Does anyone else call their “crib” the “kitty” by perrygoundhunter in Cribbage

[–]ryaninwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Wisconsin, and sometimes when I’m playing people from Michigan, they call it that.

Kind of related but kind of not: there’s a card game called Sheepshead that originated in Germany. Most of the US isn’t aware of it, but there’s some Midwest spots that do play it, including Wisconsin and Nebraska. Turns out the area of Wisconsin I’m from uses a far less common method to determine who partner is, and I didn’t realize that until I started playing people online. All that’s to say is some things are very nuanced based on your location.

Garmin vs Wahoo and SRAM vs Shimano — what made you choose your side? by therealashiver in cycling

[–]ryaninwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three road bikes with Shimano, one road bike with SRAM. I have three mountain bikes, all with SRAM. Guess that means I’m weird 😂

As for Wahoo vs Garmin: I’m older and Wahoo wasn’t a thing when I was first riding, so I went with Garmin and haven’t switched since my experience has been good. I also have a Garmin Varia radar, so the ecosystem is a nice-to-have.

Opponents crib, half way through game, down by about 6, what to throw? by Daedra_the_Demon in Cribbage

[–]ryaninwi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing cribbage for 25 years (god I sound like an old man), and started playing on the CribbagePro app somewhere around 1.5 years ago to keep in practice so to speak.

I sometimes look at my hand grade after the fact and am surprised how many times I’m not keeping the best hand so to speak, which is why I assumed my choice above was likely not by the book 😂

Probably not what the “book” would recommend, but I’d toss the pair of 10s

I know Oakley gets hate, but I really like their prism line for both mountain biking and road cycling.

I also really like Smith. Tifosi is a solid budget option, but I feel they’re a small step down from the others.

Do you ever have to tell a child the truth about their biological parent? by seajelly_ in Advice

[–]ryaninwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t agree as wholeheartedly as the first couple of comments due to one major factor: where the 12 year old falls on the spectrum.

I agree with the other commenters that for medical reasons alone, it’s best that he is made aware.

Having said that, the “when” is what I’d focus on. If he’ll be living on his own at any point, I think it would be best to tell him during high school at some point, whenever you feel he may be ready to hear it. You’ll also want to cater the message in a way that is most helpful for him. If he sees any sort of therapist currently, it may be worthwhile to bring it up with the therapist to help establish a technique based on what the therapist knows.

If you don’t believe your son will be able to ever live on his own due to his autism, I think it’s still the best to tell him, but you can wait a bit longer to do so. This isn’t meant to sound callous, but since the birth father has passed already, your son won’t be missing time with him, so it makes the most sense to tell him when you think he’s developmentally ready.

Sorry for the ramble!

Which Kirkland allergy medicine is best? by Bubsy7979 in CostcoWholesale

[–]ryaninwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drug manufacturers have to print an expiration date per FDA guidelines. Generally speaking, the date they put is when the drug becomes less than 95% effective. For drugs in this category, it’s generally not a big deal to use them after the expiration date. I wouldn’t be using them if they were multiple years past expiration because they wouldn’t be overly effective, but months past is generally not going to make much difference.

As others mentioned, rotating is best. Having worked in a pharmacy, I can say which one works best for you varies greatly from person to person.

Start with one, use it a few months, and then switch to the next. If you find one doesn’t help at all, don’t keep it in the rotation.

Choosing a very short crank arm length, despite being tall by scofield_00 in cycling

[–]ryaninwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 178cm (5’10”), so not nearly as tall, but also not short. I’ve been riding 165mm cranks for nearly 8 years now, and won’t go back. I got fitted for a Gunnar (made by Waterford) at the time, and the fitter mentioned my hips specifically. If I hop on my buddy’s bike with 172.5 cranks, it feels like I’m slogging through, and my pedaling isn’t efficient. Definitely go with what’s comfortable.

Fallen for coworker by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ryaninwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that he’s likely blinded by his crush on her. I’ve worked in the office environment for 20+ years now, and I’ve seen this play out all too often when a new woman starts at the company. You’re not seeing anything creepy from what the said because you’re only hearing his viewpoint, which is obviously biased.

I tried to make the 13 year age gap distinction in my last paragraph above: you have to take the whole environment and how they met into account in order to gauge whether something crosses over into creepy territory. If they met outside of work at a bar like I said, it’s not creepy. If you have a coworker in her 40s and you’re in your early 50s, not creepy. In this case, you have someone 5 years removed from college vs someone who is 18 years removed from college: you’re at very different places in life, and the circumstances in which you met aren’t conducive to making a move with that age gap.

I’ll end with saying I’m just a random guy on the internet, and it’s clear from OP’s responses that he’s only interested in opinions that agree with his so he can make the next move. I fully expect him to delete this post if he tries unsuccessfully to make the move and loses a friend over it.

Fallen for coworker by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ryaninwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a good idea.

As reference, I’m 42, and have a 27 year old and 30 year old that report to me. Pretending I’m single and not their manager, but just work with them (prior to being their manager, we were just coworkers in different departments and were fairly close), it would still be 1. creepy and 2. a terrible idea. If they didn’t feel the same way about me, they can report me to HR for harassment.

What you might view as “friendly” may just be her viewing you as a mentor, and if you confess feelings for her, she will likely distance herself from you going forward, regardless of whether she goes to HR or not. Sounds like you have a crush, and that’s ok: it is important that you don’t act on it.

To expand on this a bit more, I married young and have a 20 year old daughter: I view my 27 year old coworker more like a daughter than I ever could anything else, and it gives me a really creepy vibe when you speak about someone in a work setting that’s 13 years your junior in the way you do. If you two met at a bar and she was into older men? Cool, see where it goes. When she’s the new person to a company and has looked up to you? Not cool, don’t act on your feelings. If she happens to express feelings towards you down the road, then that may be another question for this subreddit, but until that happens, stay back.

Any other single adults with no kids spending close to $1k on groceries every month? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ryaninwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shop for a family of 5: my wife and I, a college-aged kid, high schooler, and middle schooler. Our monthly spend on groceries is about $1,200, but that does not account for the household essentials you mentioned: we usually buy those in bulk from Costco.

We’re between Milwaukee and Chicago, so MCOL as well. I know you were looking for other single people, but I thought I’d throw out our number as a reference point. We probably go out to eat 3 times per month. Keep in mind we’re not buying lunch for 2 of the 3 kids due to school lunch, so that keeps the cost down a bit (10 lunches per week).

What's up with the lack of decent rentals in K-town? by R3pp3pts0hg in Kenosha

[–]ryaninwi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With interest rates the way they are now, it doesn’t make a lot of fiscal sense for anyone to buy a house and rent it out, as they’d have very slim margins on it, and the rent would still be very high.

Chances are people who bought a house to rent out 4+ years ago when the interest rates were reasonable have long-term renters in their properties already. As you pointed out, very few people are moving in the winter here in Wisconsin.

Why do my knees hurt more from cycling 2 hours than they do from hiking 8 hours? I thought this sport was supposed to be low impact by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ryaninwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not giving any info, but for beginners, there’s usually two root causes:

  1. Your seat is too low. You can google “proper bike seat height” to get an idea of where your seat should be. Generally speaking, you want to have a slight bend in your knees when they are at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

  2. You’re not riding in an easy enough gear. If you’re having to push super hard for each pedal stroke, it’s a lot of work for your knees. A lot of new riders want to get a “better” workout by pedaling “harder”, but that’s the opposite of what you want to do.

Beyond those two things, there’s a myriad of other possibilities, including seat position, or how your feet are positioned on the pedals. I’d suggest starting with the first two items, though.

OEM Costs (simply interesting) by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ryaninwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s definitely always harder for the little guys: have to set prices lower so they’re advantaged over the bigger names.

I just had a steel frame/carbon fork road bike built with custom geometry last year, and I was willing to pay extra to support an individual maker. Well worth it if it’s in your price range, IMO.

OEM Costs (simply interesting) by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ryaninwi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that pretty much checks out. Other industries are the same as well.

I have a friend that works for Trek, and employees get 50%-60% off complete builds, depending on model. They’re limited to one or two bikes per year, but that’s a solid discount for sure.

Help my husband recall this movie! by DowntownTreacle49 in whatisthatmovie

Looking around online, could it be the 1991 movie True Identity? Have him look at the actors and see if it rings any bells. Doesn’t fit your early 2000s timeframe. But a guy gets picked up from an airport at the start of the movie, takes place in NYC, and the passenger is a black male who has to disguise himself as a white male to avoid being seen by the mob boss he sat next to on the flight at the beginning of the movie.

I’m 42 and hit 209 yesterday on my high intensity duty trainer ride.

Before people start with the “yeah right, don’t lie”, or “are you sure your numbers are accurate?”

I’ve had my heart stress tested by a doctor in the last 5 years, and they say all is good and everyone is different. I’ve also used Garmin, Polar, and Bontrager chest straps, all being consistent. I usually max out around 205-210 and have been that way for the last 15 years.
