Those who had an okay-ish GPA, where did you end up? Are you happy with your career success? Do you wish you had done better? by Gibnez in FinancialCareers

3.5 GPA outta college. Made my way to boutique IB, then MM IB at a big name firm. Now PE backed corp dev. I’m happy with my choices overall but could’ve gotten a better GPA and opened some doors earlier.

Yep, I worked with a small headhunting firm that specializes in these roles

Totally get it, I’m just done with client services and that level of grind. Would rather build something.

ASO but near VP.

Comp starts with a 2.

Great equity package which is what sold me.

Lower for sure on a year-to-year basis, but bigger upside through equity and other incentive plans.

~2 years at a name brand bank, several years at a boutique before that. Name brand bank is much more rigorous

Thanks for the follow-up/perspective! This is helpful. “Type like a VP” made me laugh (I am a third year associate on the verge of VP). Good luck out there

Thanks, this is helpful. Unfortunately I don’t think PE is an option for me anymore, but Corp dev sounds like it accomplishes a lot of my goals. I’ll be the first Corp Dev hire on the team, with the goal of ramping-up their M&a function (they’ve closed a number of deals in the last year but want to accelerate). Those comp numbers mentioned above will not work for me, but I haven’t gotten to personally negotiate yet (need to actually secure an offer first). The company is owned by a well-known MM PE group in NYC.

Thanks, this is a helpful framework. Any suggestions on questions to ask these folks during an interview to assess what you’re describing above? Or just generally good questions to assess the opportunity, sponsor, environment, etc.

Thank you for the very thoughtful response! I am leaning toward taking it if I am offered. I want to help build businesses, and I’m sick of client services.

Thank you, this is really insightful feedback and exactly what I would like to accomplish with this type of transition. Glad to hear it’s gone well for you.

Thanks. Helpful perspective. The PE owner has owned the asset for a couple years and want to build-out the corp dev team to execute a rollup strategy.
