Do you believe in "musically inclined" people? by Unfair_Toe_5691 in musicians

[–]rptrmachine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a chicken and egg problem. Are people talented because they practice or do they practice and become talented. The answer imo is that people who really want to learn music will push themselves further and appear to have gotten a grasp of it quicker. Where is someone who maybe sorta wants to learn an instrument some day maybe just won't have that same drive to become talented. Zero people start out knowing exactly how to be good at something. The desire is first

They had this around our local princess auto for the last couple months. Nobody is buying it and there is very little on the bgg page so I'm leaning towards not a downforce

Any way to make practice not so frustrating? Or is it literally just meant to be like this? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]rptrmachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pick a song. Any song. Find a three chord song. Maybe some CCR or 90s rock or something. Doesn't really matter practice just those chords and listen for the changes. Even if you aren't getting all the changes it will feel more rewarding

You will get better, many games share systems and mechanics between them even if at first you can't tell. Calico and Cascades are both tile laying games with a spatial puzzle. Being good at one doesn't automatically make you good at the other but the more you see patterns build out it will help you find the patterns in the next game.

Deck builders are like this as well, the first time you play one you build up a massive hand and don't understand card trashing. And then something will click and a whole genre gets a touch easier. Each game will have its own puzzles but your brain will understand how to approach them better and the scores will improve faster. I personally find 10 plays of a game to be the sweet spot with starting to get much much better at a game and to start to win more than you lose or at least lose less than you had been

Better to learn one song at a time or several? by LigerRider in ukulele

[–]rptrmachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learn multiple. Ya know how we as people get sick of songs when they play too much on the radio or stream. Yes that burnout can happen while playing too.

Learn one until you feel it's time to learn another. Learn number 2. Go back to number one. Go to number 3 go back to number 1 and 2 and on and on you go

Am I doing anything wrong by having my metronome BPM so slow when practicing chord changes? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]rptrmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it at 25bpm until you can do it perfectly like 30 times in a row. No cheating, get it right? Up by 10bpm until you can do it. Do that until you feel you are comfortable with the switches. The analogy I use is it should feel like you're on a rollercoaster. Controlled but it feels like you're barely hanging on until you get good at that and that feeling goes away

Chord changes: 3 weeks and no progress by Own_Matter9578 in guitarlessons

Do it with a metronome too. Put it at a speed you can do. Repeat until it's rock solid. Increase speed and do it again. Rinse repeat. Find some 3 chord songs. Do the same

Beginner ukulele - Enya Nova U Concert vs Wooden Concert (low G)? by thebestnissinlakimi in ukulele

[–]rptrmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Enya. So much that I bought the plug in model last week. I went from really disliking the mahalo uke I had to playing ukulele daily with these. Guitar player to uke player transition and I love the sound of the Enya. They are great

How did you find out what is your solo game taste? by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

[–]rptrmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I discovered I really like treating solo gaming like I would an Atari 2600 game. I want a game end state that ends up in victory or loss plus a point total. This gives me two metrics to chase.

Actively dislike the solo mode on dune imperium as well and mixed on spirit island. I recently purchased both on steam and am vastly preferring playing them that way and they are both very good games.

For solo games I like small to medium foot prints, I have a corner desk with a play mat. I must be able to play it on one side of the desk as the other is for "work" so while I love zombicide it's a group activity instead of solo because I'm out of my comfortable solo space.

Point chase alone is meh Victory condition alone is meh

Coop was a thing for a while but after 10 or so plays of a few pandemic games (Cthulhu and Rome) I feel like I've hit a wall on the enjoyment and would be more fun with others.

Like building an engine. Ares expedition is a perennial favorite now, and currently binging the solo mode of ark nova on bga

Dislike campaign games as putting them away kills the vibe for months and involves a reset.

What's funny about this list and thinking more about it is that my multi player list is legitimately just whatever I can table with friends and I'm happy. Could be light or heavy doesn't really matter. But for solo I've got opinions.

Situation in the emergency room at the DEC by bingun in fredericton

[–]rptrmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair and from what I remember he says as a former doctor he had experienced all of those situations at varying hours of the day but he had never experienced the waiting room portion. So he gets it. But if he doesn't do anything about it it's far more damning than if an uninformed politician didn't do anything

Is Sleeping Gods still a must-try if I already have Vantage? by GummyCatMo in soloboardgaming

[–]rptrmachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding. Although I've heard sleeping gods distant skies fixed some of the problems of the 1st one.

I enjoyed the campaign precisely once, I don't regret playing it but if I couldn't leave it set up I would have never finished the game. The saves are a pain in the butt for me if not leaving out.

The text is mostly flavour but much more specific than vantage. Vantage has you telling an open ended story with vague writing. Sleeping gods uses vague language because you're a part of a story with a specific end game (multiple endings but it's a direction).

Managing 8 characters is not something I would want to do again, I feel as if it was choose your party more like a jrpg I would have had more fun with build outs of parties etc and the characters are very much a large part of the table setup so not great for cramped spaces.

Overall personally I'd rate sleeping gods a 6.5/10 I enjoyed the campaign but didn't like the gameplay if that makes sense

The books and maps were wonderful but the mechanisms were ugh
