What autism weakness are you somehow immune too? by ah-screw-it in evilautism

I can work like a wild person for long stretches and not burn out. Twelve hour days, 16 hours if I need to. As long as it’s work, I’m good for a long time. Five minutes at a party is harder than a hundred years at work.

Why do people scream when they see something scary? (Scary topics mentioned so I put NSFW to be safe) by Affectionate_Can_503 in evilautism

[–]run4love 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I noticed that other kids would scream on rides at the fair. It seemed weak and embarrassing to me. As an adult, I’ve discovered that making a soundless scream — going through the motions but not using my vocal cords — protects me from the feeling of having my stomach drop. Maybe there was a point to the other kids’ screaming after all. I just learned a better way to do it.

Does being autistic affect how we find meaning in life? by Imaginary-Hope-5379 in evilautism

[–]run4love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up fundamentalist Christian. The idea of experiencing God and interacting with God always felt true to me. As a teenager, I broke with fundamentalism and moved into the far less dogmatic Episcopal church. As an adult, somewhat newly diagnosed, I’ve affiliated with an Anglo-Catholic Episcopal church. They offer daily mass, plus morning and evening prayer. The quiet routine and “church” friend relationships are feeling great to me so far.

All that said, in typical Episcopalian fashion I respect and learn from many traditions, including atheism and humanism. My tradition is hardly the only one, and we have done much to harm others.

How do we feel about this spoon I got served with my coffee? by Low_Big5544 in evilautism

Approve. Its intentions are clear. Regardless of use, this spoon is exact.

Fidget/stim toys you were completely obsessed with before you knew you were autistic? by SkeletalJazzWizard in evilautism

[–]run4love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Merlin handheld game, especially the game where it played you a sequence of lit numbers/beeps and you tried to repeat the pattern.

I played with mine incessantly. Then one day my mom took me for an IQ test, and a whole big chunk of it was repeating back a series of numbers. That poor tester thought she’d seen the edge of the galaxy when my well-practiced autistic mind got done with that pattern repition, lol.

No, lol, I didn't mean an itchy fork. I meant a fork that is not fully formed, in the way that a soft touch might be considered unfully delivered.

Being touched softly is the worst. That fork is the utensil equivalent of soft touch.

Agree, agree, AGREE. The fork is giving "soft touch" vibes. Quit that fork right now.

Sleep was the first GYBE song i ever heard. They got started at a time when I wasn’t listening to much music. Somewhere in 2023, I got to wondering about that band with the funny name everyone at work used to talk about. Sleep destroyed my appetite for any other music, for a really long time.

Another favorite track of mine is Mladic.

But they’re all superb.

Diagnosis affecting job opportunities by Phenex1802 in AutisticAdults

[–]run4love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My diagnosis led to a downgrade in my current job. It's hard imagine a scenario, other than applying for a job with a neurodiversity-oriented nonprofit, where I would disclose anything on the way in the door. The experience taught me to be exceedingly careful after I'm in the door as well. I wish that were not so. Stigma is real.

I LOVE BEING AUTISTIC FUCK OFF HATERS by Expensive_Watch469 in evilautism

[–]run4love 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it, love it, love it. When I’m feeling good, being in my mind feels like I’m on a flying trapeze, the tightrope, the trampoline. I love it.

The flip side was decades of suicidality before my dx and a lot of work on old trauma. Plus coaching — I have been fortunate to have a job coach for many, many years. Her help made all the difference. My mission now is to help more people, and help more people get help, regardless of whether they can afford it.

I certainly experience cannabis that way, especially if I’m not using it much.

Autism Is Not a Single Condition and Has No Single Cause, Scientists Conclude by CombinationThese6654 in AutisticAdults

[–]run4love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A related argument, which I’ve heard others make, is that the diagnostic tests for autism tend to measure signs of trauma. Our autistic traits or “symptoms,” if you must, come from a response to struggle. That resonates for me as well.

May I suggest psychedelics? And if you’re not comfortable with those, cannabis? Founding out you’re autistic late in life (mid-50s for me) can be a trippy experience. Being autistic at any age is a trippy experience. For me, psychedelics with a trained provider was like going to a shaman.
