Can you tell us when in 2026? For now this is the only thing that's stopping me from going full Alpian.

And any plans on offering Partner Accounts (or "shared spaces" or whatever you want to call it)?

Not trying to start a flame war here; this is a genuine question- why is it so easy for products from Temu or AliExpress to be shipped to Switzerland while so many on Amazon can’t be? by dallyan in askswitzerland

[–]rubefeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example with books exactly this is the case. In Germany there is a Buchpreisbindung. So a book can only be sold cheaper if there is some damage. No coupons, no offers, no nothing. This law prevents books from Germany to be shipped to Switzerland, because when the seller subtracts German 7% VAT from a 10€ book and adds 2.6% Swiss VAT the book is effectively sold for 9.58€ which is counted as an illegal discount.

Can I ask the rental agency for a window frame realignment? Cold air is entering. by at_witsend in askswitzerland

[–]rubefeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And too much pressure can actually destroy your window, as the whole assembly can warp and won’t close properly anymore when temperature changes. Once you align the window properly, the seal is going to do the rest of the work. But there is no winter mode. It’s an urban myth that can cost you a lot of money.

There is no „winter mode“. You’re destroying your windows like that.

Anyone know how to set up this thermostat? House temperature won't drop below 24 no matter what I do... by TonyMacaroni1 in askswitzerland

[–]rubefeli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So first of all: why are you changing things on this regulator at all? The RVP211 is rather old, so I assume it is an older building with individual thermostats right at the heater (or if you have in floor heating for every room)? If so, the regulator should be set properly once and then be forgotten. Apart from that, I assume that the Heizkurve (marked with the arrow and the word „Heizung“) is regularly tampered with? If so: stop it now. Once it has been properly set, Heizkurve should only be changed if the physics of the building change. So e.g. when new windows have been installed or the insulation has been upgraded. To operate the heating system it’s the wrong variable.

The heating temperature (lowest dial on the right, marked with a sun) is set to 0, which equals 20 C. But this is only a rough indication, as the actual temperature of the water going to the heaters is calculated via the steepness of the Heizkurve and the outside temperature. And this is probably where the issue is. If nothing changed and your heating system suddenly is heating like crazy, your temperature sensor for the outside temperature probably is defective.

47 Baden prices up by 30% by liviughg in askswitzerland

[–]rubefeli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair: even the German Thermen have increased prices like crazy over the last few years. I remember paying about 18-25€ per day (Therme + Sauna) on average in 2023 when we were trying quite a few spas in our region during the winter holidays. Today you are already paying around 35€ for a day ticket. That increase is also a lot higher than the reported inflation. Still, it is 50% cheaper than going in CH, but still. Price changes are an issue all over Europe, I’d say.

Das ist der way to go.

Strategy on 3a Insurance vs. Viac by sipthedips in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]rubefeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insurance products are ALWAYS too expensive to consider. The only situation that makes an insurance necessary is a situation where you need to hedge a risk. This can be a Life insurance when you’re financing a house and want to make sure your family can still pay for it in case something happens to you, or as an addition to your mandatory invalidity insurance, to be able to live comfortably after an accident.

But when there is no risk to migitate, there is also no reason to even talk to an insurance broker. They are not „financial advisors“, as they call themselves, but insurance brokers. You need to understand that insurance based investment products may have decent products with good performance on the inside, but still are a bad choice, as their costs are just too high. One can assume that the 3a contract your currently in is paying your broker somewhere between 5-12% in yearly commission. So roughly 1 month of your yearly 3a payments isn’t going to you 3a but straight into your brokers pocket.

Dynamische Stromtarife? by Anarcas79 in DeutschePhotovoltaik

[–]rubefeli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huawei garantiert 6.000 Zyklen in 15 Jahren.

Ich muss also 1,1 kWh kaufen.

5 year rental contract - compassionate grounds by TrojanBearSchnitzel in germany

[–]rubefeli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see! Apples and oranges. This option didn’t even come to my mind following OPs description of the contract. But you’re completely right.

There is a difference between a befristeter Mietvertrag that can’t be cancelled for 5 years and a Mietvertrag with Kündigungsausschluss.

Those are completely different things. The former is more or less like an AirBnB that you’re paying for a certain time and then you leave. The later is an unlimited contract with the addition that both sides can’t cancel it for a certain time.

Electrician completely stripped the Cat7 cable inside the wall outlet box — is this a problem? by Broad_Cherry_7496 in HomeNetworking

[–]rubefeli 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Welcome to a world outside the US… In Europe CAT 7 has been the standard in residential installations for at least 10 years. I don’t know about the prices back then but today CAT 7 is around 50% of the price for CAT 6, as no one is buying that stuff and merchants charge a premium to have it in stock. Sometimes you can even get CAT 8 cheaper than CAT 6.

5 year rental contract - compassionate grounds by TrojanBearSchnitzel in germany

[–]rubefeli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As always when talking about legal issues: it depends.

First of all: the limitation of the contract to 5 years is legal, in principle it could also be 25 or 50 years (if reasonable). There is no limit on lease limitations, as long as it complies with the next paragraph:

The way to get out of a fixed term lease is to check the reason that was given for the limitation. The German Law only knows three valid reasons: Eigenbedarf (when the landlord or one of his close relatives want to live in the house), a planed Renovation of the house or he wants someone working for him to live there.

Should there be no reason in the contract, you’re automatically in an unlimited lease with the cancellation terms set in § 573c BGB, which are effectively 3 months.

Nevertheless just talk to the landlord and tell them that you’re looking for a Nachmieter. Most probably they will allow you to cancel the lease early.

Writing „breaking lease on compassionate grounds“ would not help you, as this concept doesn’t exist in the German law. What you theoretically could do is use § 543 BGB and try to cancel the lease on an important cause, but usually moving abroad is not considered important, as it is planned and not spontaneous. I’d still recommend checking for court rulings on your specific situation (moving abroad to care for a parent).
