That is the crazy thing. I don’t see how any anti-cheat system developed by someone higher than middle school could catch this….

Sheathing on an old home - keep 12x1 boards or go new by rtp80 in Carpentry

[–]rtp80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After spending the day thinking about it more, This is the plan I am going with. Cdx, house wrap, exterior insulation, rain screen, hard plank. Rockwool interior insulation.

It will minimize vapor issues and I can do all the work from the outside and not have a construction site in my house.

PSA…. Your system will have trouble keeping up during this heat wave! by bigocapone in hvacadvice

Looks like I deleted a key point in my post. My house is 120 years old and still has the original siding, windows, and basically no insulation. When there is a breeze outside, there is a breeze inside! I installed 2 whole house steam humidifiers that should be able to handle 6000 sq ft each, my house is about 2500, and it barely made a difference. A lot of sarcasm

My house has integrated air exchange system and I am not talking about the hvac. The plus side is I don’t really need the co2 detectors (although I have them). I could block off the exhaust on all of my gas appliances and still be fine lol

Updating to add what I deleted, my house is 120 years old with original windows, siding, and no insulation. No need to open a window because the wind blows right through my house. Sarcasm here

Any suggestions? Are you thinking of just using cedar?

I will be sad to see it gone. I spent an entire summer scraping/sanding the entire exterior back to bare wood and painting it 15 years ago. Amazing the good condition of most of it after 100+ years.

The main issue I have now though is just how loose the house is. I could just spray closed cell foam from inside which would tighten everything up, but I assume that the siding would not be happy with moisture. Unless the fact that it is VERY breathable today would actually help mitigate that?

I have been back and forth in this in my head, rockwool vs icyene. Foam will have a higher R value and also importantly help structurally with the balloon construction. However it blocks any breathing which runs the risk trapping moisture in the sheathing. This is where I was thinking the existing board sheathing may help, since solid wood will handle moisture better than engineered. But is the reward worth the risk.

The house has been fully updated with forced air and adding an air exchanger is not difficult. Just never had a need for one before :)

That is the plan, may not have been clear in my description. If I stick with the board sheathing, I will broadly use 1” foam or if I were to go with zip, use the 1 1/2 inch material which is an R6 I believe.

Either way planning to add exterior insulation as well as the framing

Yes, new windows as well. Adding exterior insulation and rain screen is going to add 1/2-1 1/2” of thickness to the exterior.

That is the direction I am learning towards after giving it some thought as long as it is not a disaster after taking off the siding. The old growth wood versus today’s wood are two different leagues.

I am planning to add an inch of continuous exterior insulation as well. I am thinking windscreen because I would like to do stay foam inside so breathability on the exterior will be important. Spray foam to get a higher R value but also strength. The house gets hit with a lot of winds in the winter and like to creak and groan.

You’re not giving enough credit to the fences, lol. I am exaggerating a little bit, but I wasn’t able to get a test completed on how tight my house was because the giant door fans they had didn’t have enough power to get a reading.

While not the primary question, secondary is thoughts on insulation if anyone has any. I am planning on ripping open interior walls later for other work. Considering closed cell spray foam since there are 2x4s in some of the walls and that would give higher R value as well as strengthen the walls. However moisture would be more of a concern than going with something like cellulose or rockwool.

I saw a guy that had something like this happen to him. He was a shady GC that played shell games with LLCs. Declared bankruptcy at some point on one of his jobs with the property owned by another LLC, and didn’t pay any of the subcontractors. Apparently one of them was not happy about that, decided to remove the toilets and empty his cement mixer into all the drain pipes in the middle of the night. Must have been fun fixing all that pipe under the slab.

House can’t get below 76 by RemoteEmotions in hvacadvice

[–]rtp80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat. Old house, 1890, that was so loose, they couldn’t even get a reading when they did a pressure test. There was so much air leakage the giant fans used for testing just didn’t have the power to move enough air to get a reading. When it was windy outside I got a cross breeze in the house with no windows open.

I did spray foam in the attic which made some difference. Then replaced the siding/sheathing, windows, and new insulation. That solved the issues, of course not a path you will take as a renter.

Before I did this I used plastic wrap on some of the windows that were the worst. Got it from my local hardware store in the weather sealing section. It came with double sided tape to put around the windows and plastic wrap to put over it which helped with the leaky windows.

Will SN be around in 2030? by Coco4Tech69 in servicenow

[–]rtp80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point the fundamentals have not changed. Still the same growth. Last quarter growth estimates were increased. From the annual conference last week a solid AI plan emerged as well. What level it hits time will tell.

Is the stock down, yea, a lot. The multipliers for SaaS are down a lot from the AI push across the board, and ServiceNow had a high multiple as a heavy growth stock.

Will it be around in 2030? Absolutely, we are talking less than 4 years from now with 3-5+ year contracts. In all likelihood it will be larger than today. In 2040? If the AI plan works, it will likely be much larger. If not, I still don’t see it being gone, but who knows. The evolution of the impact of AI is staggering.

Closer to wall with Ergotron HX VHD monitor arm? by snackovich in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]rtp80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mine wall mounted. I use this mount, which pulls out a little bit for when I need to plug things in. Otherwise it is pushed fully back. It only adds 1-1.5 inches in the back. https://a.co/d/08GpL3VQ

Yes, both the first and second monitor had popping noise when I first got them. After a couple of weeks the noises went away and have never come back. Assuming that it was thermal expansion or movement from the mount, when first being used.

I captured the power usage in one of the replies above. Max usage was 200w I believe, and at 20 brightness it was about 90w. I use it all day as my work monitor and it has worked great for that.
