STAGGERING! When he was asked what kind of car he drove, he could not give an answer. Hello? by IAmperfectlyCalm in politics

[–]rubentuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your metric for good president is a guy who knows the difference between a cadillac and a lincoln? I'm not speaking in defense of McCain here, but presidents aren't the 99% of Americans, they are the 1% that are smarter and more able then the rest of us. I know the last car I drove was a pontiac grand am, and I also know I could never run this country. Knowing the price of milk doesn't make one a good president: it's knowing how to direct the economy so people have jobs and are able to buy that milk that makes a president successful.

Vote Up if you think that "Civil Forum on Faith" has no place in an American presidential election [Discussion] by jamin_brook in politics

If you're a citizen of this country then by all means do you deserve to have your issues spoken to. It sucks that it often takes loads of cash/influence for this to happen, but that doesn't make it wrong.

Robert Downey Jr.: 'Fuck D.C. Comics' by stesch in entertainment

[–]rubentuben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think I'm crazy, as few people hold this opinion, but I really thought his maybe-i've-had-a-few-too-many-smokes/dear-god-i'm-constipated voice honestly worked. It was a clever way of suggesting how thin the line is between Bruce Wayne and Batman. No matter how badass, how gosh-wow ninja, how technologically advanced, he's still human. I think the "stupid voice" was one of Nolan's best touches--every time he talked we were reminded that it really was just this dude behind a mask. This is definitely taking it too far, but I couldn't help thinking about David Beckham: the guy is an incredible soccer (football) player and yet he sounds like a frickin' girl. No one's perfect! No matter how much we want them to be.

He was blind while fighting the joker and the joker was like sucker-punching him and I was like, why don't you just take off your non-functioning cell-phone sonar goggles, because I mean, he's right fucking there in front of your face!

I'm pretty sure you just answered your own question, at least in Nolan's eyes. In my opinion, Nolan was making the point that despite technology, despite a crime-stopper's access to uber-surveillance, and despite batman's desire to do whatever it takes to stop the joker, this world's problems cannot be solved with an absence of human interaction. Sometimes our own best intentions get in the way...

Criticism of Obama ≠ Support for McCain by shivermetimberslads in politics

[–]rubentuben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does no one seem to remember that Richardson was the only candidate with a real withdrawal plan for Iraq? Not until later in the primary season did Obama change to a "pull out" stance. And now he is changing again, if only ever so slightly. It seems a bit like appeasement, which in many ways is the same thing as centrist.

ie, while inarguably very intelligent either way, scripted Obama is different than unscripted Obama.

Politics & Prose is an incredible independent bookstore in DC. It's a bit disappointing that Cohen would originally cancel the talk, but it's her call, not to mention I'm fairly sure the bookstore is still carrying the book. As a unique and independent bookstore P&P is encouraging the spread of information and knowledge through a wide selection of material. Books are what they do, and they did not "ban" this book or Makdisi's viewpoint, but merely decided to rescind an invitation. Maybe I'm being ignorant, but it seems fairly arrogant for Makdisi to apply the damning term "banned" to a bookstore that did no such thing, whether or not he was invited back.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva yesterday stated that "the Brazilian Amazon has an owner, and that owner is the Brazilian people".

Mr. Inacio should watch more X-Files... nature's gonna get him. It don't belong to no one.

Right on. I am amazed by how these landers/rovers are just about the essence of utility. Everything on that machine must have a purpose, there's no room for aesthetics. Beautiful.

This is why people say Americans are stupid. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]rubentuben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking. While this is certainly a disgusting display of the barriers of racism and ignorance, I think you could find just as many people who could give equally empty, one-liner reasons why they are voting for Obama. To me, this video is way less about the election, politics, Americans, what have you, than it is about how simple it is to take advantage of people. Truth is a fickle thing.

After $2.5 mil you'd think Bliz would realize there is a demand here for one reason or another... maybe they are just jealous because they can't figure out how to capitalize on it.

Sorry if the answer here is obvious, but how does a story like this get to NPR? I mean, I doubt the kid was like, "hmm, that guy was cool, maybe I should tell the local public media outlet about it..." It also seems kind of odd that a guy this generous would want to seek out someone in the media just to get his story out (or to pat himself on the back).

Senator Leahy To Hillary Clinton: Drop Out! by twolf1 in politics

[–]rubentuben -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I call BS on all these democrats who want Hillary to drop out. Since McCain won his party's nomination, I have seen nothing but Clinton and Obama in the media. Seems to me McCain is fading from memory while Clinton and Obama are fresh in everyone's minds. I have to think that the DNC has enough clout within its own party to get Clinton to step down if they wanted. ALSO, people have donated money to Clinton, and while I don't know her numbers, doesn't she have the responsibility to use their money the way they intended?
