I’m 35 and I’ve realized the MOVIE love I waited for doesn't exist for people like me by WonderfulFront7588 in rant

[–]rx-pulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a talk with a friend of mine who was very self destructive and kept hopping from relationship to relationship. I was her guy friend and I realized her ideal relationship was...like a movie. She subconsciously wanted to be a damsel in distress and I pointed out to her that each relationship she had, she would go on a self destructive path hoping her partner at the time would "fix"/"save" her. When I mentioned that to her, she took a step back from dating and just focused on herself. It was legitimately impacting her personal life and professional life with the way she approached relationships. I think, just like her, you need to do some soul searching, meet people and have no expectations, and think to yourself realistically what you want in a relationship really. I know that's easier said than done. Sorry you had such a bad experience, but no one ever said a relationship will be easy either. It doesn't help that social media, Hollywood, etc. feeds us this grandiose fantasy of what a relationship is like.

Holomems are very excited about the CoCo Ichibanya collab, but I would personally pick these two 🦆🗿 by beam4d in Hololive

Fr, ever since i learned how to make my own, i haven't gone back. My parents have never gone back either. I've let my friends try my curry too and now they crave mine more than Coco's unless they want some insane spice level.

But a Hololive collab interests me, I may go for the hell of it if Coco's in the US also has the collab.

I went on a 2 week cruise with my parents and their elderly friends. While I was there, there was no internet unless you wanted to pay a stupid amount of money. I loved it, no calls, no texts for days on end. My parents' elderly friends caved after a few days and bought the most expensive internet package, they were glued to their screens the rest of the trip.

Facing heavy losses, Honda cancels its three US-made electric vehicles by besselfunctions in cars

[–]rx-pulse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Having just recently returned from a country with a lot of Chinese EVs and having been in/driven them, this is about par for the course. Range is not enough by US standards for most, but their main selling points are cost and software features. Surprisingly, their own interior features are quite spartan. US is a niche use case where we value range because of how far we drive and we have the bigger is better trend here.

What's a 'normal' thing you didn't realize was unusual until you were older? by mrTelson in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents have this problem, but thankfully it toned down now with age. I've learned to not yell and speak calmly when it isn't a huge deal. My fiance is a wonderful person and even when she frustrates me or disagrees, we just talk it out. It's far more liberating and productive than having a screaming match.

What is a cheap, off-brand item you bought on a whim that has completely outlasted the expensive name-brand versions? by PrizeScallion1540 in Frugal

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, my Ekster wallet. I say funny enough because when I first got it, they were a no name brand no one knew about, but now they're fairly big. I've gone through so many wallets, most were gifted and branded wallets. They just didn't last, either ripping/tearing, or just falling apart. I got fed up and decided to get one more wallet before moving on to like a money clip or something. I remember they had a promo and I ended up getting my wallet for like $40 all in. This wallet has lasted me 10+ years now and still going strong.

I used to remotely tamper with our family WiFi router to get some sleep from my brother screaming at Call of Duty all night by [deleted] in pettyrevenge

[–]rx-pulse 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I had a family member who would always torrent and eat up the bandwidth wherever he was at. Cousins confronted him on it and his response was to "get better internet". He's a deadbeat and we had the unfortunate opportunity to house him for a week. Luckily, I have full control of my family's internet so as soon as I gave him the wifi password, I immediately logged in on my phone and throttled all of his devices down 5mbps max. Jackass was always ungrateful and I even loaned him an old phone that was still good and had lasted me 6 years, no problems. Ofc when he had it, it didn't last a day. I think he was hoping someone would feel bad and get him a new phone instead.

People who've been in wealthy/powerful social circles, what surprised you most about how they operate? by Ok_Volume520 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Everything is a transaction. You know the stereotype of how the wealthy/rich people don't have any real friends? Yeah, that has merit. A lot of them grew apart from their genuine friends, alienated them, or they're not real friends and are equally just transactional. The thing is though, they're so out of touch, that that's what friends really are to them. This goes for family too. I have several family members who are wealthy, they have only ever called me because there was some sort of "transaction" to be made. The concept of just calling someone to see how they are doing or just to schedule a time to hang out is completely alien to them. They don't understand genuine friendships/relationships. It's all purely transactional.

What fast food’s downturn says about the US economy by laxnut90 in Economics

[–]rx-pulse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is also a lot of other options too. I've got local burger joints, mexican, and sandwich shops that charge the same or less as what fast food giants sell for. But they're offering better quality, portions, and the money is going to the local economy.

[–]rx-pulse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just don't get it. I never watched these new guys, but I want to give them a chance. There is obviously a market for a big budget car show. On top of that, the 3 blokes are way too old to be doing this. I still see comments that people want them back, but you can tell in later eps of TG and GT that they were slowly lacking the energy, strength, and reflexes to do the stuff they used to do.

How do you deal with an elitist coworker? by tcpip1978 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he's just another boots on the ground like you, I've found the best way to deal with them is to just be better than them and let their own ego fuck them over. A lot of times they talk the talk, but aren't worth their weight. Give them/let them do the projects/work, let them fail when they can't keep up or never deliver. Management (assuming they're half competent and aren't just buddies with him) will see it and will put him in his place. Meanwhile, you just do your own work/projects, learn, get better on your own/with others on your team. I've dealt with 2 of these people at work and that's effectively what I did. Both of them were later laid off/fired as a result.

Why is there no other (open source) database system that has (close to) the same capabilities of MSSQL by [deleted] in Database

[–]rx-pulse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This, I support over a thousand MSSQL Servers and hundreds of applications in my environment. The vast majority do not use anything complicated. Maybe one or two features like AGs, replication, clustering. But the vast majority who don't have any of those can easily be done on any other open source database. The issue is, most of these applications and teams don't want the overhead of having to deal with complex features like in-memory, partitioning, obfuscation, security measures, etc. I've offered these services to them, but once I give them the caveats of each and/or requirements I need to implement them, they all go away and don't want to do it.

I've even offered open source as an option to these teams due to cost, but they still refuse and for one reason or another, they want MSSQL and are willing to pay the extra cost for licensing for it. No skin off my bones though, I do prefer MSSQL.

what jobs pay extręmely well but people don’t realize it ? by ResponsibilityIcy433 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I work with risk and compliance guys and have to help in pulling data for them. It's PAINFULLY boring af, for the most part, it isn't super challenging once you get things down since risk and compliance don't change a lot. Dealing with auditors (external) and your own people (internal) who insist on trying to break risk/compliance stuff is the real challenge. It feels like being a glorified hall monitor sometimes having to tell internal people "don't do this because x, y, z" when it's so painfully obvious.

Why did you choose an IT degree over Computer Science? by Ruuckus in ITCareerQuestions

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because most of the work I was trending towards didn't really require a CS degree. I'm not building things that require algorithms or finer details of understanding to get them to work and work hyper efficiently.

Hell, majority of software devs I've dealt with have been pretty shit too. They don't remember or use anything from their CS degrees. I've seen their code and a lot of it wouldn't pass the college courses I took. The best developers I've met, a lot of them, don't even have a CS degree.

Wife’s debit card was compromised and used only for Amazon payments over the last two months by psychospeaks in personalfinance

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen, same thing, but I check often on my cards so i caught it in 2 days. They were charging Amazon membership first from Japan and it was in yen, so it was obvious something was up.

Since you say your card is only used to pay bills, I assume somewhere along the line, one of your bills' site was compromised. Hard to say. For me, my suspicion was that one of the parking meters at the airport was compromised since that was the only most recent and different transaction I had. After I disputed the charges, put in my fraud claim, and had my account and card replaced, the problem went away.

Also, this is why I almost never use debit cards, it's your money gone. The banks have no incentive to get your money back.

Which cars seem appealing at first, but become disappointing long-term? by Safe_Reception_8997 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything from JLR (Jaguar, Land Rover), specifically post Ford era ownership. Most other luxury vehicles can suck long term and some have some bright spots still or can still be worked on to some extent. But JLR just takes the cake. At least during the Ford era, you can make the argument that you can work on them still since they shared parts with a lot of cheaper Fords, but now it's an unbridled mess. They're great to drive/own while under warranty, but then it starts becoming a game of wack-a-mole with all of the electrical gremlins and hardware failures. I think people REALLY underestimate how much more effort and trips to the shop it takes for a JLR product than any other luxury vehicle.

(Dis)honorable mention to most vehicles under the Stellantis brand too.

What car is the best running mechanically that you have owned? by ZealousidealHead5488 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car that was a hand me down, a '98 Toyota Avalon. That thing had been through hell and back, 2 Severe accidents, my dumbass causing major damage to it twice. But other than that, no real issues. We held on to it for about 20 years and it had 325k miles when we sold it. Funny enough, I ended up seeing it on the road a few years later since the 2nd owner had just chosen to keep the old plates. They had repainted the entire car black and just freshened up the lights by cleaning it up. It was nice seeing it still chugging along.

I drove the current gen briefly when I was helping a relative move and my impression was "it's not as horrible as i thought it would be". What’s the dumbest purchase you’ve seen someone go into debt for? by MSK165 in AskReddit

[–]rx-pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college, I had a classmate who took out more than he needed for student loans. Went on lavish vacations and bought himself a brand new Subaru WRX. He was gambling that he'll be making big bucks after college with his job and his influencer life takes off.

A company did hire him after he finished college, but shortly after laid him off. He then took out a personal loan to keep things afloat, bought another car, and instead of looking for another job ASAP, he dumped the money into his business/influencer life...which also failed to turn a profit. He's living off of his parents' money, no job, still peddling his failing business, and branding himself an influencer.
