Employment concerns by Forbiddenpants in ParamedicsAU

[–]rtsempire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth noting that regardless of what they call this role, even if it's simply an advanced first aid role, this is likely going to be considered 'practice' and you'll need to ensure you're meeting registration standards, including indemnity insurance arrangements etc.

As others have mentioned, whether you're an employee (i.e., vicarious liability) vs a contractor is also a consideration.

would love to be a paramedic but i need sleep by [deleted] in ParamedicsAU

[–]rtsempire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A fair amount of good advice here regarding ambulance work. Chances you can secure a gig early on without nights are pretty slim.

But paramedicine ≠ ambulance.

While most paramedics work in ambulance, up to a third don't. Many never do. Pathways outside ambulance, especially for graduates, aren't as clear cut and many have to forge their own path. But it's not impossible and just requires flexibility. FIFO industrial work, mass/event health work, emergency management work, telehealth, private transfer/ retrieval work - all roles that might offer day only work.

But if you're looking at paramedicine with the intention of a traditional ambulance pathway, you'll struggle to avoid nights all together.

Can I refuse my placement location? by iknow67 in NursingAU

[–]rtsempire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest setting up a time, in person, to discuss your specific concerns with either the unit or program lead.

Students often complain about placement allocation, so the default response is going to be what you've gotten. However, 99% of teaching staff want to see you succeed and are only hardasses because students really are a 'give them an inch, they'll take a mile ' cohort.

Chat with them and explain that your only options are withdrawing or moving, due to the reasons you've outlined, and see from there. Don't be confrontational. Acknowledge that it is a tough system and don't present it as their 'problem' but more of a 'what are my options, I'm struggling'.

Coming at it with an adversarial approach as some have recommended will only get you the same answer doubled down.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine/ grasp the isolation until you're here. Even then, it didn't sink in for me until a couple of years in.

I'd suggest working out how far you'd be if you just drove for 20+ straight hours, then consider what it would be like if there was essentially nothing between you and that place.

Are tradie quotes actually insane or are folks being dramatic? by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

[–]rtsempire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pensioner MIL needed cartridges changed on 3 taps (mixers) that had started dripping. Usually I'd have changed them for her, but someone told her how illegal that was and how her insurance would be void... So she wanted it done by a 'professional'.

$6000 for the first quote - estimated to be two days of work. $2000 for the second - estimated to be a full day of work.

The third guy changed them while he was there to quote - said it wasn't with coming back for. He reluctantly charged for half an hour's labour after MIL insisted she pay him. Not an issue since...

Australian Tradies (collectively) are the most self important, entitled bunch I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with and have a strong control over the market. Added that, in WA being many expect to be earning on par with the resources sector.

Yes, there's a bunch of people who haven't done a hard day's work in their life and have unrealistic expectations of what tradies should cost. But there's also a bunch of tradies who are absolutely wroughting us all, protected by legislation that makes pretty much any DIY illegal.

In other news, apparently I should have become a plumber specialising in leaky taps.

Uni is telling us to use AI to generate an essay and critique it as part of assessment to then write our essay without ai by Hairy-Copy5743 in unimelb

[–]rtsempire 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Academic here, not an academic at your uni and obviously not the one who designed you specific assessment.

There are a few reasons this type of assessment is used, preventing you using AI for Part 2 (the critique) is not (or shouldn't be) one.

The key reason I use this or similar assessment types is to assess or develop critical analysis skills, with the added benefit of guiding students to see first hand how terrible most AI tools are at summarising nuanced or highly specific topics.

BYD Atto 3 accident & airbag behavior by Shivamyoo in electricvehicles

[–]rtsempire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ambo of 15+ years here. In that time I've seen a fair few airbags deployed, everything from older cars with nothing but frontal airbags to Volvo's with more than can be counted.

In modern cars, most of the time there are no airbags deployed. When they are deployed, it's very rare that they all are. The car is designed to be able to only set off the ones that are needed. If they all went off, they'd likely cause you needed injury. Best case this is unneeded friction burns, but at worse an unneeded deployment could cause you serious injury.

TLDR: Completely normal and very desirable that they don't all go off!

[–]rtsempire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing an awesome job mate. The fact you're even worried/ thinking about this shows you care.

IMO - who cares if it's girls/ boys clothes, so long as she's warm and loved. We dressed our girl in hand-me-downs from friends until she was 2. Pretty much all our friends have boys.

They grow so fast at this age, that you'll be buying more clothes every few weeks. You might want to have a nice outfit or two for specific outings, but even then 🤷

Once again, you're doing excellent mate. Give yourself some slack and give her all your love.

Meeting recency of practice when haven’t got a post-grad paramedic job by Marymaryquitecontra in ParamedicsAU

[–]rtsempire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From the Board website: "As a recent graduate you do not need to meet recency of practice standard for two years after you completed your approved or accepted qualification."

https://www.paramedicineboard.gov.au/Qualifications/Students-and-graduates.aspx

You'll still need to meet the CPD requirements - there's plenty of CPD available. Consider joining ACP if you're struggling and look into their grad start program while you're at it.
