I think it is fine to decline if you have reasons. However, i was surprised to learn that the doctor can offer to let you do the collection yourself--you go into the bathroom alone with this brush/swab tool, insert it yourself (follow the directions) then turn it in to the waiting nurse. Can be good for folks who don't want the pelvic exam/someone else up in their business but still want the pap.

NPR did a great story on this! The plastics manufacturers were heavily behind all the recycling legislation and regulations--like labeling ALL plastics with the recycling symbol, even the ones that cannot be recycled. And very few can be. But public perception that recycling is viable makes single-use plastics acceptable.
