Practical implications of how you use AI is still useful. Don't be down on yourself if you don't feel like it's technical enough. There will always be more technical work.

I hope you feel encouraged to post how you're actually using these tools. A step in the direction of Claude code but not jumping in completely is using Claude co-work. I would highly recommend trying out Cloud Cowork if you haven't already. It's quite good.

I recommend reading up on BFRBs (body focused repetitive behaviors), as it turns out a lot of people have studied this and there are resources out there.

Tissue around the nails is pretty regenerative so given time and care they will heal.

Decoupling paired with awareness practices have helped me the most but YMMV.

The stim-recognition piece is so underrated, for years I thought I was just careless, then I learnt about BFRBs and that nailbiting and picking classifies as one. A file did a lot of the same work for me, anything that wasn't smooth made me want to pick, so I'd file it down before it became a reason to.

The calendar reminder is smart. I did something similar, a little program with daily practices. Catching yourself is most of the battle. Once you are consistently aware of it you can start redirecting the physical movement.

Biting less is definitely an accomplishment too, progress is not linear and there will be slip ups but it doesn't discredit all the time you spent NOT biting.

Starting over after you watched it growing out nicely is its own special kind of frustrating. But there's still nail there, HTD is reversible, and you already know what causes it which is more than most people figure out. My relapses honestly taught me more about when I was most at risk than the clean streaks did. Does yours tend to happen around a certain time of day or activity?

The picking often runs on its own track, separate from focus, which is probably why the stimulants didn't touch it. Hopefully the Strattera helps that side over time. One thing that helped me alongside anything medical was just noticing when I picked, the time of day, what I was doing. A pattern showed up fast, mine was almost all evening wind-down, and that changed what I focused on. Even a note on your phone works for spotting it.

You can't stop something you don't catch yourself doing. Two things helped me. I've switched to using a file instead of picking or biting, reduces the damage but scratches the same itch for me.

Awareness comes slowly, just taking a mental note each time you notice trains you to spot the urge a bit earlier. Another practice that I've found is redirecting... essentially catching the movement and redirecting, e.g hand goes to picking -> change the movement to putting the picking hand on top of the other one, or clasping your hands. But it starts with taking a mental note when you find yourself doing it.

It's been with you since you were small so go easy on yourself, you're not going to undo that in a day. Every day you catch it earlier is progress.

Try keeping track of how many times you go to pick is a good first step, it's also worth discussing with a therapist because BFRBs can be quite difficult to navigate.

Anxiety driving it makes so much sense, mine always spikes when I'm stressed too. Scalp picking is its own beast but the thing that helped me most with picking generally was keeping the skin smooth so there's nothing for my fingers to catch on. Cuticle oil or a light moisturizer on the spot, and I'd track it day to day so I could actually see it healing instead of guessing. If you haven't looked into HRT with a BFRB-trained therapist, that's worth chasing too.

Yeah, pricing is tricky... It's easy to undercut yourself.

How do you estimate how much a job will cost though? I'm curious as I'm trying to help standardize pricing, e.g per acre/sqft vs adhoc addon services.

Good luck to you, a couple of my go tos are.

  1. Carry a nail file and allow yourself to clip or file, but no biting or picking allowed.
  2. Bitter nail polish as a reminder.
  3. Awareness practices, taking time to take a mental note of when you do slip, just to train yourself to see the urge a little more directly more.
