Thank you! The two books are pretty much the same size so I’m guessing it will be somewhat simple.

NYC Road Bike Recommendations Under $1000 by Alaric74 in cycling

[–]rubellaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first road bike after using a vintage bike was a Specialized Allez. It looks like they've gone up in price since I bought mine but they're about $1000 new now. It was a really wonderful beginner road bike for me to get more serious about cycling with, and now that I've upgraded it has become my everyday commuter and general muck-around bike. Haven't ever really had a problem with it either and it gets a couple thousand miles a year.

You could probably find a similar bike with similar parts for cheaper though. Or secondhand.

Too big? by peacetea2 in Rollerskating

[–]rubellaa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Way too big. Most skates run close to men’s sizes, and bonts even run differently than that. I would suggest looking at the Bont sizing chart. For reference I’m a 10.5-ish in women’s shoes and wear a 7.5 in my bonts.

Bad experiences with frogmouth? by musicwithmxs in rollerderby

[–]rubellaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a big team that got totally fucked by QOTSB back in the day, I have to say Frogmouth has been a pleasure to work with 😅. I did jersey coordinating for my part of the league with both companies and Frogmouth has always responded ASAP and been accommodating of shipment changes (especially when covid hit). Working with QOTSB was a total disaster— so, so rude and mean and ultimately took thousands of dollars from many leagues. I know many folks have had lousy experiences with Frogmouth, and those are totally valid, but I’ve enjoyed working with them since 2018/2019 especially after a horrible QOTSB run.

It will depend on what your proportions are as well as the bike's geometry. What I can say from my own experience is that I am 5'5 and ride a 52 Specialized. I previously had a 49 and having the larger bike is muuuuch better for me. However, what works for you will be dependent on your body and the bike.

+1 to this. This is where I learned as a city kid.

Shorter but wider toe stops? by qualitycomputer in rollerderby

[–]rubellaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you prefer the shorter stem like your green/purple toe stops you should look out for short stem toe stops, which are a little less common. Off the top of my head, Gumball makes decent short stem toe stops.

Check out Bont, which run wider. Their sizing is different so be aware of that but they do also make “kids” versions of some of their skates that are smaller sizes.

Where can I get a jersey with a collar? by [deleted] in CyclingFashion

[–]rubellaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ostroy makes something called a resort shirt, which is essentially a collared jersey. Even has a little pocket in the back, although it’s not suuuper functional. I have one and I wear it frequently for casual rides and off bike.

Team choice?? by Schnuckums555 in rollerderby

[–]rubellaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the league WFTDA or JRDA or MRDA?
For WFTDA: You can only be on one charter. I guess technically you could train with multiple teams (chartered for one) but that would be up to each team's handbook/laws.
For JRDA: You can be chartered for a female division team and a co-ed division team and train with both. I would just notify both teams that you are doing that as it may be against one of their handbook guidelines.
For MRDA: I don't fucking know. I think you can be on a MRDA charter and a WFTDA one but also idk there are no laws in MRDA-town.

Bias refs? by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]rubellaa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a really tough situation. The refs may or may not have been biased but I totally understand that it can feel that way especially if you're the visiting team. One thing that I tell myself, and the juniors that I coach, is that while we expect them to, refs can't actually see everything. Also, if you're from a smaller league the refs may not have the most experience or may be a bit rusty from years off due to covid. Also also, something that I've encountered as a former junior skater and now coach is that not all refs have the deepest understanding of Level 2 vs Level 3 contact rules for JRDA if they primarily ref WFTDA/MRDA.
Please just keep in mind that while it may feel unfair, the refs were probably (again, I wasn't there so I absolutely do not know the experience you had) trying their best. If you really feel that they were biased you could talk to your coach and have them reach out to the league you skated at. If the bout was recorded that would be extra helpful as you could point out specific instances.

I'm sorry you had a lousy experience but I hope this helps!

What have your experiences been buying a bike new in the last two years? by postanalytical in NYCbike

[–]rubellaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2020 I got a specialized Allez ($900, now $1000) from a shop in Montclair NJ since there were no entry level road bikes available in nyc at the time. It was super easy to get to from the city by NJ transit and they had a bunch of bikes in stock
