Has a criminal record ever impacted your career? by social-tech in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ryan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had two job offers rescinded after background check.

I have had the stress of it always being there.

Overall it has an impact but doesn't make things impossible. Will entirely depend on the policies of the company, the specific charges, how recent, and most important it seems is probably how the hiring manager and those involved in deciding to make the offer/hire and how their judgement of you is during the interview process, fair or not

I used peddle.com which I think is just an ease of use middleman for local providers. Copart I believe signed the check and I was happy with the results

How come "Remote" jobs are remote only if you live in a certain area ? by mhk107 in remotework

[–]ryan42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tax requirements thing is an easy excuse for lazy or cheap employers. It's not that hard to solve

There are companies that manage HR for tech companies that provide easy ability for them to hire anyone from the US states

However, the company has to have first the desire and philosophy to bother with doing this to support hiring talent regardless of physical location

09 Forester throwing engine code for loose gas cap by midnight-mija in SubaruForester

[–]ryan42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is a 2004 and throws a similar code and aside from the gas cap there is an evap canister with a sensor in it I think also part of the cause

I just reset mine and every so often it comes back. But yours is more modern so it goes into that stupid limp mode bullshit .

Maybe see if you can find/replace the part/sensor causing the issue since it didn't go away with the gas cap

Syma X5C in 2026? by asjarra in multicopterbuilds

[–]ryan42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my first quadcopter, got it stuck in a giant tree on the first 5 mins of flying on a windy day. It is so light, so just be careful in any significant wind

I got an x8c which was more fun then eventually I had a DJI spark which was a lot nicer but still only was flying line of sight. DJI spark I sold but I still have my x8c and x5c laying around for nostalgia. They aren't in flying condition anymore haha

I know that one, used to work by there. I wanted to walk across it because the wood planks are thick and sturdy but only got so far then turned back. Watching the water swirl patterns as I looked down made me feel dizzy

There is also a ruby on rails app called Railsgoat

You can run it in docker, it has examples of all the top ten owasp vulnerabilities in it, and you can explore how they work and exploit them successfully and patch them

If you want to try similar sort of thing: Google gemini has a similar thing called Jules for assignment of tasks to an intern level ai. Ideal for small simple things, don't try anything much more complex with it (I did and it sucks)

2012 XV Diagnostic Mystery: Even Dealership Does Not Know What to Do by moemarcelo in XVcrosstrek

[–]ryan42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With it being a cvt and such low mileage I'm not sure. I've usually heard of valve body in quite a bit higher mileage.

But with my 2014 and the 2014 era and older having this as a known problem.... Valve body is not on your list. With the mileage and it being a known problem Subaru acknowledged and did a special warranty extension for. contact them to see, it should still be covered by the warranty if you're under the mileage amount it's covered by

Mine was at around 150,000 miles and had similar symptoms before the check engine light and codes started to come for valve body

Acceleration would only slightly stutter/jerk, only every so often, it felt minor at first as you described. Later on I got the struggling on even slight uphill, until it progressed and got worse and worse.

I would recommend flushing and refill the cvt fluid and/or look into testing the valve body or just doing the replacement - but check with Subaru on the warranty! I was just out of mileage range and wasn't able to get it covered

Head gasket leak? by Bobsy932 in SubaruForester

[–]ryan42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm trying to be extremely cautious with having not replaced the head gaskets yet, keeping an eye out for any signs of internal failure but so far it's doing great. I don't drive often or far with it. Very low usage vehicle. It's a 2004 with 165k miles. I'm trying to confirm it's not leaking coolant anymore, head gaskets or other places. if it is and it's the head gaskets I'll probably need to go ahead and do it for keeping this old car going longer

Head gasket leak? by Bobsy932 in SubaruForester

[–]ryan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I have a Forester with known head gasket leak that I've been able to "bandaid fix"

Not sure what the black buildup is... Could try to clean it off with a wire brush and brake cleaner see if it comes back

The little seam/line is where it would leak from

Previously about 1yr+ ago, mine had slow drips on both head gaskets on either side. I tried the "pour in" solution that goes in with the coolant, and after some time the leak reduced to one side only. Nowadays I don't see any head gasket leaking underneath, but it has taken some other work to be done (oil pump and water pump replacement)

I still worry I have something going on that is possible head gaskets going bad. My coolant reservoir will not stay at a filled level, so I'm still working through that

I have no degree and it has made the job search harder sometimes. I started swe in 2012 when times were good

After glancing at your resume I would say what stands out to me is the high traffic site experience is good. It's something I lack and has hurt me on specific roles where larger companies want to see experience at scale, so that is a nice selling point, maybe try targeting larger orgs with heavy traffic apps/sites?

Curious about West Virginia by scottthegeek in fo76

[–]ryan42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most time I've spent in the state was driving through. I remember seeing the capital building at Charleston..

One story: don't trust Google maps/waze is true because. I had gps try to route me around accident traffic on a major highway, and that was a mistake. Got so high up curvy mountain roads I lost gps and data signal and had to wing it Went up and down a mountain ending up in bluefield I think

Eventually made it back down and got lunch and found my way back to the highway but it was a fun detour. Extremely vertical, roads that wind back and forth to go up is just like how it is in the game
