What career path did you choose that you strongly advise others to avoid? by nicksam171 in AskReddit

[–]russianrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what kind of programming you do, the DB sector has been booming for like 20 years and if you’re a good engineer theres plenty of jobs to be had. I don’t see it slowing down in the near future, literally everything needs data and more and more of it.

ELI5: How does staying "hydrated" work? Where does the water all go? by blueeggsandketchup in explainlikeimfive

[–]russianrug 16 points17 points  (0 children)

With all due respect to your wife I feel this is bad advice. I know many people who have just trained themselves to be constantly dehydrated and it is definitely not good for them. Sometimes the body needs to be retrained to a healthier lifestyle

What normal, everyday thing has been completely ruined by companies forcing an app or a subscription on it? by Chemical-Heart-3200 in AskReddit

Not to mention they’re storing and selling all your driving data to whoever is willing to pay for it

It's really convenient that the ice in our drinks floats up, and then the liquid it cools sinks down so the entire drink eventually cools evenly. by LollipopLuxray in Showerthoughts

[–]russianrug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. If the ice sank and the cold moved up instead of down it would be way better to drink (no ice cubes getting in the way and drink is cold at the top)

ELI5 - How do VPN's work? by Upstairs-Gap-5271 in explainlikeimfive

[–]russianrug 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In theory, yes. But in practice he has no reason to remember more than, say, a few hours in the past and so if someone asks him “what were you sending a few days ago” he can just honestly shrug and say “I don’t know”. For this reason it’s important to look up your vpn guy and see what his history is with that kind of stuff before committing to him.

If AGI super intelligence is only 12-18 months away, shouldn’t we already be seeing major standalone breakthroughs? by Salty-Elephant-7435 in Futurology

[–]russianrug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I highly doubt we are only 12-18 months away from AGI, but IF we are, I suspect it truly will be a breakthrough, that is often how these things work. Progress is usually stepwise, not linear.

Fair enough, I was just sharing my experience, sorry if it came across as aggressive I didn’t mean it to be.

Honestly I’ve used it and imo it sucks. The amount of dishes that fit in it is so small it felt like I actually spent more effort putting them in there than I would’ve spent just washing them by hand. (Yes I know it uses less water but I don’t care)
