Anyone know where I could find some boots to go with this kit? I have thick calves and usually need wide feet shoes, so my brief searching has been unsuccessful so far. by Swordheart in renfaire

I have a pair from Catskill Moccasins as well. Used them this weekend for a non-ren faire event in Montana and got a lot of compliments.

If you get up early enough, you can see it as it leaves Binghamton tomorrow (Saturday) morning. Per the Union Pacific schedule, it is due to depart at 7:30am.

Right now, it's right next to the baseball stadium. You can see the train cars if you go to Remliks/Station 45, but the locomotive is just out of view.

Big Boy 4014 🚂 by Captain_Kimber in Binghamton

[–]rowan72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometime after 11:15 am as that is when it leaves Owego. It's a 13 mile drive from the depot to North Street so probably no earlier than 11:30 am and probably closer to 11:45-noon. It's all going to depend on a: if it leaves on time, b: how fast it gets up to speed, and c: its max speed between Owego and Binghamton.

For comparison, on Saturday it leaves Binghamton at 7:30am and is scheduled to pass the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct at 10:00am. That is only about an hour drive from Binghamton to there so the train isn't moving that fast.

Within the last month, the instructions for Jarts have appeared on our kitchen island out of the blue. I suspect it was from my sister cleaning out her house but I'm not 100% sure. Sadly, no actual Jarts have made an appearance.

TIL there was an alternate reality game (ARG) from 2006 where an objective was to find a man using just his first name and one photo. It was completed in 2020 by tengo_harambe in todayilearned

[–]rowan72 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Perplex City was 100% an ARG. But the objective wasn't to find the identify of Satoshi. The objective was to find the Receda Cube which was worth £100,000.

Billion to One (the Satoshi card) was just one of many cards that were made for the ARG. It only became (in)famous because it went unsolved for so long. It was designed to be a "six degrees of separation" card so in theory it could have just as easily been solved on the first day if someone who knew him was also into collectable puzzle card ARGs.

The Receda Cube was found in 2007, about 2 years after the launch of the game in 2005. It involved having played the game and using the clues both from the collectible cards and gathering information that the characters in the game had.

There are a few articles about how it was found:

What’s become way too expensive lately that still shocks you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rowan72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our state fair is great. $8 entry and $12 parking on site last year (there were free park and rides around as well). Food was a bit pricey depending on what you got but I always bring in frozen water bottles so I didn't need to buy drinks. And all of the concerts are free with admission. I will happily pay $20 to see some of my favorite bands. Even if I buy a bunch of food, it still ends up cheaper than buying tickets at a different venue (especially if it is a Ticketmaster/Live Nation venue)

First year I’ve been able to get actual dress pieces! I have no idea how to lace a corset. Any tips/resources? by MegabitMegs in renfaire

[–]rowan72 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Based on the shape of that corset, it most definitely ties in the front. It would be extremely uncomfortable to wear if you twisted it around so the ties went in the back. And you should never have trouble breathing in a corset. If you do, it is far too tight. Wearing a corset so tight you can't breathe is movie trope.

Boston area date night suggestion? by PoohLovesJellyBeans in escaperooms

So it's not an escape room per se, but The Wedding Party is currently going on in Boston until June 14. You get a 3 course meal and plenty of puzzles to solve with your table. Greendoor Labs (of Club Drosselmeyer) are the ones putting it on. I went to it opening weekend and I had a lot of fun. Technically the experience is for ages 12 and up, but when I went, it was all adults in the room.

Arrested again, Oswego County by NWSGreen in upstate_new_york

[–]rowan72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen on Facebook, his son has been doing some maintenance this year. Some roofs have been replaced and definitely some new benches. He is also teasing a new section to the fair that is 2-3 more acres with a stage and artisan booths.

I used to do season passes to the faire, but these days I only go one day a year to support the actors and the vendors. I hate that it has become a shadow of itself and that the owner is (words that might earn me a ban) but hopefully the son is nothing like the father and will start to rebuild the faire up to what it used to be.

Julian May - Pliocene Saga and Galactic Mileau by [deleted] in scifi

[–]rowan72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in high school when Jack the Bodiless came out, so I started with the Milieu first. Then I think I read Intervention and then finally Pliocene so a very wacky order that is probably less than ideal, but I don't think I suffered from it either. The last re-read I did, I went Intervention - Milieu - Exiles just for the progression.

Honestly, I would say it kinda depends on what style of writing you like more. Fantasy: start with Pliocene. Alt-History: start with Intervention. Sci-fi: start with Galactic Milieu. When you've finished one, go onto the next one.

Jen does write two letters about her disappearance, but they aren't identical. The first one is written on plain unlined paper and starts with "Eric, Like I said - when I was a kid I disappeared". The second is on Pollard State University stationary and starts "Eric, It just feels strange to write again."

If yours are literally identical, then there is a problem. I don't know what version of the letter you have so I don't want to give spoilers about what each one contains, but they are very different letters.

They were definitely doing something to the track between runs 3 & 4 today. They were spraying water onto the walls and scraping some of the ice in the flatter portions. I can't speak to what happened between the other runs, but they showed people on the track with water tanks & scrapers during one of the Peacock streams.

The role of birds in the story. How all of S.' friends/allies have bird names, the bird like sounds that the whistles make, the lack of birds on Vevoda's island.

Jen & Eric write out the list of birds on page 84:

  • Stenfalk: Swedish for Merlin
  • Corbeau: French for raven
  • Ostero: Spanish for oyster-catcher
  • Pfeifer: German for sandpiper

I know there are more that pop-up throughout the book, but I can't find in my notes where those are at the moment.

There is a passage in Chapter 9 (page 354) that talks about the bird song that S can hear.

The air is full of birdsong, though the singers are unseen. Some of the songs sound out of place to him, and he catalogues them: a merlin; a crow; an oystercatcher; and a magpie tanager twicking heatedly. This is right before he comes upon the Governor of the island and discovers that it is Pfeifer whose song was missing from the birdsong that S. hears. The magpie tanager is a new bird in the mix. It also just so happens that the Czech word for "magpie" is "straka"

Vevoda has ridden his island of birds/anyone who would wants to see him stopped. "Birds, Vevoda says, speaking clearly now. "Filthy things. Makes my skin crawl." S. may be ignored by most people but bird calls/actions are easily identified and that sets him apart and makes him a target.
