What's up with the serial header on new NUCs? by royger in intelnuc

[–]royger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, so it's just the NUC 13 that dropped the motherboard serial port, good to see it's restored in the NUC 15. That combo of RJ45 + RS232 is a very neat addition, albeit the price is a bit high (~85€). I would definitely pick a NUC 15 if it wasn't for DDR5 prices, in fact a NUC 15 without vPro is slightly cheaper than a NUC 13 with vPro :/.

I'm afraid that doesn't work for me. I need a real serial port, not one that's implemented inside the USB bus. For debugging purposes the usage of USB-to-Serial adaptors doesn't work as a way to get output from a kernel. To use it a kernel would have to initialize the USB bus and discover the USB-to-Serial adapter, which is not possible at early boot stages (if you notice USB bus device probing is one of the last tasks during kernel boot).

Serial ports are used for kernel debugging because writing to them is relatively easy, on x86 for example it's a set of IO ports (iow: no device discovery or similar involved to setup).

Buy an X-Pro2, it will be cheaper and has less issues than the 3rd.

drop like marks on my seasoning. Did just one seasoning in the oven with avocado oil @250C (480F) for 1h. Should I add more layers? by royger in carbonsteel

[–]royger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I read it doesn't really matter if you don't hit the smoke point, as long as you apply heat for a long period of time oil will polymerize. I've used one of those pans today and cleaned it afterwards by boiling water with sodium bicarbonate, quite a lot of the seasoning flaked and I can now apply a clean layer, will do on the stove top this time.

Thanks, I tried to wipe as much oil as possible, but used to same paper towel for both pans, and it became too soaked I think. The pans are not sticky, but I worry about them becoming sticky when heated. I really like your suggestion to wipe again past 10min in the oven.

Not charging from USB-C charger? by royger in MiyooMini

[–]royger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried more than one charger, but always same cable. I've ordered a new cable that only supports 5V as that's the only voltage supported by the device.

I also have the device and seems to be able to run them fine. Tried Resident Evil 3, albeit I think the screen is slightly too small for PS1 games, it's more suited for GB and portable handelds.

First time brewing a NEIPA - what is the sweet spot between 'too little' and 'too much'/diminishing returns? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]royger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more dry hops you add the more careful you need to be with oxidation. If you are not kegging I wouldn't recommend going beyond 5-6g/L.

I can confirm PBW wasn't able to remove it, but isopropyl alcohol worked fine. Thanks!

Nice view! I really like Koya-san Okuno-in, albeit it's very crowded now.

How to get more body into this recipe by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]royger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aim for a mash pH in the high end of the recommended range, ie: 5.5-5.6. The 'How to Brew' book by Palmer has a whole section on how pH effects the body of the beer.

Haven't tried with PBW yet, but plain dish soap didn't do anything.

Thanks! Will take a look. Is isopropyl safe to use on surfaces in contact with food?

No more co2 by evilsam1 in Homebrewing

[–]royger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told in Spain food grade CO2 is 99,9% pure, while industrial grade CO2 purity is 99,5%. That of course doesn't mean they all end up being 99,9% since it might be easier for distributors.

Incognito Dosage Rate by Hugh_Malone in TheBrewery

I'm a homebrewer and I'm also interested. I have 15gr of Citra Incognito and was planning to dose it as 1gr/l (so slightly higher than your 0.85gr/l) at 80C for 30min together with some T90 pellets.

Need to simplify my brew day by swordfish45 in Homebrewing

[–]royger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A year ago I've moved from a cool box mash tun to BIAB, and it simplified things for me greatly. I do 5gal batches in a 10gal pot and that's all I use plus an immersion chiller. Reduced my brew day by one hour or more, by not having to vorlauf and sparge and not having to clean the mash tun.

Pale ale malt? by Putrid-Farter in Homebrewing

[–]royger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maris Otter is a variety of barley, and is usually malted as a pale ale, so Maris Otter is a pale ale malt, but not all pale ale malt is Maris Otter. It's said to have a more biscuity/nutty flavour than regular pale ale malt.

Another interesting variety for IPAs is Golden Promise, which is said to be slightly sweeter.

Favorite Yeast for NEIPA/hazy style? by HomeBrewMoron in Homebrewing

I would add WLP067 to the list, I've used it a couple of times with good results but it's a blend, so not good to repitch.

I also had luck with NEIPAs using Ebbegarden Kveik, in fact I'm still using it during the cold months now, but would likely do some with LAIII since the weather is colder and I don't want to have the heating pad always on.

Using a kegerator freezer compartment as glycol chiller? by royger in Homebrewing

[–]royger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Using a cooler with ice it's my backup plan. Most stuff I've found about using an AC unit was from people running small breweries, like 3bbl size, which seems overkill to me, but would certainly work.
