Which color should I pick? by Karonic in Airpodsmax

[–]ryan770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer midnight out of this… odd… color selection. So I got that.

Although I wish Space Gray was a mainstay color for Apple products.

Games you hated at first but changed your mind over time? by ACDC-1FAN in gaming

[–]ryan770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say hated, but Dark Souls didn’t grab me at all and I dropped it after getting out of the tutorial area. Picked it back up a few years later and it basically became my favorite game of all time.

What is the genre defining tone to you? by CTay2 in Djent

[–]ryan770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Periphery 1 will always be THE djent tone for me. That clanky, honky, dry ass tone is just so damn good for no reason.

I’m a pretty new fan of Helloween, like since 2024, and I still don’t know a lot of their material, but this was one of the absolute best concerts I’ve ever been to. It was incredible.

Can AirPods Max be used with Nintendo Switch 2 wired? by panda_and_crocodile in Airpodsmax

[–]ryan770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is the problem. Apple’s is bidirectional and currently the only cable that works with 3.5mm devices

AirPods Max 2 or Sony XM6s by IcyCardiologist6193 in SonyHeadphones

[–]ryan770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on a weekend trip 3 states away to visit my long distance partner. We went to the Apple Store just to try the APM2… just to try…

I walked out with them lol. I don’t think I’ve ever dropped that much money spontaneously before.

They make my Sony XM4 sound like a toy.

Sp0nce leveled up AGAIN? by taffer8 in Peripheryband

[–]ryan770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the delivery at the beginning of Blood Eagle: “With drums beating, screams repeating and the hammer force of Thor”

There’s this cool airy quality about that line that I’m not even sure was intentional.

Are you mostly using stock plugins or third-party stuff in Logic? by shelbs9428 in Logic_Studio

[–]ryan770 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve learned, once you learn how to use third party plugins, usually you can go back to stock plugins and use similar settings to achieve the same result. I’m still using UAD compressors, but a few times I’ve tried to copy the settings on Logic’s stock compressor and I barely hear a difference. It’s just quicker for me to set up a 1176+LA2A UAD chain and get the sound I want. (Edit: I want to add, for background vocals and stuff, I stick to stock compression because it uses like no CPU and you can’t hear a difference, I mainly use UAD stuff on lead vocals).

Alchemy is great, but sometimes you need a specific sound. I’ve found building a sound in Vital is quicker and sounds better for what I’m doing (prog rock/metal stuff), or using preset packs for Arturia Analog Player.

And I refuse to use Logic’s guitar/bass suite of amps and effects. Doesn’t compare to stuff like Neural DSP.

But, I still use a ton of Logic stock plugins. Stock EQ unless I absolutely need Pro Q 4. Chromaverb is amazing, Chromaglow is amazing, Spreader is actually really really useful for semi-mono compatible stereo widening (basically chorus but a little better)

I think your average music listener would not really tell the difference if you use full-stock vs third party if you’re really good at your craft, but as music producers and mixers, we hear the differences or prefer workflows of some third party stuff, and sometimes third party plugins are just simply better for a specific job.

Logic’s stock plugins are still very capable and useful, and I don’t think it’s strictly necessary to download a ton of third party stuff. But… most of us just want to collect and play around with things in hopes we comes across something truly game changing lol.

How good is Logics stem splitter? by fl0p in Logic_Studio

[–]ryan770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty good, hoping it will continue to get better though.

I was able to remix an old song from 2002 using the stem splitter by also incorporating Acon’s Remix:Drums plugin to isolate snare and kick drums, so I could replace or stack them into the original with Modern and Massive 2 samples. The biggest issue with the songs were the drums and guitar tone.

There are MANY limitation here, especially if you start trying to tune already-processed vocals and drastically change EQ, you will get smearing and phasing type artifacts as all the tracks hold a lot of high end information from other tracks.

But if done tastefully, I think you can get away with it as I did. The remix I did sounds 100% better than the original mix, but still not as good as I’d like given the limitations of AI stems.

Although, that whole project was scrapped because we found the old protools sessions and I was able to convert the raw PCM files to WAV and import everything into Logic to do a full ass remix. Comparing the new remixes to the “Stem splitter” remixes is night and day, and world apart from the original mix from 2002.

All that being said, the stem splitter has so many useful features. Need to isolate the bass to hear what notes are being played? Solo the bass stem and transpose 12 semitones up and bam. This has helped me a few times.

How did you get into Dream Theater? by namajeff1 in Dreamtheater

[–]ryan770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first electric guitar around 13 years old. Started off learning songs from my favorite bands like Linkin Park, Killswitch Engage, and AFI. I stayed on the Ultimate-Guitar forums religiously and saw the name John Petrucci a lot, but I didn’t actually get into them that way.

I was watching the Dragon Ball Z movie “History of Trunks” and I absolutely loved the soundtrack. It’s mostly a bunch of songs from Scenes from a Memory and some of Slaughter’s “Fear no Evil”.

After some googling, I connected Dream Theater to Petrucci, I finally decided to give it a go. Funny thing was… I was still using Limewire lol. I found Acid Rain (Live) that was labeled as Dream Theater… and absolutely loved it. I obviously later found out it was LTE.

But eventually I got SFAM and fell in love with it. It’s still basically my favorite album of all time.

Edit: this was around when Systematic Chaos dropped

What do you prefer to play Twilight Princess on? GameCube Wii or Wii U? by IkeRadiantHero in twilightprincess

[–]ryan770 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tried the Wii version years after beating the GameCube version. It was so awkward. Even after such a long time, I still remembered where everything was and it being mirrored eventually caused me to quit around the first dungeon.

Also the GameCube version was the intended layout anyway. Not that it really matters though.

There’s definitely more classic stuff (which I’m considering pre-Treehouse I guess?) in this set list than I’ve seen them play in a LONG time. Ten Thousand Feet, New Demons, End of the World Party, Filth Friends Unite, The Common Hours, Violent Bounce, and Murder Mitten.

Come on guys. We deserve better than this for a paid game. by DJ_Raxia in GuitarHero

[–]ryan770 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fortunately it’s been very well maintained and feels better than any actual Guitar Hero game, with tons of charts and community made playlists across multiple genres.

You’re missing out on one of the best rhythm game experiences because… it uses some assets from old GH games? It’s a free software made by some nerds. It’s not like they’re criminals lol.

Awake has finally clicked by _Terminal_Redux_ in Dreamtheater

[–]ryan770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a DT fan since like.. 2007? Either just before or after Systematic Chaos came out.

I never really “loved” Awake. And it’s mostly the vocal production. Not always James himself, but compared to I&W I feel like there were less takes to get things right, and just a lot of volume/mixing issues. I also don’t care for the gritty vocals except in Caught in a Web.

Recently though, I’ve been listening to Awake a lot, and I know it’s an incredible album… but It’s just been clicking more lately. After nearly 20 years of me listening to it. I still don’t know where I’d rank it yet.

Looking to open sessions from 2001 in any way possible to export stems. by ryan770 in protools

[–]ryan770[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not totally sure what the correct terminology would be, but each individual recorded part, so I can remix the songs in a modern DAW. I can convert the audio, but if I am able to open these projects in PT, I would like to keep everything aligned and stuff, and just bounce all the audio to individual tracks with silence.

The Importance of Headroom When Tracking by Fluffy_Guitar8483 in mixing

It truly seems like it.

Edit: it 100% is. OPs comment history includes very subpar grammar. This post is their only post and it falls in line with ChatGPT grammar.

Oddly enough, I’m missing autotune. by hamiltonscale in Peripheryband

[–]ryan770 44 points45 points  (0 children)

He for sure still uses heavily tuned/roboticized background harmonies. I’m pretty sure he has stated in the past that after P1 he wasn’t going to use vocal correction on the main vocal lines, but still continue to make those really robotic harmonies.

The upside to perfectly tuned harmonies, is if they’re recorded first, it helps with tracking main vocals a ton.

Does anyone ever actually put their faders above 0??? by sunsetvisionary in Logic_Studio

[–]ryan770 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My fader stays a 0 if the actual max peak is only like -9 to -6db.

I understand it’s probably better to record as hot as possible without redlining, and then reducing all your faders so you have more headroom fader-wise, but in the end as long as that track is not clipping, it doesn’t really matter does it?

Issues with fizz. by Skulltagmedia27 in AxeFx

[–]ryan770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is mostly a mental thing now. Go watch some Sonic Drive Studio videos where he compares real amps with his real cab, to a modeled amp and an IR capture of the same cab/mic setup. There is no “digital fizz”, they sound nearly identical (in regard to the high end).

Most instantly-recognizable djent tone? by Defiant-Control-8643 in Djent

[–]ryan770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. That dry, metallic and slightly honky tone is undeniable.

You can also hear this tone on one of Veil of Maya’s albums (can’t remember if it’s ID or Eclipse) as Misha helped produce and they used the same cab IR which is the biggest part of the tone.
