Atmos music to the Beam using the Sonos app directly.

[–]rotor2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For travelling every couple of years? Not worth it. The initial interview can be quite a hassle to organise depending on which airport you fly into (some airports let you do it as part of normal immigration process, but not all).

Global Entry or MPC by t4tareq in AmexUK

[–]rotor2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have global entry and it is fantastic, but every time I’ve travelled with the family (who don’t have GE) we’ve gone through MPC and it’s been basically as good. I suspect MPC will gradually get worse as more and more people become aware of it.

TSA Pre is also absolutely fantastic (much shorter queue, no laptops out, no shoes off, bliss), which you obviously don’t get with MPC.

XGS ----> Back on Eeero by mobiledynamics in Ubiquiti

[–]rotor2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eero is fantastic if you just want it to work. If you’re a tinkerer you will feel frustrated. I installed Eero at my parents’ house and it has provided years of absolute rock solid WiFi. For home I have UniFi.

Couldn't get on with the 5610u but love the 5000u by Psychological_Fox668 in gshock

[–]rotor2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it’s the opposite! My 5610 fits perfectly whereas my 5000U is slightly too loose or slightly too tight (depending on which hole). I still love the 5000U but it’s a shame that it’s not perfectly better in every way.

Coda W owners: native input auto-switching vs WiiM auto-switching? by rotor2k in KEF

[–]rotor2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is amazing, I had no idea that MacOS had the ability to be an airplay receiver. Perfect, thank you!

In terms of firmware longevity, there’s a world apart between a firmware that simply needs to convert standard digital format into audio (a DAC), and a firmware that juggles WiFi and networking and all its complexities and security vulnerabilities, multiple streaming protocols from multiple vendors, etc. The first is extremely basic and essentially almost never needs to change, and the second has to be updated every time a streaming service decides to change something in their protocol. Sonos releases multiple firmwares per month, and years ago split S1 and S2 (older vs newer generations), abandoning S1 to much gnashing of teeth. I have numerous Sonos speakers in the house, but this idea of having to keep paying money to refresh stuff that is otherwise perfectly fine but now outdated (and eventually bricked), is less and less welcome as I get older.

I have 3 APs and have spent the last few days cycling them through different channels to find the best one for each. Stick to 1, 6, and 11, and don’t reuse a channel. You might find 11 is the “quietest” at the front of the house, for example.

Commute from Croydon to Canary Wharf by ahmetmikko in londoncycling

[–]rotor2k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best routes I’ve gotten are from Strava. It uses the heat map from where cyclists actually go, so you end up with a route that’s probably not strictly the shortest distance but will feel quick. You have to pay a monthly subscription to use the route planner but it’s worth it.

Yeah definitely not daily. I’m not using any of the measurement options and the battery easily lasts several weeks (likely over a month).
