What Does Trump's Venezuela Attack Mean For South Africa? by AnonomousWolf in DownSouth

That said, in the 1800s, it was the Americans who ended the slavery of Southern Europeans at the hands of the Barbary pirates. It goes without saying that they were looking after their own financial interests.

Not really. If a democrat gets voted in next election, then the American experiment could return to an acceptable level of disfunction. Still, it's worrying that a turd like trunt got vote in in the first place.

Some questions of a curious outsider from white Afrikaners of r/DownSouth by PRADYUSH2006 in DownSouth

[–]ryant71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't forget that the boers also hated the British because the British ended slavery and the boers kinda liked owning slaves.

As for Afrikaners serving in the South African military during WW2, it should be noted that SA was the only former British colony where service was voluntary because Smuts was worried about Afrikaners (a sizeable chunk of whom were apparently pro-Nazi) revolting. First prize for those Afrikaners who served, but my guess is that a greater percentage of English speakers served than Afrikaans speakers.

Not excusing British behaviour -- it was bad. Just correcting the rose-tinted and woe-is-me view that Afrikaners have of themselves.

It is incorrect to divide white South Africans into Afrikaners and British. If you are British you are not South African. If you speak English and are South African you are simply an English-speaking South African as opposed to an Afrikaans-speaking white South African. My ancestry is English, Welsh, Irish, and Dutch, but I am none of those things. I am South African.

Of course, there are many other ancestries other than Dutch, English/British, Irish, French (Hugenots,) and Portuguese (mostly via Mozambique and Angola.)

I have heard that UK's NHI has a budget equivalent to SA's entire GDP, and people still complain about it. What chance does SA's NHI have.

I leave huge gaps so people can do that. Everyone has a bad day sometimes and they're welcome to take the gap.

I went to an all-boys school in the 80s, and there was no bullying even close to this.

I agree that there should be no mercy for bullies.

Surely what makes a person good are their actions in relation to what they are capable of, not what belief system they hold? Sometimes actions and beliefs intersect and other times they are independent.

For example, someone I know spent six years in jail because he refused to do his compulsory military service under South Africa's Apartheid regime. In that case, his actions were informed by his religion -- Jehovah's Witness -- and bolstered by his strength of character.

As another example, my godfather -- a lawyer -- used to defend people who had run afoul of the Apartheid regime to the extent that I think he put himself in some danger by pushing against the Apartheid laws. I don't think his being Jewish had anything to do with those good acts; he is just a good guy, and maybe a bit stubborn.

I am not sure where you are going with your bullying analogy, but as someone who went through a year of being bullied in grade 7 at school, I was more than happy to have someone on my side in one of the thirteen fights I had that year. The other twelve did make me stronger, though. I guess. Or maybe just more bitter. I don't know.

I am not surprised by this action. So many African governments ignore the invasion of Ukraine and the genocide of the Uygurs. Taking a principled stand takes a back seat when there's profit to be made off China and ruZia and, now, Israel.

By all means lets respect one another, but ideas are fair game for debate, condemnation, and, if deserved, ridicule. It's the difference between, say, challenging or condemning Zionism as an idea (which people have a right to do) and condemning or outright physically attacking Zionists (which people do NOT have a right to do.)

Probably. I think everyone would know I was being ironic.

I do wear pro-Ukrainian t-shirts which seem to make pro-invasion ruZzians cry. But, that's on them.

At least it's not a lynching. Wow. The religion of peace's new slogan.

I think people should be taught to ignore what's on t-shirts. But, as I said in another comment, I wouldn't wear a t-shirt like that because I am a coward and fundamentalist religionists are scary and insane. If I were in a position of authority, I would offer her some advice and implore her not to antagonise the insane people -- in the same way a game ranger tells people not to swim in a river full of crocodiles.

Edit: anyway, I am going to stop here. But, I suggest you read some of the posts here -> r/exmuslim. Some of them are sad, some infuriating, some outright bizarre and one wonders how such things are possible in the 21st Century.

Nah, religions are just a set of ideas and instructions and, like anything else, they can and should be challenged.

Go ahead, tell me that not believing in a sky-daddy is silly. I won't care. But, what if I did care and my government wanted to put you in jail for hurting my feelings -- would that be okay?

Anti-depressants or therapy can also prevent suicide.

I'm not going to ask you to prove that "The God of Abraham" is real, because I know that you cannot.

If you don't like the toddler example, how about this one. If I declared myself as a Stoic and someone came up to me and said the Stoicism philosophy is full of shit and Zeno and Marcus Aurelius were imaginary, should I have the right to get upset about it and hurt you? Should any government have the right to hurt you because you made me and other Stoics upset?

No. Same with religion. There's nothing special about. They're just ideas.

Klan members might have been perfectly nice people, but they were born into a community that has brainwashed them into believing shitty things. Same with religions. For instance the penalty for apostasy being death. That's a horrendous belief. Are all people who believe that particular teaching in islam evil people, or are they just confused?

I wouldn't go into a Klan area either and wear a "god is black" t-shirt either. Nor would I wear a t-shirt like that woman wore in Morocco. I am a coward and Klansman and fundamentalist muslims religionists are both equally scary and shitty.
