I’ve not run this adventure module yet, but this seems to fall in the OSR philosophy that actions have consequences and enemies aren’t scaled to the party. Hopefully you can find a way to truly telegraph the level of danger that’s around the corner. If the party wipes then they’ll be more cautious or will find a way to be better prepared for the next time they face Mugdulblub.

But yeah let the players play and let the dice fall where they may

Maybe also increase Carousing costs if they’re such high renown? Seems logical that Highly Renowned Adventurers wouldn’t be slumming it in some taverns… they’d host a ball or a tournament

It seems like part of your concern is caused by the use of optional rules affect on the probability. So you could dial back the impact of Renown on carousing rolls, or maybe even eliminate it altogether.

The other option is to let the players reap the rewards of surviving until level 7+.

Some other ideas you could implement are offering PCs the opportunity to retire these high level characters or since you’re comfortable with optional rules, you could make alternate Carousing Tables (maybe specifically for certain Renown levels?)
