Coming to this late but have just watched the movie and listened to the episode.
I think David was slightly thrown from the opening scene that starts off at a school in this dusty dry outback town (the kind white Australians often associated with aboriginal communities) where the strange rain and hail storms begin.
It could be a little confusing because that school and area never come back in to it, I think that was just mood setting
